Can anyone please provide any guidance (and preferably advise via reliable sources) on the following?

  1. Place of birth (the sources disagree, stating Marylebone and Glasgow)
  2. Confirmation that Stephen was indeed a candidate for W-s-M in the '64 general election
  3. The cessio bonorum published in 1910

(As an aside, the following is of interest: research for BBC broadcast, perhaps she worked for John Arbuthnott, 14th Viscount of Arbuthnott - shame about the WP:OR, unless it's in her autobiography.) -- Trevj (talk) 15:51, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I can stand up the candidature in Weston, although it raises a few questions. "The Times House of Commons 1964", at page 183, states that the Labour candidate in Weston-super-Mare was Miss Jessie Stephen, although it gives her birthdate as "April 1899" which is six years out; alteration of birthdates is quite frequent. The other details include membership of Bristol City Council make it very likely that this is the same person. But: her occupation is given as 'shorthand typist', and her education as at 'North Kelvinside Higher Grade School, Glasgow, and at the London School of Economics' which is an odd omission as the LSE was quite a network for Labour movement activists. It also identifies her as the same Jessie Stephen who fought Kidderminster for Labour in 1931.
Now I followed that link and "The Times House of Commons 1931" p.98 states that Jessie Stephen "is a journalist and organizer of domestic servants" who is a "member of the Borough Council" (it doesn't say which but presumably Kidderminster). By the way, has anyone checked the Dictionary of Labour Biography for an entry? Sam Blacketer (talk) 22:52, 6 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks.
  • If those "The Times House of Commons" refs could be included, that'd be great.
  • I've now added the school/secretarial info from the ODNB entry. I've also emailed you about this. I understand and agree with you about changing recorded birthdates, so don't know where we stand on this.
  • I've not been able to check the Dictionary of Labour Biography. Seeing as the Labour Party office for Bristol South (UK Parliament constituency) is still on the street that Stephen lived on, perhaps they'd be able to help.
Additionally, there are a few links to relevant sources at Archives Hub.-- Trevj (talk) 09:16, 7 December 2012 (UTC) I've located a bit more info, which provides citations for the election stuff. -- Trevj (talk) 11:49, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Primary sources

[edit]

While The National Archives (United Kingdom) records themselves are primary sources, perhaps the website listings can be considered as secondary sources because they provide an author's own thinking in preparing the summaries. However, this doesn't make them independent, of course! -- Trevj (talk) 12:54, 7 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
