Genre?[edit]

In the lede, her genre is listed as modern jazz, but redirects to bebop. Obviously, this is just my opinion, but I’d say her sound is pretty far from bebop. Perhaps smooth or contemporary jazz is a better label? Sethcampbell7293 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 23:35, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The couple of songs I've heard by her might be bossa nova? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.84.66.236 (talk) 23:29, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I may be a little late, but I would like to state that Laufey spans multiple genres, but is definitely not bebop. Songs like "From the Start" and "Falling Behind" are more jazz, while songs like "Promise" and "Night Light", among others, are more ballads. Some even describe her style of music and vocal vibrato characteristic like older 40s Disney music. Maximus Pinpoint (talk) 02:05, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Songs like "From the start" and "Falling behind" would be better described as bossa nova than any jazz subset (despite the obvious connection between bossa and jazz). Her "ballads" fit well in the canon of mid-century pop (related terms: traditional pop, tin pan alley era music, and easy listening). Ngort (talk) 17:57, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see. I'm not super knowledgeable on genres, so your word supersedes mine. Bossa nova is definitely Laufey, for sure. Maximus Pinpoint (talk) 19:05, 1 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Very excited to see one of my favourite Icelandic musicians here, so I'll take this review :D I can't promise that I'll get it done very quickly, but I'll make sure to have the majority of it here by Friday.  Frzzl  talk; contribs  21:19, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Got it, thank you! Will improve the article if you have any critiques. Arconning (talk) 02:42, 3 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So sorry for taking such a horribly long time to do this review, a first pass is below. I'll do an at-least second pass and spotchecks when you're ready.  Frzzl  talk; contribs  22:03, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I believe most of the issues have been addressed, can't find any articles or RS' on Laufey's fashion, please let me know if there's anything more I can add! Arconning (talk) 12:50, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Found some sources about her fashion! Hope everything turns out well. Arconning (talk) 14:02, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well done! I've spotchecked - one failed, one needs tweaking, and I've added two small points about the Career section. Once you've addressed them, I'll be happy to close the review and promote :D  Frzzl  talk; contribs  11:50, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Frzzl I've addressed them all, hope the review goes well! :D Arconning (talk) 13:34, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Prose[edit]

Lede[edit]

  • Good on the whole
  • try and remove some of the parentheses to make the prose more fluent. e.g. Laufey was a finalist on Iceland's Got Talent (2014) before she was a semi-finalist on The Voice Iceland (2015). -> "Laufey was a finalist in the 2014 edition of Iceland's Got Talent, and a semi-finalist on The Voice Iceland the next year.
    • Done.
  • Get rid of the citation; include the Chopin bit later in the article; all lede info should be repeated anyways.
    • Done.
  • I know that the article title's parenthesised, but considering that this is the article that anyone who simply searches "Laufey" will be first directed to, a disambiguation hatnote is probably warranted.
    • Done.

Early life and education[edit]

  • Remove the "currently", this is sure to date. Replace with "As of October 2023" or similar.
    • Done.
  • Source 11 has reliability disputed - could you find a different citation? If not, I've seen NME at least mention that she moved frequently between the two countries.
    • Done.

Career[edit]

  • Nice and complete, but this needs a copyedit to introduce some more relative timephrases, to consolidate the prose. At the moment, this feels more like a timeline than an overview. Things like "a month later" will help a lot.
    • Done.
  • Source 22 (rev. 1202258491) doesn't seem reliable - is there any secondary coverage of this.
    • Done. Replaced.
  • italicise "Alternative New Artist Album"
    • Done.
  • Move the last sentence of the section into "Critical acclaim"
    • Done.

Influences[edit]

  • I don't think this works as a standalone paragraph; I'd like to see this as a paragraph under a broader "Style" section or similar - I think there's definitely the opportunity to write more about how critics have described Laufey's art and musical style, her place between genres. I've also seen some discussion from RS' about her fashion; you could likely get at least 100-200 words on her public appearance etc.
    • Made style section, will add more about her fashion, art and music style, etc.

Discography & Awards[edit]

  • Well-formatted and complete lists - I think that I won't have anything to say on this past spotchecks.

Images[edit]

  • Both images are appropriately liscenced (I checked the YouTube one, looks like no-one's gotten around to it yet) The captions are fine.

Refs[edit]

  • Ref layout meets the GA criteria - I like the condensation of multiple sources into one reference.
  • I do source spotchecks last, so I'll wait until you're done with comments above first to check source-prose correspondence/paraphrasing/copyvio & c. haha

Spotchecks[edit]

  • 12 citations (as of rev 1206528917) - mostly concentrated on the biographical details since this is a BLP
  • ref 1 - passed for copyvio, failed for verifiability (doesn't state her Chinese name)
    • Added, done.
  • ref 22 - passed for copyvio and verifibility
  • ref 23 - passed for verifiability - perhaps tweak a little bit since you're using the exact same wording
    • Done.
  • refs 28, 29 - both passed for copyvio and verifiability
  • refs 3, 13 - both passed for copyvio and verifiability in all usages

I went through some of the charts record refs - they can't really fail copyvio haha, but I saw no problems so well done! Just find a citation for Laufey's Chinese name, and paraphrase that one point, and the refs are fine.

Misc.[edit]

  • Article is about as stable as can be expected from a MILLION high-traffic page; no problems, good job keeping the vandals under control!
  • Article is well focussed on Laufey; per above it could be a little broader.
  • I see no problems with neutrality - where a subjective opinion is included, its author is close, and context is given.

Post-promotion hook changes for this nom will be logged at Template talk:Did you know nominations/Laufey (singer); consider watching this nomination, if it is successful, until the hook appears on the Main Page.[reply]

  • Article meets DYK standards – well-sourced, neutral, and free of plagiarism. Hook is sourced, neutral (well, attributed, so it works). Definitely interesting! Good to go. ezlev (user/tlk/ctrbs) 04:07, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Icelandic-Chinese?[edit]

Looks like the singer herself identifies as Icelandic-Chinese according to her website’s about page, this should probably be updated. BlackSpade741 (talk) 18:47, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No it shouldn't. The Icelandic and Chinese in her instagram bio refers to her ethnicity, not her nationality. The same way the Olivia Rodrigo is not called Filipino-American in the lead of her article. Yes Rodrigo has Filipino ancestry, but her nationality is American. She has never claimed that her nationality is Filipino. It is not a situation like Tara Strong who is Canadian-American (even tough she is called Canadian and American in the lead), to my knowledge, Laufey was never raised or lived in China (unlike Strong, who has lived in both Canada and the U.S.). This is only going to cause edit wars like that of the article of singer Dalida (which had a Semi-protection on it due to edit wars on whether Dalida should be defined as Italian, French, or Egyptian in the lead), I strongly advise against calling Laufey "Icelandic-Chinese" in the lead. 70.50.199.125 (talk) 02:37, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 7 May 2024[edit]

– I'm requesting to move the singer to Laufey because it seems that most people are looking for the singer. The pageviews show that the singer gets 10x the amount of views constantly. PS this is my first RM so please be patient: I'm still figuring this out. - The Sharpest Lives 14:49, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support 2nd, it may be better to have a DAB at the base name as the mythology may still be primary by the 2nd criteria. Crouch, Swale (talk) 18:30, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: My largest concern here is the "long-term significance" and "greater enduring notability and educational value" (WP:PT2). Laufey (the singer) has only been active since 2020, whereas the figure Laufey obviously has long-standing significance in a variety of fields and will continue to have influence. Additionally, according to my understanding of WikiNav, far fewer than half of the people who land on the Laufey page then move to the singer's page; only 1.18% of the page views on Laufey (singer) are from people landing on Laufey first. I'm open to hearing from others, though. Significa liberdade (she/her) (talk) 23:29, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support disambiguation. We are clearly doing a disservice to our readers by having the mythological figure be the primary topic against >90% of the pageviews. The long-term significance argument is, of course, a valid reason to not have the singer be primary, but it doesn't mean the mythological figure should be primary. The analysis of the WikiNav results above is faulty; people who land on the mythological figure page are already a self-selected cohort, having landed there via internal link (almost entirely correctly directed), Google search (having access to the article preview snippet), and Wikipedia search (having the singer pop up as an alternative option in the drop-down), so whether or not outgoing pageviews to Laufey (singer) is over or under 50% is irrelevant. -- King of ♥ 04:48, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
