Opera Roles
It says here that she sang the Marchesa in Ungiorno di regno, yet on record she sang the part of Giuletta. Maybe there's a mistake. AdamChapman (talk) 16:13, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
- You are right. I changed it. I checked up on as many of the other roles as I could find and they are correct. Some I couldn't find though.Nrswanson (talk) 04:59, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
Kennedy Center Honor
She was not the youngest person to get the honor.Stevie Wonder was the youngest. He was 49. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.95.82.116 (talk) 10:21, 29 December 2007 (UTC)
Thanks
Thank you all for making this article worthy of Ms. Norman. Rebel.crusader (talk) 21:25, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Race
I don't see why there should be mention of race in articles if there's nothing relevant about that. Jr888 (talk) 13:05, 25 January 2009 (UTC)
Comment
This article needs some serious attention - it reads like it was put out by her publicist. I know we're talking about art, but can we get a *little* more NPOV here? 68.12.73.178 (talk) 05:37, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
I totally agree with you. I love Jessye Norman, but this article is like an article from a fan club or page.Amadeus webern (talk) 01:27, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
The person who started the Jessye Norman article clearly does not want anyone to "interfere" with "his" article!!! Improving atrocious grammar, removing dead links and factual inaccuracies ... in short, any attempt to improve what everyone agrees is a rubbish article on an artist who deserves better than this, is summarily reversed by him. What does one do in such a case? Iain C. Phillips 20:21, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- I don't think accusations are helpful when trying to work collaboratively with other editors. This clearly shows the changes you made to this article Iain C. Phillips. I reverted them for the reasons I gave in the edit summary. First, you made no grammatical changes to the article that I can see. Second, you removed several redlinks to notable topics which deserve coverage at wikipedia which I don't believe was the right choice. Please read Wikipedia:Red link to familiarize yourself on wikipedia's policy regaurding red links. Third, you chose to remove the section on the lawsuits involving Norman which were highly publicized. If anything, your edits made this article read even more like a puff piece by her publicist than it already does by white washing over those law suits. Please remember wikipedia is not censored. Finally, I agree this article could be vastly improved with better sourcing from independent third party sources. Given the stature of Miss. Norman's career these sources should not be difficult to find. I am certainly happy to work with you in improving this article, but it is important to try and follow wikipedia's policies in that process. Best.4meter4 (talk) 01:39, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
While I am most definitely not interested is becoming involved in a public slanging-match, I resent the implication that I am dishing out unfounded accusations; my statement is based on the fact that others have in the past pointed out errors in this article, which have been ignored and/or reversed (Wikipedia is not censored, as long as others agree with you?!). Also, my concerns about redlinks in the article echo concerns stated in April 2010 by someone else (I quote): "First, they are over-redlinked (...)". The same person goes on to say: "I saw that many of these new articles are very badly proofread (...)". Frankly, I don't think that much has changed in either your approach or your commitment to accuracy; you have in any case not even picked up on the grammatical erorrs in the Jessye Norman article .... Iain C. Phillips 18:37, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why you are attacking me as I am only one of many contributers to this article. The "creator" of this article (if such a thing can exist in an encyclopedia that anyone can edit) is User:Viajero who started this article in 2004. Many people have edited this article and continue to do so. I don't believe I have reverted any factual changes to this article, except those which were unsupported by the cited material. Wikipedia has strong guidelines when it comes to verifiability. Remember, wikipedia is not concerned with what "is true" but what is "verifiably true". Likewise, I have not reverted any changes to this article which have fixed problems. Indeed, most of my relatively few edits to this article over the last 4 years have been to revert vandalism. I did make signigicant contributions to the article in 2007 (5 years ago) as a new and inexperienced wikipedian, but have honestly not spent much time here since. On a side note, cherry picking another's comments in a totally un-related conversation off my talk page is rather rude in wikipedia edicate. I notice that you failed to note the many complementary comments made to me on my talk page.
- No matter, this conversation really shouldn't be about me but this article. I stand by what I said above, including that this article needs improving. I'm certainly not holding this article up as a paragon of excellence. If you care to improve the writing of this article please do so. Please do correct grammatical errors, and please do remove any factual inaccuracies. Wikipedia is a collaborative encyclopedia and we all edit it together to improve it. However, you have not done any of these things to the article. You make complaints about grammatical errors and factual inaccuracies but make no specific problems clear so that another editor can easily fix them. You have the power to fix them yourself and have done nothing. The few edits you have done have removed facts that are supported by referenced material; all of them distinguished publications like The Washington Post. Again, I welcome you to help improve this article in a collaborative spirit and ask that in future you abandon attacking other editors and stick to discussing specific things about this article which you believe need improving. Best.4meter4 (talk) 19:29, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Just a pedantic note: isn't "revert" intransitive? Or has its use been changed somehow by lawless Wikipedians? —Torontonian1 (talk) 21:46, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
Objective facts
This is an encyclopedia, not a commercial spot; The facts please, and nothing but the objective facts! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.215.5.162 (talk) 11:59, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- One can't reasonably discuss art and music entirely objectively, since these topics are themselves subjective. There is of course no room for original research or personal opinion when writing on wikipedia. However, we can source subjective opinions to specific critics/authors from reliable sources (ie published journal articles, newspapers, books, etc). To remove all "subjective" content would be to avoid any sort of critical appriciation discussion on Norman, both good and bad, and neuter the article to the point that it is useless. Best.4meter4 (talk) 12:31, 26 February 2011 (UTC)
- I completely agree with 4meter4. Jessye Norman is among the most noteworthy (and acclaimed) singers in our time. (The government of France chose this American to sing their national anthem at the climax of the bicentennial celebration, no less.) Her achievements and accomplishments are legion, and citing them is warranted. Charvex (talk) 11:42, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
Sourcing problems everywhere I looked-- it appears that the article was created with little knowledge of WP:RS or WP:BLP. I've flagged only a few of the non-reliable sources. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:05, 25 April 2012 (UTC)
There are some issues with the "Lawsuits" section of this article. Firstly, how is that relevant to the discussion of art and music and secondly, I have searched for court flings Lucyconlon (talk) 21:51, 8 December 2012 (UTC)Luc Conlon / documentation and I cannot find one reliable citation source to support the claims that Jessye Norman ever sued the parties, let alone in these amounts. This entire section seems like it was added by a party who may have a vested interest in it being there. If anyone can find reliable paperwork to support these potentially spurious claims, please provide them here in the talk page. Otherwise, I am going to remove this irrelevant and erroneous section.Lucyconlon (talk) 21:51, 8 December 2012 (UTC)Lucy Conlon. I have tracked down and spoken with her attorneys in Chicago and apparently, the statement attributed to Ms. Norman which was printed in the UK press was not uttered by her therefore reptition of these claims pertaining to this "statement" are seen as defamation by her counsel. Therefore, under Wikipedia's rules of removed potentially defaming or libellous statement, I am going to remove the part of the article which links to citations repeating this alleged statement.Lucyconlon (talk) 17:37, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
I opened this article to read some objective facts about Norman's unsuccessful attempt to sue Classic CD and I'm astonished to find no reference to the matter here. Is this a fan page or an encyclopedic article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.98.149.152 (talk) 12:03, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
Her recorded works?
If a reader wanted to know a few of her recordings (both complete operas and concert/studio works) to include in a modest collection, what would be the best titles? Or which albums/DVDs (what do we call them in this digital age?) have been the best sellers? WoodyinNYC (talk) 22:28, 2 January 2014 (UTC)
Honors and awards
In 2004, Jessye Norman was invited to serve as a mentor for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, an international philanthropic programme that pairs masters in their disciplines with emerging talents for a year of one-to-one creative exchange. Out of a very gifted field of candidates, Norman chose young Canadian vocalist Susan Platts as her protégée.[1] RMP2014 (talk) 13:56, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
Inner Debate
- Proof of Inner Debate over an African American Appearing with a Republican--but no problem in appearing with a former Nazi??
What's the proof that Norman debated over singing at Reagan's 2nd inauguration because she's African American, or even a Democrat? I understand the part about Norman at the time being a nuclear disarmament protester (despite the delicious irony of Reagan signing the INF Treaty two years later), but the idea that there are no prominent African American Republicans or even that Democrats might be contaminated by appearing with a Republican (and vice versa) is laughable. It would be yet again ironic because she later appears within two years, with no apparent hand-wringing according to the article, with Von Karajan who had been a Nazi party member. But I guess Republicans like Reagan (and Condi Rice today) are evil compared to former Nazis...(I'm not a Republican). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.113.147.154 (talk • contribs) 03:31, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

Question out of curiosity
I recently heard a telling of Ms. Norman's appearance at Wembley Stadium on June 11th of 1988. She closed out the 12 hour, multiple act concert with a performance of Amazing Grace. In the telling it was portrayed as a remarkable and notable event in light of her inclusion in the event along with so many contemporary music artists. I was wondering why her appearance and performance at this event is not noted in the article? I understand that it may not be of the same stature as her other musical endeavors which would answer my query. Also, I'm not saying it should be included if it does not meet the standards here at Wikipedia. Thoughts? (and thanks)THX1136 (talk) 13:52, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- She's mentioned at the Wikipedia article about that concert, Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, so I think it's worth mentioning it here in "Mid-career (1980–89)". There are plenty of sources for it, e.g. this in The Daily Telegraph. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 03:08, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
