Comments[edit]

This article consists mainly of unreferenced entries, and was moved from the article List of commemorative days because, well, months really aren't days, by any reliable definition.

Many funny entries exist in this list, but that doesn't mean they're all hoaxes. Still, if any can't be referenced, they should be removed. YrPolishUncle (talk) 19:37, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Doing a bit of an overhaul, removed the heritage/awareness months section because many of the dates are in the other sections or were left out from original section. Trying to find more sources/references for some of the dates Supervegan 23:18, 31 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This article is a bad joke. It belongs on uncyclopedia or another "humor" site. Citation needed for National Don't Eat Cheese Before Noon Month, for example. Staypuft9 (talk) 19:03, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Don't Eat Cheese Before Noon and After Noon were entered by the same IP back in April. I couldn't find anything on Google for either full phrase that didn't look like it was taken off of this page. I think that a Wikipedia user may have started another widespread hoax. 63.87.189.17 (talk) 03:02, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly, the vast majority of this is just ridiculous. Example: June's "*National Papaya Month? (or September)"... It's pretty obvious they don't have references here. This page has to be totally revamped, or just deleted. Iameditingstuff (talk) 21:23, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ben 10 month? South America? I can not find a single source that says that this exists. I get that October is the tenth month of the year, and its Ben 10, but really?? The fact that it says South America makes me think that it's a joke. An American show with a month of celebration in South America? It just doesn't add up. MyWikiIsBanned (talk) 02:47, 20 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Help[edit]

There are some National Month names that are on more than one. For example Native American Heritage Month is on Feburary and March both. Do we really celebrate it for 2 months? I thought we only celebrated it for one? HELP! T.T

~Garfield Turtle Anime~ (talk) 12:06, 4 January 2009 (UTC) Hajiru[reply]

Given that nobody celebrates these anyway, it's likely they actually did accidently get made into a month twice, or that there are arguments over which month they're in. Anyway, I wouldn't worry as nobody really celebrates Native American history during those months more than any other day of the year. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.212.121.69 (talk) 01:25, 4 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Who invents this stuff, anyway??????

Seriously, when I hear, for example, "October 3rd is Take Your Cat To The Movies Day", or something equally ridiculous, I really wonder who makes this stuff up.

I think we should start a category of "Holidays of Questionable Origin" or maybe even "Holidays that Nobody Observes".

Alphabetization[edit]

Should each month's listing be alphabetized? (And maybe disregarding "National" so that the topic names are the source of the ordering?) Paulmnguyen (talk) 15:04, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good call. Gonna do it. —Verbistheword (talk) 16:43, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Seems rather U.S.-focused, not that the entries or references indicate ...[edit]

(1) If anyone has access to a copy of Chase's Calendar of Events, that would be helpful for looking into any unsourced or missing entries. (2) Some awareness months are marked at different parts of the year in different parts of the world. For instance, Australia's Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month falls in February, while in the U.S., it takes place in September. (I'll add the citations to the article in a moment.) We should make an effort to make the list more globally relevant, while still insisting upon citations so that even more vandalism doesn't accrue. Lawikitejana (talk) 01:08, 3 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pruning[edit]

I'm going to add "citation needed" to the items without a citation, and if nobody objects I'll remove them in a couple of weeks. Sjö (talk) 18:37, 11 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More research needed in presidential proclamations[edit]

Celebrations such as commemorative months are proclaimed by the POTUS.[1] I quickly went through and found proclamations for about half of these months by searching whitehouse.gov for "proclamation + [key word]".

A next step will be to go through and more carefully search for specific months without proclamations cited—common names for the celebrations sometimes differ from those used by the proclamations. —Verbistheword (talk) 16:41, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Add "Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder(PMDD) Awareness Month" to the month of APRIL.

Keeping this article and the various articles on months in sync[edit]

There is a clear consensus for:

Proposal C: Keep doing what we're doing, and maintain them separately.

As of now, the contents of this article and the various articles on months are not in sync, for example, see August#Month-long_observances, which is almost completely different. There's a few different ways we could solve this, which i'll put below in a comment. --MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 01:42, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Below are the proposals:
Proposal A: Convert each month's list into a template, and have both this article and it's month transclude it. I.e. {{Month-long observances/August}}
Proposal B: Redirect the Month long observances section in the month articles to this article.
Proposal C: Keep doing what we're doing, and maintain them separately.
--MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 01:45, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Do note that, this being an RFC, you do not have to choose between the 3 proposals I provided, and can say whatever you like. MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 01:46, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Proposal C I think it could stay as is. Its easy enough to navigate with the headings being named by each month and I don't see any reason to alter that. Cook907 (talk) 20:32, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Cook907, That isn't being altered. What is being altered is the contents of each heading, the actual list of observances in that month. MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 16:45, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I still believe it should stay as is either way. This page is easy to navigate the way it is, why fix what isn't broken? Cook907 (talk) 17:50, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Proposal C Agree with the rational above/ Makes sense as it is/ Comatmebro (talk) 04:54, 15 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Proposal C but that doesn't mean the main article and the monthly sub-articles should completely ignore each other. I just think it's acceptable for the main article and the month articles to have different WP:LISTCRITERIA, which they seem to. So, the main article may just list the most important/most notable month-long observances, while the month articles list more month-long observances, broken down by country, etc. I don't see any reason that the main article and the month articles must be the same, so not proposal A. Similarly, I see no reason why we can't have a more-detailed monthly list of monthly observances, so not proposal B. That leaves me with C, although I wouldn't necessarily say "keep doing what we're doing", but rather, establish and enforce a LISTCRITERIA that make sense for both the main and the monthly articles (which will help bring stability). I think it would be great if we could put a picture of the globe 🌎 on the top of Month-long Observances. Maybe a picture of the globe with two sides of the Earth showing the East and the West.
