Created by Silver seren (talk). Self-nominated at 23:02, 6 May 2023 (UTC). Post-promotion hook changes for this nom will be logged at Template talk:Did you know nominations/Joey Santore; consider watching this nomination, if it is successful, until the hook appears on the Main Page.[reply]

  • Good prose length, is fine with BLP, citations etc look good. Hook is of a reasonable length, citation looks fine. QPQ here is waiting on another QPQ, but it looks fine and there's no point in starting a waiting for QPQ chain. Frzzl (talk) 12:27, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • Also, sorry to be meta - you're an experienced Wikipedian, this is my first review; is this how you do them?
      • Sounds fine to me. So long as you address all the points that come up at the top of the screen when you enter a review, which you did, then everything's good. Some people give really short reviews, honestly. And if you ever want to do reviews in a more systematic way, there's a link in the "DYK Toolbox" on the upper right of the edit screen in these reviews that goes to Reviewers' Checklist, a template you can use and fill out when leaving reviews to make sure you got every relevant point. Or you can continue doing reviews in regular words like you did here (which is how I do it, I've never bothered with the template). SilverserenC 16:06, 7 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Low-brow approach"

[edit]

Santore's videos focus on a self-described "lowbrow approach to plant ecology" says the article. This is clearly self-deprecating humor. After watching a couple of videos by this guy, he seems to have a Ph.D. level of botanical knowledge. It's not "low-brow" to know the scientific names of plants, their common names, their distribution, the other members of the same genus and their distributions, the plant families, how plants are constructed and exhibiting it, their ecological role, the names scientists use to describe plants like "calyx" "inflorescence" "glabrous" etc. etc. all of which simply roll off his tongue. His constant use of profanity along with this information is also humor, I suspect. And I think his use of two different names is suspect. His educational history can't be real: kicked out of military school and a little bit of community college? If he learned all this in his spare time, while working on the railroad (gimme a break), he's a one-of-a-kind genius. Maybe he is, and maybe all this information is stories that he tells, which seems more likely to me. I have doubts. Wastrel Way (talk) Eric Wastrel Way (talk) 16:33, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The use of lowbrow in the source and from Santore is based on the second definition of the term. Not low intellect, but low cultured, because of the profanity and such. It is specifically his gimmick for the videos. As for the rest of your comment, his history is what the reliable sources say. Your opinion on said history is completely irrelevant to that. SilverserenC 20:45, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Precisely. His "low-brow" approach is humor. He says his approach is "low-brow, which is humor on humor. He is actually a very cultured and educated individual with a remarkable gift for words of all kinds. As for his biography, it seems to be based completely on what he has said about himself or told to someone else. We don't even know his birthdate (or year) or his real name. Check those "reliable sources" you will find, for instance, an interview with a distinguished botanist in San Antonio who praises Joey's knowledge and repeats what Joey has told him about his life. Let's start by finding his birth record if we want a biography that's up to standards. Wastrel Way (talk) Eric
I'd like to add that in a recent video he says he has a dozen video poker machines and three used car lots. He is apparently quite a businessman, which seems to give gives credence to the claim that he is self-taught in botany. However, the video then mentions "Polish goth guys" and the "guy in the trunk" who's "gonna start stinking" because the weather is hot. This can't be real. Wastrel Way (talk)Eric
