Barnes's Son[edit]

User 81.99.49.164 wrote that Barnes's son is gay. Since there was no citation, and the fact that is something that someone who doesn't like Barnes might say, I removed it. I looked but can't find any information that could confirm this. If anyone else can find something, please say so. Mithras6 23:30, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What does it matter if his son is gay ? Would you inform us if he was heterosexual.... and put himself about ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.218.92.38 (talk) 23:23, 31 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Celtic manager[edit]

Can someone add a section on his career as Celtic manager? 210.86.39.119 22:10, 24 February 2007 (UTC)Henry Smith[reply]

/Tv Pundit[edit]

Enjoyed a brief spell as Celtic Manager, than went into tv pundit with channel 5. Big mistake John, you are the worst tv pundit of all time!!!! STICK TO THE FOOTBALL JOHN YOU WERE CLASS AT THAT!!!— Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.52.217.5 (talk) 08:18, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Have amended the "player-manager of Celtic" part to simply "manager" as Barnes had retired as a player when he took the reins at Parkhead. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cauld1 (talkcontribs) 01:38, 8 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Goals totak[edit]

The text states a career goal total of 562 - where did this figure come from? Does not tally with the apps/goals table.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.12.171.139 (talk) 20:53, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject class rating[edit]

This article was automatically assessed because at least one article was rated and this bot brought all the other ratings up to at least that level. BetacommandBot 17:38, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nickname[edit]

It is implied that the nickname "Digger" was given to him first at Liverpool; in fact it was in common use on the terraces at Watford prior to his transfer to Liverpool - unsurprising, perhaps, as it was hardly imaginative at the time. Nickorando (talk) 13:45, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If so, can this be taken out? Also, its not clear at the moment - were all Liverpool players named after Dallas characters? Or did they all just have nicknames - if so, surely that's not really specific to Anfield? Gamesh (Gil) (talk) 20:12, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

England Caps[edit]

The article says that with 71 caps, he was "then" the most capped black English footballer. Has any other black player now been awarded a higher number of caps? Millbanks (talk) 16:09, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism[edit]

This article was linked from forums such as wsc.co.uk recently, which prompted vandalism. Suggesting locking it for a while. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.107.0.71 (talk) 20:06, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Quality[edit]

There seem to be some issues with the quality of this article. A lot of it could be more clearly expressed; I've tried to tidy it up a bit (hope that's ok) but feel it still needs some work. The 1st sentence (Barnes "is a Jamaican-born English football manager, rap artist and former player") seems like a misleading description. I'd suggest "is a Jamaican-born former English football player who played between 1981 and 2000, notably for Watford, Liverpool and England. He has also had stints in football managment and coaching, and as a rap artist". Gamesh (Gil) (talk) 20:10, 6 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I very much agree with the general thrust of what you are saying. As a general comment, I would say that the article needs a huge amount of work and is suffering from multiple problems. I have removed the reference to "rap artist" in the lead – which was completely inappropriate and, as you say, misleading. Jprw (talk) 14:08, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, that's much more like it. I agree the article still needs work; he was a great player (for England at the time anyway) and that's not coming across. He deserves better, but I'm not really qualified for that. Gamesh (Gil) (talk) 20:59, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Rapper"[edit]

Bit disingenuous to claim Barnsey as a 'Rapper' hes a lovely bloke and we love him, but rapper? He has never made money from his 'craft' so why would he be credited as a rapper ;) 86.144.169.139 (talk) 01:47, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 25 July 2020[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC criteria and their application, which Yaksar has addressed below. -- JHunterJ (talk) 15:38, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

– This is clearly the primary topic for the name John Barnes. In a google search, it took me until the fourth page of results to find any references to anyone other than the English footballer, and even then the vast majority of links point to this subject. – PeeJay 17:04, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Note: This discussion has been included in WikiProject Football's list of association football-related page moves. – PeeJay 17:05, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom.--Ortizesp (talk) 19:33, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. "John Barnes" is a very common name, with 34 entries listed at the John Barnes disambiguation page. It does not appear that the 56-year-old retired footballer commands fame of such high caliber that the combined prominence of the remaining 33 John Barneses cannot even match his singular spotlight. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 20:11, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Based on page views alone, it would seem that the footballer far eclipses the others on that disambiguation page. Here is a comparison of the page view figures for John Barnes (footballer) compared with a random selection of nine other John Barneses from that dab page. The footballer has 100 times as many views as the next most viewed page on the list. I checked the others and none even come close. – PeeJay 22:59, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • A reminder that primary topics are not determined by some arbitrary "high caliber" a subject must reach, or by the number of other subjects alone, but rather by comparative notability.--Yaksar (let's chat) 00:58, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also a reminder of the text at WP:PRIMARYTOPIC: "A topic is primary for a term with respect to usage if it is highly likely—much more likely than any other single topic, and more likely than all the other topics combined—to be the topic sought when a reader searches for that term." Thus, with a name as common as this one and the number of competitors as high as in this case, the bar is raised still higher — a random selection of nine, 19 or even 29 other John Barneses is insufficient — this John Barnes is expected to eclipse all the other 33 John Barneses combined. Otherwise, since every disambiguation page has a topic that is viewed to a greater degree than other topics on that page, every dab page would have a primary topic. However, as all of us know well, the great majority of dab pages have no primary topic. —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 02:15, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And it does. I can't provide you with a single link that compares all 33 different links, but I've totted them up and the most viewed page other than John Barnes (footballer) only hit about 600 views over the course of three weeks – given that John Barnes (footballer) got almost 56,000 views in that same period, I think it's fair to say all the others are totally eclipsed by the footballer. – PeeJay 11:51, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - not a PRIMARYTOPIC. GiantSnowman 20:34, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • What are you basing that on? – PeeJay 22:59, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Stats and search results indicate a clear primary topic.--Yaksar (let's chat) 00:58, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: There are a lot of people named John Barnes on the disambiguation page. Also a reminder of the text at WP:PRIMARYTOPIC: "A topic is primary for a term with respect to long-term significance if it has substantially greater enduring notability and educational value than any other topic associated with that term." —BarrelProof (talk) 05:16, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per WP:PRIMARYUSAGE. The footballer is getting over 95% of the pageviews over all other John Barneses combined. It's clear most readers searching for or linking to John Barnes expect this person. Station1 (talk) 18:56, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose as disambiguation is better. Even for popular footballers. Dicklyon (talk) 01:35, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support makes sense. John Barnes is far more known than all other people with that name in total. Ae245 (talk) 08:27, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nationality[edit]

He's English. If anyone wants to challenge that, please discuss it here. Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:34, 4 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

His biography always represented “Jamaican-born”, even before @V4P changed it solely to “Jamaican”. @Nehme went ahead and changed it solely to “English” as of yesterday. Both nationalities can be equally represented as it has always been. Wiki1Voice2 (talk) 23:52, 4 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
