Motives for co-operation: According to Peter Maas in the Valachi Papers Panther Edition p.30 '... on the morning of 17th July (1962), Valachi, represented by two court appointed lawyers, was permitted to plead guilty to a lesser charge of murder in the second degree and received a life sentence.' This was at the start of his co-operation which did not start smoothly: 'But the hope that he would promptly spill everything he knew soon vanished.' (p.31)
I would suggest rewriting: 'but it is also possible he was hoping for US government protection to avoid the death penalty for a murder he committed on June 22, 1962. This murder, done with a pipe from a nearby construction site, was of a man'
as: 'but it was also part of a plea bargain in which he was sentenced to life imprisonment, avioding the death penalty for a murder he committed in prison on June 22, 1962. This murder, using a pipe left near some construction work in the prison, was of a man...'
