Character names, translations

[edit]

Please explain how the Finnish language names are original? They are as much a translation of the original Swedish as the English, French and any other language version of the character names? Would it be right to give the Dutch language names for characters in a French language Belgian author's work? The Swedish names are the originals. 94pjg 21:42, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The image Image:Buka.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

I'm removing the links that just redirect back to this page, or to the main moomin page. Also removing all the redlinks. Likely, all the minor characters don't need separate articles, and if any are created it's easy enough to link them then. Siawase (talk) 12:25, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposals

[edit]

I propose that some of the characters in Category:Characters in the Moomin series be merged into List of Moomin characters. There has been some debate as to whether these stub articles are notable on their own, and some articles such as Moominmamma have sat with a reference tag for over 2 years, but have not been expanded beyond a simple paragraph. These articles would be better preserved by being merged into this list, rather than simply being deleted. Fortdj33 (talk) 18:56, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree the articles where good third person sources cannot be found should be merged. Dwanyewest (talk) 22:38, 11 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I also agree. For example: the Snork Maiden, however delightful in her own right, has not attracted editorial attention of the desired level. Chromatistes (talk) 15:23, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

List format criteria?

[edit]

For the Close Friends and Other Character sections, what criteria was used to rank the lists? By some kind of perceived importance of the characters? By order of appearance in the body of work? Randomly? I suggest that unless there's some kind of unnamed criteria that orders the lists, that they be alphabetical. Thank you, Wordreader (talk) 21:45, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done. --Cornellier (talk) 22:56, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

More explicit etymologies

[edit]

”Mymla” is translated as “to love”, I would suggest that the term looked for is more straightforwardly “to have sex”. ”Homsa” is also more adequately translated as “poofter”, obviously derived from ”homosexuell”. See further Boel Westin’s Tove Jansson. Ord, bild, liv.

I have been able to find no confirmation anywhere for either of those claims. I suspect trolling. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 11:58, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The official Moomin website has an article about it, and there are other references to the meaning of "homsa" online. I find no reason to assume Westin didn't write about this, as referenced by the IP user. /Julle (talk) 21:11, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
