Strange dates[edit]

The dates in the article look very strange to me, but I cribbed them verbatim from the reference I cited. Anyone who knows what's potting is welcome to give some context. --Slashme 11:38, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is what Brethren Encyclopedia has to say on page 599:

"HERSHEY, JOHN WILLARD (CB), b 1876, scientist, educator. The son of Abraham and Hosie Eyster Hershey, J. Willard Hershey was born near Gettysburg, PA. He joined the Marsh Creek congregation in 1902 or 1903. He taught school while studying at the Millersville, PA, state Normal school, from which he graduated in 1901. He also studied at Pennsylvania (Gettysburg) College (BS 1907; hon. MS 1910), Harvard U., Johns Hopkins U, and the U of Chicago (PhD, 1924). Hershey taught at Bridgewater College [a Church of the Brethren college] (1909-11), Defiance College (1912-15, 1916-18), and McPherson College [another Church of the Brethren college] (1918-ff.). He married Effie Bowman in 1916. Known as an excellent professor at McPherson College, he published several textbooks and pursued research with students. After seven years of experiments, he won acclaim in 1929 as the first American to produce synthetic diamonds. DFD"
