Cypher?[edit]

The lead gives "cypher" as an alternative to "jam session"; I can find no other reference or usage for this term outside some mentions of "cipher" as a hip-hop event (which even then seems not to have become general usage). I am going to remove this word from the lead; if someone can come up with an informed way to mention the term elsewhere in the article feel free. Jgm (talk) 13:26, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The first few paragraphs are a bit off putting. I am sure that the first and most accurate meaning of "Jam Session" is the musical version. The first couple of paragraphs should be put in a different article. As a matter of fact, I cry Shenanigans on the first several paragraphs. Whole article just seems to be examples of bands that play improvised music. It does not explain how the term "jam" arose or provide any background on when the term was first used. Really, the whole thing could get reorganised into a list of jam bands awaiting a much improved entry for "jam" itself. 188.220.56.222 (talk) 09:41, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Blues Jam[edit]

"Jam Session" is used in non-jazz contexts too (I play in old-time and bluegrass jams -- and in fact the Wikipedia photo is of a bluegrass jam). But the description (and apparently the "WikiProject Jazz" context?) seems overly jazz focused for the general term. The description text could easily be generalized, but I'm not sure what to do about the project aspect. The various kinds jam sessions don't seem to me to be different enough to justify separate articles, so I suggest generalizing the text, and NOT connecting the resulting article to the "WikiProject Jazz" project.
