FL todo list...[edit]

...is the following:

  1. Provide references for all submissions
  2. Provide references for the fact that the films were not nominated (trivial but apparently necessary)
  3. Do the last redlink (Croatian Film Makers Association - decide whether it's maybe Filmmakers or Film Makers' etc. beforehand)
  4. Do a bit of copyedit if necessary
  5. Possibly expand the prose

That should be it. I'm working on #1 currently. GregorB (talk) 19:25, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Roger that. I started doing a stub for HDFD yesterday but got distracted by some unrelated discussions. I'll do it now - as for the name, their website does not have an English language version but I remember seeing it listed as "Croatian Film Makers Association" in some English-language directories. This form (without the apostrophe) looks strange but there are guilds like the Screen Actors Guild. Timbouctou (talk) 19:33, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, "Film Artists' Association of Croatia" yields 194 results while "Croatian Film Makers Association" yields 8. Timbouctou (talk) 19:36, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Um... Yeah, apparently it's Film Artists' Association of Croatia. In fact, now I've noticed that some of the sources for the submissions use that name. GregorB (talk) 19:42, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
HDFD is done. I've done a minor CE on the intro section and expanded the prose a little bit. I don't know what else o write about. Perhaps saying something about the film industry in general and how almost all films are funded by the state? I don't know. I've compiled the list of Croatian-produced films which had been submitted during Yugoslavia (see below). So apart from referencing we are done here. The text might still need some tweaking but that can wait for the FL review. Maybe the references should be formatted a bit differently but I don't know what the preferred format is so this can be done during the review. I think it's ready to be nominated. Timbouctou (talk) 11:11, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. I think that the article should keep to whatever is pertinent to the Academy Award process, and there isn't much to say that isn't already said. I suppose you've checked the similar FLs (Czech, German, Japanese, Indonesian) - I wouldn't say we're missing anything. So I'd say that we're pretty much done apart from #1 and #2 above. #2 should be trivial anyway. GregorB (talk) 11:26, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that #1 is a bit harder than expected - but haha, I found this.
One more thing: 1 Oct - 30 Sep window is actually the Academy's rule. If you agree, I'd say simply that HDFD enforces both the Academy's and HDFD-specific rules, and then go on with the example of financial-obligations-fulfilled, etc. GregorB (talk) 17:11, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
All refs are there except for Vukovar: The Way Home, which is a tough one. GregorB (talk) 19:55, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nailed down that one too. That's it, as far as the table itself is concerned. Pretty tiresome, because we needed 38 refs where one could be sufficient, but there you have it. GregorB (talk) 21:04, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Croatian nominations[edit]

From the "History of cinema in Croatia":

Three Croatian films have managed Oscar nominations but, paradoxically, all three were directed by non-Croatians: Italian Giuseppe De Santis for Cesta duga godinu dana (A Road One Year Long, 1958), Slovenian France Stiglic for Deveti krug (Ninth Circle, 1960) and Montenegrin Veljko Bulajic for Bitka na Neretvi (Battle on the River Neretva, 1969).

Might be used in the text. GregorB (talk) 20:00, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sure but if they were not directed by Croatians what makes them Croatian? They obviously mean "produced by Croatian studios" like Croatia Film and Jadran Film. This should be mentioned if it ends up in the article. Timbouctou (talk) 20:14, 22 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yugoslav nominations[edit]

I've compiled the following table of films which were produced by Croatian film studios and submitted as Yugoslavia's candidates. These were produced entirely by Croatian studios. There are also others in which Jadran Film and Croatia Film were involved as co-producers, but I've excluded those because we have to draw a line somewhere (most notably, the Academy Award-winning The Tin Drum which was co-produced by Jadran Film and shot in Croatia didn't make it). The film industry in ex-Yugoslavia was fragmented (like many other things) and each republic had its own studios and made their own films, although directors and particularly actors could move freely from one studio to another. Data sourced from IMDb. I'm posting it here because I'm not sure if we should include this. I think it's worth a mention but others' opinion may differ. Might be used to expand the intro, should the need arise. Successful nominations by De Santis and Štiglic might receive a honorable mention in particular. GregorB (talk) 09:26, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bulajić's submissions[edit]

I'm having problems finding a reference for the fact that he had a total of 8 of his films submitted. GregorB (talk) 09:27, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I cannot find it either. Maybe we should drop that piece of information of rephrase that sentence. Btw how about we move the references to a separate column for purely aesthetic reasons? :) Timbouctou (talk) 01:51, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed on both. GregorB (talk) 07:41, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And now there's a good opportunity to use stuff from the preceding section of this talk page. GregorB (talk) 07:44, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done that. Now, what to do with Bulajić? If we cut it out, the third paragraph will apparently need to be merged with the second. GregorB (talk) 19:44, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Bulajić is out, and there are still 3 paragraphs, albeit with slightly reordered content. GregorB (talk) 11:44, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. I only expanded the previous nominations bit in the lead a little bit, adding film company information for De Santis' and Štiglic's films. I think we're good. Timbouctou (talk) 21:36, 4 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
