Claims???????

[edit]

Why have the contributors written that Joanelle has "clamed" to be a member of certain nations or tribes? This is extremely slanted and derogatory. Until her word can be disputed, that is if we want to dispute her own heritage, re-phrase these sentences. Irshgrl500 (talk · contribs) 18:53, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please read: WP:NATIVE-IDENTITY for the Wikipedia guidelines about this matter. Courtesy ping @CorbieVreccan. Netherzone (talk) 22:20, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Netherzone,

I'm confused as to why you keep editing my edits on Joanelle Romero. She contributed to her own article. Can you please elaborate on the how (she) one making claims about their own heritage should be reliably sourced? Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Irshgrl500 (talkcontribs) 04:28, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Irshgrl500 Did you read the link I provided above to WP:NATIVE-IDENTITY? That should answer why and how. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and information must be sourced correctly from reliable secondary sources that are independent rather than primary sources. Biographies of living people WP:BLP has strict guidelines. BTW, I don't understand why you wrote that I "keep editing [your] edits" - I reverted your "bold" change once - to the stable version of the article; you then changed it back to your preferred version rather than waiting for other editors to weigh in for consensus per WP:BRD. Netherzone (talk) 04:58, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Irshgrl500: co-signing what Netherzone has already told you, and what I've warned you about on your talk page and in the edit summary. Stop edit-warring, read the materials you've been provided, and get up to speed. Ms. Romero should not be editing her own article, and her self-claims are not WP:RS. If you continue to edit-war your ability to edit this article, and potentially Wikipedia as a whole, will be removed. - CorbieVreccan 21:32, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

CorbieVreccan & Netherzone: I understand why my edits were reverted, and I appreciate you both adhering to Wikipedia's rules of explaining why my edits were reverted. I will say, when Netherzone originally reverted my edits, there was no explanation as to why they did so, except a reference to WP:NATIVE-IDENTITY, and it was not left on the Joanelle Romero's Talk page as you, CorbieVreccan had suggested. I know absolutely nothing of editing on Wikipedia, and became very confused 8 years ago. I tried learning but I guess a class is best for me. 2603:8001:7A48:70C:C5F8:97CE:6445:84FE (talk) 23:16, 6 March 2022 (UTC)Irshgrl500[reply]

Romero's exact words from her website were placed in the article. The default is that someone "claims to be of XXX descent," until the tribe in question confirms these claims by saying the person is an enrolled member of the tribe or a descendant of the tribe. None of the tribes that Romero claims claims her. Also, some aren't actually tribes. People are not supposed to edit their own Wikipedia articles — or their friends or staff — since that presents a conflict of interest. -Grendel-taco (talk) 15:52, 9 March 2022 (UTC)Grendel-taco[reply]

Identity claims

[edit]

User:Firefangledfeathers, Romero's claims of Native American identity aren't wp:original research. I added an interview published in Democracy Now to illustrate that her claims are ongoing and recent. If there needs to be more citation, please let me know. Yuchitown (talk) 16:38, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Yuchitown[reply]

Hi Yuchitown. I'm fine with the restored claims. The OR was mainly about the bracket editorial comment. I did change from "claim" to "say" in a couple places. It's tough to straddle the line between accepting unevidenced claims of Native American identity and casting doubt on the claims beyond what is in the body of sources. I hope we can find the happy medium. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 17:12, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The usual thought process here is that there is no verification of being of American Indian ancestry or not, and that would be original research and outside the scope of Wikipedia (unless the tribes in question confirmed one way or the other), but someone claiming an identity can be confirmed by the statements they make. A major contributor to this article...

[edit]

Are these problems generally dealt with so we can remove the template? We should have something better than imdb for the acting, but that's fairly minor. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:47, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think so. Thanks for the cleanup. I got one non-IMDB source and should be able to hunt down the rest soon. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 17:53, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"is an American actress, filmmaker, recording artist, and humanitarian." in the WP:LEAD could perhaps be trimmed a little. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:55, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Did that. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:11, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps we could change "who says she has a Native American identity," in the lead to "noted for her work on Native American topics", what do editors think? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:01, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Could you move that text and citation to the "Background" section? It is very central to her notability. Yuchitown (talk) 18:26, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Yuchitown[reply]
There is no Background section, but "she says" is in Personal life. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:31, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, yes, "Personal life" section. Yuchitown (talk) 18:38, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Yuchitown[reply]
So, is that section ok the way it is? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:27, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Btw, what is "Recording artist" in reference to? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:27, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
