Recluse?

[edit]

I removed the opinion about Malcolm being a recluse, since he is clearly active in public life. I'm not adding details of where he now lives, since it is not published elsewhere. Dbfirs 10:22, 19 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. I shouldn't have written that, as it was unjustified. I was wondering if the article might fall foul of Wikipedia's notability criterion, as it doesn't have a birth date, a photo or any information of his life beyond academia. Epa101 (talk) 17:53, 19 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I could take a picture of him and find out his date of birth for you if you wish (though that would be original research, but he might know of somewhere where it is published). I'll ask him first if he is happy for his biography to be on Wikipedia. He will probably say that he's not sufficiently notable, but I think we can make a reasonable case for notability if we include the Yorkshire Dales Society and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Wikipedia is rather strict about biographies, so perhaps I am being over-optimistic? Dbfirs 12:58, 21 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My! I didn't expect someone who knew Malcolm Petyt to read this article. Strictly under Wikipedia news, I don't think that your suggestion would be allowed as you could just take a photo of anyone and make up a birthdate. I am quite sure that you're telling the truth when you say that you know him, but the law is blind. I decided to create a page for him as he is mentioned in several other articles on the English language. As I see it, if you're mentioned in five or more articles, it's time for you to have an article of your own. The problem is that Malcolm didn't give much away about himself in his books. In addition, he has not attended a meeting of the Yorkshire Dialect Society for many years. I suppose that he has other duties now. Epa101 (talk) 19:22, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Wikipedia doesn't allow original research so I'll not add anything that isn't already published. I informed him that he now has a Wikipedia article and he expressed surprise. He's going to check to see if we've made any mistakes, because some articles published elsewhere about him have container errors. Dbfirs 06:44, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
