– All of these articles about Finnish church villages begin with The X church village (also known as X; Finnish: X:n kirkonkylä, Swedish: X Kapellby), where X is the name of the municipality. However, there are no references to establish "also known as X" part and the current article names. The official Finnish name of each village is either X:n kirkonkylä or an ambiguous Kirkonkylä (which makes total sense locally). I also did not find an established translation for kirkonkylä (the literal 'church village' is not found in many sources), which is why I am suggesting to use the Finnish name for each village. Oppose. Replacement of widely used parenthetical qualifier "(village)" with the lowercase term "kirkonkylä", that is opaque to most users of English Wikipedia, is not helpful. An alternative option when faced with non-unique headers delineating place names, such as "Lapinjärvi", is to use province, region or some other appropriate geographical subdivision via a comma or parenthetical qualifier, rather than a lowercase local term, per examples listed under Category:Villages by country. —Roman Spinner (talk • contribs) 16:19, 14 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is not about disambiguation with the municipality. The name 'Lapinjärvi' refers either to the lake or the municipality, but not to the village, and using it as a title is incorrect. According to the WP:NCGN, if no widely accepted English name exist, the modern official name should be used. This is also supported by the more specific Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#Finland. In this case, no established English name exist. In maps by the National Land Survey, the village name is Kirkonkylä (in Finnish, which is the majority language). This can perhaps be regarded as the official name. But Kirkonkylä is ambiguous without specifying the munipality (see fi:Kirkonkylä), which is why I suggest to use the naturally disambiguated form Lapinjärven kirkonkylä (used, for example here and in official statistics, which can be searched here). An alternative could be to use the format Kirkonkylä, Lapinjärvi. Unlike the current titles, this would not be incorrect, and those familiar with WP conventions would recognize it as a geographical name. It is also a bit vague whether "kirkonkylä" should be regarded as a proper name or not, and having it as the first word would sidestep this issue. @Roman Spinner, do you agree with this suggestion? This only works if the village is actually called "Kirkonkylä" and not just "X:n kirkonkylä". For example, the administrative center of Laukaa is "Laukaan kirkonkylä", the official village (rekisterikylä) is called Pellosniemi, not "Laukaa" or "Kirkonkylä". -- Kapulakone (talk) 04:58, 28 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
