Name

The page shows his name as Jack Joseph Nicholson but the info box has it as Jack Robert Nicholson. Anyone know which is the right one?Luciferian56 20:29, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Spelling

Would someone please correct the bloody awful spelling in this article.

I would, but while I'm pedantic enough to demand it, I can't be arsed.--TresRoque 00:38, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Religious affiliation

It's probably inappropriate to list him in the "Atheists" category. According to the adherents.com article included in the footnotes, he does not consider himself an atheist, even as he does not believe in God. While I understand that such a statement is cryptic, it disqualifies him as an atheist. Treybien 17:54 29 October 2006 (UTC)

I agree, I found it a bit odd as well. IronCrow 03:39, 31 January 2007 (UTC)

IMDB clearly states he was born in Neptune, New Jersey

Unless you can provide a link that proves otherwise, DO NOT edit place of birth.

imdb is WRONG, as they often are. Like this site it can be edited be anybody. MrBlondNYC 00:42, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
The biography from the site jacknicholson.org states that he's born in Manhattan, New York, and raised in Neptune, New Jersey.Raymond Luxury Yacht 11:49, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

I don't know if this is considered "proof", but this book about Nicholson (probably more reliable than most websites) says he was born in Neptune.

Filmography

The Filmography section was removed on 22:05, 31 May 2005 by 65.164.22.195; should it be restored? --Alan Au 05:02, 18 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • I restored the filmography, as other actor pages seem to include it. In addition, 65.164.22.195 appears to be a new editor and gave no reason for the deletion. If future editors wish to remove it, an explanation would be appreciated. --Alan Au 17:55, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)
    • Most definitely it should be restored. :) Cburnett 06:16, Jun 21, 2005 (UTC)

Abortion

I changed the article to include his more ambivalent (for lack of a better word) views on abortion. The article had said that he was pro-life, and followed it with the quote about being grateful for being alive. However, while he is anti-abortion personally, in an interview in Cigar Afficionado he claims to be pro-choice: "I think it would be comically incorrect for someone in my position to be for abortion. But I am pro-choice. People always say, 'How can you be pro-choice and against abortion?' Well, I tell them, this is one of the ways." The link to the interview online is: http://www.cigaraficionado.com/Cigar/CA_Profiles/People_Profile/0,2540,21,00.html This article is a few years old... so the possibility exists that he has since changed his mind and become entirely pro-life. If so, by all means change it back (but provide evidence).

Well, Rush Limbaugh is also pro-choice and says he chooses life! Sounds like the same thing Jack is saying. It sounds like he can be described as anti-abortion though.Dwain 17:39, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

I don't think it's possible to be pro-life or anti-abortion AND pro-choice. Obviously few people would describe their position as "pro-abortion", but it makes more sense just to describe Nicholson as pro-choice.

--He's only saying that while he respects a woman's right to choose for herself, that's not a decision that he personally condones. 75.2.244.129 17:13, 29 September 2006 (UTC)angie

Changes to Personal information

There were a lot of factual errors in the personal information section and I just wanted to clear them up. Jack's father might be Don Furcillo Rose, but it has never been confirmed. Jack's aunt, who he still thinks of as a sister, Lorraine believes Eddie King might be the father, without a DNA test and with Jack not sure himself, I don't think it can be stated as if it is a fact. Sources, Jack's Life a biography by Patrick Gilligan, The Jokers Wild a biography by John Parker and countless other interviews.

Jack Nicholson has four "known" children. He may have more for all any of us knows, but there are only four children that have been publicly acknowledged. Jennifer, Caleb, Lorraine and Raymond. Jack did not publicly acknowledge Caleb as his son until a 1998 Rolling Stone interview the other children are detailed in every article and interview on Jack since thir respective births.

Jack and Angelica broke up before the birth of Lorraine Nicholson - the first of the two children he had with Rebecca Broussard. He did not have two children to other women during their relationship or at least this info is certainly not public domain and certainly has not even been speculated upon to my knowledge (although some tabloid somewhere may have printed some such thing) and Angelica did not leave during the second pregnancy she left at the first news of the first. Sources, Life Magazine January 1990, GQ August 1996 and Rolling Stone Magazine. You can view all my sources at http://www.jacknicholson.org/jnextras.html. I am one of the webmasters of a Jack Nicholson fansite/archive and I have read all the articles and interviews posted on our site.

The April 1994 Vanity Fair article also confirms what I have written but is not on our site, sorry.

I deleted the comments about the "love triangle" etc because this was gossip at the time and was certainly never confirmed. I don't think that quality of journalism belongs on the site? I'm new so I might be wrong about that, it's just a lot of people will assume info on a site they may think of as "encyclopaedic" in nature, will be gospel and gossip is not gospel.

Reversion

I liked the rewrite of this page to be more factual - someone then made changes but included no explanation and no sources and when I changed it back - they call it vandalism. I think what you did was vandalism - so I think you should get a neutral party to look at this or you need to prove the changes you make and quote sources. The person who wrote the last thing quoted sources and ya know I checked em and the biography Jack's Life says it's June's sister who questions who the father is, so how is it vandalism not to agree and also I am writing something in here about why I make changes and ArnieP doesn't, you know I bet the people who run the Jack Nicholson website have read far more on Jack than you have and if you think you have better and more source then front up with them. You say the stuff about King is gossip ok where did you get that from back it up and you say that Jack's Mom pretended to be his sister cos Fursillo was a bigamist how do you know that is why Jack's Mom did that? You say you want people to be able to understand wikipedia but you have made the writing worse, it's not much better than how I write now and it seems to me you just want to state your opinion and not have to back it up. So tell me ArnieP how and where can I complain to higher up people in Wikipedia about you?

I haven't seen any information that supports the idea that King was the father other than people gossiping that Jack looked a bit like him possibly. Nicholson's aunt Lorraine fell out with Furcillo's brother Victor so it is understandable she may harbour some bitterness towards the Furcillo family and not want to agree that Don Furcillo is the father. I have included her name in the article. Arniep 10:44, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

Sources:

Thank you to the person above who pointed out that ArnieP has as yet to provide a single source in support of his/her changes. Here are some sources for the changes and corrections I have made - I linked to the site containing the material below but it seems too hard for some people to read them. Also, if you would like to know about the assertion that Eddie King could be Jack's father then please read Jack's Life, the biography. I stipulated the first time I made a change, that this was my main source.

Excerpt from an Authorised Interview with Jack Nicholson published in Cigar Aficionado 1995

Nicholson was born not far from 55th and Fifth, at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, on April 22, 1937. Although Nicholson's family lived at the Jersey shore, 50 miles to the south, they chose Bellevue due to circumstances that are somewhat confusing.

The people he believed to be his parents, John and Ethel May Nicholson, were actually his grandparents. John dressed department store windows in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and Ethel May, a hairdresser, was also an artist of considerable talent from whom, Nicholson explains, he acquired his appreciation of art. (In fact, today he has several of Ethel May's oil paintings hanging in the upstairs hallway.)

Nicholson's real mother, whom he believed to be his sister June, was John and Ethel May's eldest daughter. Jack didn't find out the truth about his parents until 10 years after his real mother died of cancer in 1963.

June was somewhat independent-minded for 1935. At 16, she flew the coop for the Big Apple in pursuit of a theatrical career. She landed a job as an Earl Carroll dancer, but her career was cut short when she became pregnant. Forced to return home, June not only had to make the shameful admission that she was pregnant, but that she didn't know for sure who the father was (though Don Furcillo-Rose, an ex-boyfriend of June's during the mid-1930s and later a New Jersey businessman, claimed in the 1970s that he was the father).

June gave birth to Nicholson in New York City because her family evidently felt it was far enough away from friends and neighbors in Neptune, New Jersey, for them to be able to keep the whole episode a dark secret.

In 1937, it was tantamount to having leprosy for an unwed girl to give birth. As a result, Ethel May took over the raising of her grandson, passing him off as her own for the rest of her life, and swearing the others in the family to secrecy. Thus, June slipped quietly into the role of being Nicholson's older "sister."

Since June died before Nicholson ever learned the family secret, he was never able to have a mother/son relationship with her or to even talk to her about it.

Nicholson first learned of the cover-up in 1974, when a Time magazine reporter, who was doing a cover story about him, confronted him with the facts. At Nicholson's request, the reporter promised not to divulge the truth to his readers. But columnist Walter Scott revealed it in Parade magazine in 1977.

"Such is the price of fame," says Nicholson with a sigh. "People start poking around in your private life, and the next thing you know your sister is actually your mother."

That a perceptive and highly sensitive man such as Nicholson could be kept in the dark all those years about his mother's true identity seems like something out of Oliver Twist. How could such a thing happen in the twentieth century? But Nicholson insists that 1974 was actually the first time he ever learned of it.

Nicholson's low-key reaction to the so-called scandal is typical of him. "I'd say it was a pretty dramatic event, but it wasn't what I'd call traumatizing. After all, by the time I found out who my mother was I was pretty well psychologically formed. As a matter of fact, it made quite a few things clearer to me. If anything, I felt grateful. About the only lasting effect it had on me [was that] it sort of polarized my feelings about abortion. I think it would be comically incorrect for someone in my position to be for abortion. But I am pro-choice. People always say, 'How can you be pro-choice and against abortion?' Well, I tell them, this is one of the ways."

Excerpt from Authorised Interview with Jack Nicholson published in Entertainment Weekly 1993

It all flows naturally from an improbable background, Fellini crossed with James M. Cain. Born in 1937, Nicholson grew up in a post-Depression Jersey-shore household dominated by a beautician named Ethel May Nicholson, who he thought was his mother, and two much older "sisters," June and Lorraine. Ethel May had an itinerant, alcoholic husband named John Nicholson, whom the young Jack believed to be his father. Not till he was a movie star, just after the release of--eerily enough--Chinatown, did he learn, from a TIME researcher helping to prepare a cover story on him, that Ethel May and John Nicholson were actually his grandmother and grandfather, and June and Lorraine were his mother and aunt. He would never find out the identity of his real father ("an X factor," he says), who impregnated June when she was 16. It is an explosion that still reverberates. To this day he refers to June as "my sister."

From Rolling Stone Magazine Interview with Jack Nicholson in 1984

Rolling Stone Interviewer Nancy Collins: Ethel May was actually your grand mother, posing as your mother and June who you thought was your sister was actually your natural mother. How did you feel about this?

Jack Nicholson: I was making the fortune and someone called me on the telephone – I think it was turned over by the investigative reporting they did for a Time Magazine Cover story they did on me. Ultimately, I got official verification from Lorraine. I was stunned.

Rolling Stone Interviewer Nancy Collins: Do you know who your father was? Jack Nicholson: Only June and Ethel knew and they never told anybody.

From an Authorised Interview with Jack Nicholson published in GQ August 1996

It is well known by now that you were an illegitimate child and the woman you thought was your mother was actually your grandmother, while your “sister” was actually your mother. How do you think your situation might have been different if you had actually known your father?

Jack Nicholson: I have no way of knowing. This is information that came to me as a fully formed successful adult on the cover of Time Magazine. My only reaction is gratitude towards the women. Because I thought what they did was very strong. And I really never have had any curiosity towards whoever he is [my father].

If more changes, other than minor ones, are made to try to further imply that Don Rose Furcillo’s paternity is definite, then I will take this article to mediation. As you really are just pushing a point of view Arnie, and you need to let it go and move on or prove cause and effect and show sources. You can’t make assumjptions, or state the lineage of a person just because you feel it’s right and you won’t accept otherwise. Please, I am sure you mean well in contributing to wikipedia but, Jack Nicholson is a living person. Please show some respect and keep your opinions within the confines of fact. It is ok to say something is possible, if it’s possible, but don’t edit this to imply more than that. Thank you. Jackfan222

Jack's mother and father

E! channel biography states that a man claiming to be Jack's father called him on the phone and said "I'm your father... what, don't believe me? call NJ" and that's how he found out that his sister was actually his mother. I don't know what their source was, but that's the story they tell.

Twenty years ago my grandfather, Verne Henry Malloy, told me that he was Jack Nicholson's father. At that time I had no idea who "Jack" was. He even pulled out photos of himself, June, and Jack on the beach. Whenever my Grandmother would return he would swiftly hide the pictures. He explained how Jack grew up thinking that his Grandmother was his mother and that June (his real mother) was his sister. He brought it up on multiple occasions. The only reason I have ever given this a second thought is that their resemblance is irrefutable. I briefly spoke to Jack about it when I ran into him at River Dance years ago. I have no interest in money or fame. I just want to put out what was said to me in the event that Jack would like to know. I don't see why my grandfather would make up such a weird lie. Oddly enough my mother's maiden name is Mary Nichols AND my aunt married a gentleman named Casey Nicholson.

Quotations regarding Nicholson

Was wondering if either of the following might be included someway or somehow:

"He's into fun and games in bed, all the really horny things I get off on, like spankings, handcuffs, whips and Polaroid pictures... His idea of being sexy is dressing in blue satin boxer shorts and fluorescent orange socks and chasing me around the room with a Ping-Pong paddle." --Girlfriend Karen Mayo-Chandler

"The most highly sexed individual I have ever met." --Kim Basinger

--AWF

Don't bother adding anything like that. It seems like most people are prudes when it comes to this site and do not appreciate their idols having anything unflattering about them even if it would serve a fan to know. I added several things that were immediately deleted and they were all interesting things about Jack. Jack's Wikipedia page is unfortunately one of the worst online Jack Nicholson pages because of this. One doesn't even begin to know how interesting this man is because the interesting things are continuously deleted. Sweet Pinkette 05:45, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Anything without a proper citation will be removed on sight, yes. Try citing your sources and see what happens. CovenantD 06:16, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Even if it does have a proper citation it would more than likely be removed. I have seen some questionable things on other pages that needed citations and were left uncited. And some very interesting things removed that were properly cited. Sweet Pinkette 12:54, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Religion

I don't know if Nicholson is an atheist or not, and there are conflicting views on his religious status (or lack thereof). One trusted religious source, Adherents.com, states Nicholson was baptized and is a Catholic. If no one can produce evidence otherwise, I will remove the "Atheists" category, and that will be all of the matter. Эйрон Кинни (t) 23:31, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Perhaps "Lapsed Catholic" would be a better description.

What's the most recent data on Jack's belief (or lack thereof)? There bio quotes from adherents seem quite dated. Adherents also makes the claim that he's agnostic, referring to the 1992 Vanity Fair interview without providing any quote whatsoever to establish that agnosticism. However in that same interview he said "I don't believe in God now..." Note that this doesn't necessarily mean he's agnostic -- it means he lacks belief in a God. Specifically I'm curious about statements since 1992. --ReedEs 01:25, 6 May 2006 (UTC)
I don't really know. Sadly, an actor's religious life isn't as important as his sex life anymore. Эйрон Кинни (t) 02:13, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Atheism is the state of disbelief or non-belief in the existence of a deity or deities. From the quote in Vanity Fair, it seems he's pretty definitively in the Atheist category. CovenantD 02:03, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Since you guys are going back and forth why doesn't one of you dig the whole article up. I agree the vanity fair article is paraphrased, and both pieces I have seen you could easily take either side, but in its whole unbiased context whatever the answer is would show through. Does anyone have or access to a 1992 Vanity Fair with Jack's interview in it? Till then maybe not list it at all --Xiahou 02:57, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I don't. However, could you please put all responses on my Talk Page? 71.243.175.126 03:04, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Anonymous IP, If you don't have access to the entire interview then what are you basing your edits on? The only quote we have now states unequivocally that he no longer believes in God. I don't know why you can't accept that statement for the classic definition of atheism that it is. CovenantD 05:13, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
CovenantD, I have seen part of the interview through cites on other websites (not only from adherents.com) and I have seen other statements from other sources, some even more recent than the Vanity Fair cite, which I could find for you if you like. I don't see why you think only cites you have are the only ones out there. PLUS he even said himself that he does not consider himself an atheist. I don't see why YOU can't accept that. If you would like to respond, please do it on my talk page. Thanks. 71.243.175.126 15:33, 10 December 2006 (UTC)
Then find a source that reflects that. I am going by the sources provided, not some vague recollection that can't be verified. And I'll direct my comments here, attached to the article in question. CovenantD 17:23, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Jack Nicholson is not an Athiest, nor a total Roman Catholic, he's more of an agnostic. He believes there may be a god, but does not practice a religion of any kind. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Banditemilyx12 (talkcontribs) 01:56, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

There is a good source about his believes, religion and upbringing. http://www.adherents.com/people/pn/Jack_Nicholson.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.151.115.9 (talk) 15:45, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

If we remove the Atheist category (which I think is fair because the lack of a personal declaration) we should also remove the Catholic one (same situation). Catholic can be a thing of the past (old sources) while "I don't believe in God now..." can overwrite that, it's fresher. So, if "I don't believe in God now..." ≠ Atheist, then the absence of "I am a Catholic" ≠ Roman Catholic. adherents.com insists upon his Catholicism by overwhelming us with childhood conditions. Also if you're a devout follower of let's say Gandhi, or a great admirer (me) that doesn't make you a Hindu. If you incorporate some Catholic stuff to your life, that doesn't make you a Catholic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zoomazooma (talkcontribs) 10:28, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Category comments

It seems like Nicholson would fit Category:Adoptees; what do others think? Also, he's currently listed in Category:Italian-Americans... is that just because of Donald Furcillo? Unless he has other Italian ancestry or identifies as Italian-American, I think we should take it out as we don't know for sure who his biological father is. --Allen 00:39, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

He identifies as Irish so he should be categorized as such. MrBlondNYC 09:32, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Whoever keeps deleting the external links, stop it. The links provided are good material in addition to the wikipedia article. Being a fansite is no reason for deletion, other wikipedia articles on celebrities have far more fansites added than this one. If fansites are not allowed then you could as well delete the imdb link since the info on imdb can be changed by visitors (read: fans) too. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.243.74.150 (talkcontribs)

The "fan sites" are not compliant with WP:EL and WP:SPAM. You're hardly making a convincing argument here that they're not spam. --Nlu (talk) 16:41, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
I quote from Wikipedia guidelines (Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not): "On articles about topics with many fansites, including a link to one major fansite is appropriate, marking the link as such". There are 2 fansites wich are worth to mention in this article because they provide decent additional material on the subject. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.243.74.150 (talkcontribs) 18:21, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
WP:EL said that linking such a fan site may be appropriate, not that it always is. Further, even if it is, neither WP:NOT nor WP:EL calls for the inclusion of two fan sites. --Nlu (talk) 07:11, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

Hi, sorry I didn't see this conversation. I am one of the webmasters for Jacknicholson.org one of the fansites that was listed on this entry. Anyway I would like to be included on the following basis and I quote from WP:EL

''What should be linked to Sites that have been used as references in the creation of an article should be linked to in a references section, not in external links. See Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Citing sources. Sources available in both web and print editions should have a citation for the print edition as well as a link.

Articles about any organization, person, web site, or other entity should link to the official site if there is one. An article about a book, a musical score, or some other media should link to a site hosting a copy if none of the "Links normally to be avoided" criteria apply.

On articles with multiple points of view, a link to prominent sites dedicated to each, with a detailed explanation of each link. The number of links dedicated to one point of view should not overwhelm the number dedicated to any other. One should attempt to add comments to these links informing the reader of their point of view. If one point of view dominates informed opinion, that should be represented first. (For more information, see Wikipedia:Neutral point of view – in particular, Wikipedia's guidelines on undue weight.)

Sites that contain neutral and accurate material not already in the article. Ideally this content should be integrated into the Wikipedia article, then the link would remain as a reference, but in some cases this is not possible for copyright reasons or because the site has a level of detail which is inappropriate for the Wikipedia article.

Sites with other meaningful, relevant content that is not suitable for inclusion in an article, such as professional athlete statistics, screen credits, interviews, or online textbooks'

I request inclusion please under the final point from what should be linked to, as the fansite has meaningful relevent content that is not suitable for inclusion in the Jack Nicholson article specifically as WP:EL states "interviews" more than 100 interviews as well as articles, screen plays etc etc. Thanks --Jackfan222 08:04, 9 September 2006 (UTC)

P.S I know in the WP:Spam policy it asks you to examine your intentions and that you should contribute not just put up a link - so let me just say I have contributed to this article and spent time providing a lot of material to support the article being made more factual. I wrote the personal life section - it has been changed since and I don't like some of the changes but I did try to make the article better.

I'm the webmaster of www.jack-nicholson.info and I've did my part of the editing in the past as well, but obviously that's something that's not important here. If it needs to be a fight who will get the one fansite link I'd rather not fight for it. It just gives me a good idea of what wikipedia is all about. Definately not an objective point of view, but more a childish way of handling things and that's a very sad thing to learn.

Fair use rationale for Image:Easyrider76.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Easyrider76.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. Fair use rationale for Image:Chinatown jack 2.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Chinatown jack 2.jpg.

You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. The Pledge?

As someone already said, I think The Pledge deserves to be mentioned. Nicholson hasnt't made a lot of films in the XXI Century, and this one is the only one not mentioned. Nazroon 15:31, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Famous people of Cork ancestry

I was hoping to add Jack to the following page. I would appreciate it if a more seasoned user might help me.

Early acting career

The following is incorrect!

"Corman directed Nicholson on several occasions, most notably in The Little Shop of Horrors , as a sado-masochistic dental patient (Wilbur Force),"

Wibur Force is the dentist's name not the patient. Jack was the undertaker going to the dentist.

Also the claim that the supporting actress won every time as well is unsourced right now. Str1977 (talk) 10:33, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with File:MikeandJack.jpg

The image File:MikeandJack.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Contradiction in article - Academy Awards

At the beginning it says:

He is also one of only two actors nominated for an Academy Award for acting (either lead or supporting) in every decade since the 1960s; the other is Michael Caine.

But, later on it says:

Nicholson has been nominated for an acting (lead or supporting) Academy Award in five different decades: 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. The only other actors who can say the same are Michael Caine and Paul Newman.

Is Paul Newman in that category as well or not? If so, shouldn't the top paragraph say one of only THREE actors nominated in every decade since the 1960s? Or am I missing something?

Actors Studio?

Jack is named as a one of allumni of actors studio. I never heard about it. Is it correct? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.151.115.9 (talk) 11:45, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Sports fan

I'm not well-informed on his sports inclinations, but this seems weird to me (as of 29 April 09): "Nicholson is a keen sports fan, regularly to be seen in courtside seats at Los Angeles Lakers basketball games in Madison Square Gardens." Lakers, yes, but at "Madison Square Gardens"? "GardenS"? NY? Monkeyzpop (talk) 14:26, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

When you see a minor mistake like that, just go ahead and edit it yourself. No need to make a big deal out of it on the talk page. MrBlondNYC (talk) 03:48, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Sorting article sections

Wildhartlivie seems to have issues with a edit of mine, changing the sectioning of the article. Some of the issues I was addressing were:

  • The "Recent years" section starts off talking about recent movies then starts talking about his personal life.
  • "Academy Awards history" is a subsection of "Recent years" for some odd reason, even though it spans 1972 - 2007.

If no one has any objections, I'll revert the page back to my most recent edit in a few days. -Roger (talk) 01:47, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

The fact that your edits were reverted means that someone has an objection to them. All you did was add a 2nd level heading, made the rest 3rd level sections under that, and instead of including Academy Awards there, put that section under a "personal life" heading instead of "recent years". There is no valid reason for adding the 2nd level heading at all. The sections are separate by section title and I'm lost as to why you think Academy Awards are part of personal life. The trend is to move away from cramming sections under a 2nd level heading. Wildhartlivie (talk) 02:03, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
> All you did was ... Academy Awards there, put that section under a "personal life" heading instead of "recent years" ... I'm lost as to why you think Academy Awards are part of personal life
Huh? I think you're confused. Take another look at my edits.
> The trend is to move away from cramming sections under a 2nd level heading
Do you have a reference for that? Most of the biographical articles I've seen (particularly those of actors) have sections sorted that way. -Roger (talk) 02:14, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
There is no discussion regarding this, I commented on a trend, if there were a discussion, it would be a style guideline. However, Angelina Jolie, Vivien Leigh, Anthony Michael Hall, and Ryan White, all featured articles, follow this style. Wildhartlivie (talk) 02:59, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

I am not callous regarding the lives of my fellow human beings. I am disdainful of the quick manner that people run here to post that someone has died who in fact has not. I can find no verifiable source that this is true. Not even from TMZ, who tend to jump on things like this. There have been false postings here of the death of scores of people - Johnny Depp, Alec Baldwin, to name two. Please provide reliable sourcing, not Facebook or Twitter gossip and it will be taken seriously. I cannot believe how fast people tend to jump on rumors. Prove it. Wildhartlivie (talk) 05:39, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Dude, I came here cause someone on HuffPo.com said he died in a car accident! I was checking to see if the article had the "This article is about a person who has recently died..." banner. Death hoaxes are NOT funny, seriously people, stop that. I honestly don't understand why some people think it's funny to make everyone panic by falsely claiming someone died. Soliloquies

I am tired of Wikipedia never reading its own definitions of soliloquies. "A soliloquy is a device often used in drama whereby a character relates his or her thoughts and feelings to him/herself and to the audience without addressing any of the other characters.[1] Soliloquy is distinct from monologue and aside." That's FROM THE WIKIPEDIA PAGE. All the freakin' time, I see what should be called a MONOLOGUE called a SOLILOQUY. I'd fix it myself, but on locked pages, I can't. For Nicholson, you're claiming that "You can't handle the truth!" comes in a soliloquy...lol, that would make it completely pointless since it would be all to himself/the audience; the reason the line is famous and powerful is because it's NOT a soliloquy, but rather, testimony. So maybe I sound like an asshole, but seriously, there's no point in Wikipedia correctly stating the difference between soliloquy and monologue and then constantly misusing soliloquy, assumingly (and "assumingly" IS a word, spellcheck, lol) because it has a "q" in it and makes the source seem more respectable and pretentious. Beeswax07 (talk) 05:50, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

I went ahead and changed it. Hopefully it won't get changed back by some wise-ass. Beeswax07 (talk) 06:23, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Talk show history

I had always known although I'm not sure how, that Nicholson had never done many Talk Show appearances and rarely does in person promotions for the movies that he's in. Recently, Conan O'Brien's website has put up a poll where fans can decide on one of the guests of on the first show. Amongst the candidates which include the Pope, Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber, and the full cast of Fat Ablert, is Nicholson. Under his nameplate, it mentions that he hasn't been on a Talk Show since 1971. If this is true, I think it's notable enough to include in this article although I'm not sure where yet. I'll be doing a little research but thought maybe someone here may be able to shed some light on the issue as well.

On a side note, I could have sworn that I saw an episode of Leno years ago where he explained why he doesn't do public appearances, etc. and he explained that it was easier for him to create an illusion where he is another person (a character in a movie) when people don't know anything about him. Maybe that will help others in a search for references. OlYellerTalktome 23:07, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

A section in this biography of Nicholson claims that after Easy Rider, Nicholson swore off talk shows but makes a note that he made exceptions in England and France. It appears that he truly hasn't done a talk show in the US since 1971 but I'm going to look deeper into the appearances in other counties. I thought it should also be noted that IMDB claims that he had been or will be on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in "2010" but I can find no other information to back that up. This may be why Conan is going for him as a sort of slap in the face to the Tonight Show (he came back for Conan instead of Leno) but that's pure speculation on my part. OlYellerTalktome 23:20, 24 October 2010 (UTC)
This article references Nicholson's fear of overexposure for his not wanting to be on talk shows. OlYellerTalktome 23:22, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

Seems to be missing Hells Angels on Wheels (1967) : [[1]]

Also this "Americana"-is Nicholson actually in it? The only articles i could find mention he is "rumored" to be in it. Neither the IMDB or official site mention his casting. At any rate it certainly wasn't released in 2011.

NPOV "greatest actor of all time"?

I modified this superlative in the first graf. He is certainly highly talented, accomplished, and admired, but I don't think a bald statement that he's "widely considered by [blah blah everybody] to be THE greatest actor of all time" is appropriate. If you have sources, multiple statements by people to that effect, though, feel free to cite them.11 Arlington (talk) 05:33, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
