development[edit]

Just started this list-article with a dump of NRHP places having "Plantation" in their name. If this is to be developed, the table format should be changed. Other places not having Plantation should be added. I see that there is a category, Category:Southern plantations in the United States which has subcategory of plantations in each southern state. Those provide many more plantations. doncram (talk) 05:14, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, how about making the table more like the NRHP list-articles, with a picture column and without the NRHP refnum. And sortable by state and by name of plantation. And with coordinates added to a location column, so they can all be seen on a big Google map. doncram (talk) 05:48, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I went ahead and made this sortable without checking the discussion first. Please feel free to revert. Of course, I wanted to check the MD entries;-> --Pubdog (talk) 12:35, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, glad you made the columns sortable. Hope you will add/correct MD listings. Not sure if i want to develop the format of this table more, or leave it to someone more interested in the specific topic. I would be happy to help with any formatting questions though, if i can. doncram (talk) 22:15, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to ask a consideration. I am wondering if I am the only one who's baffled, puzzled and even shocked at the contributors failure to mention the dates these plantations were constructed? The dates they were NRHP registered is rather irrelevant to me as a historian (and most of the architects I have Consulted) as compared to the original dates these purported plantations were originally constructed. Is it possible to start requiring the entries to include the date the property was constructed? It makes it much easier when one is looking for accurate source/date references. Thank You Rahiim03 (talk) 22:37, 22 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have no problem with dates being added if you so desire. With Wikipedia being a collaborative effort, you are more than welcome to go through all of these listings and add the bits of info with references that you desire to the tables. Alas, I don't have the inclination or the time at present. Altairisfar 17:16, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I really don't have the time or inclination to add them either, and that was not the point. But I and others, however, will be forced to look to sources other than your Wikipedia listings when trying to research the age & authenticity of America's treasured antebellum plantationsRahiim03 (talk) 17:33, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you could always go to the articles that this list provides you with links to. The dates and other info within the articles usually come from the National Register Information System, unless otherwise noted. Altairisfar 18:10, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

U.S. vs. non-U.S. plantations[edit]

I think it is fine if anyone wants to add plantations from outside the U.S., probably best in separate country-specific sections. For now, the one section with a big table covers just U.S. plantations, mostly ones listed on the NRHP. doncram (talk) 22:15, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

formatting[edit]

Hey to Caponer and others developing. Would you like to decide if the small table format example is a format you'd like to work with. I could convert the rest of the entries to that format pretty easily. It would allow for including thumbnail pics, which i happen to like. Comments welcome. doncram (talk) 00:52, 23 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I like having a photographic list, but removed the test table for now since no comments have been made since 2009. The only problem with that type of list would be maintenance and the fact that many of the properties may never have photos. The current format, even though it is much simpler, was chock full of vandalism and errors that had to be manually corrected. What about two separate lists, such as all of the plantations that are NHL's in their own illustrated list and then the current simple list for all of the others? Hi Altairisfar, i've been noticing ur editing occasionally. List-article is looking surprisingly good! I like the first tables esp. as they have so many pics.
About formatting, how about using the template:sort to combine the "County/Parish" and "State" columns into one sortable column. Freeing up one column to be a description or Notes column. E.g., as i did in a test edit for the 2 row National Memorial section, in this edit. I think that works. By the way Arlington and some other Virginia cities are independent cities, not counties or parishes, but i think just naming them in the county/parish field as county-equivalents without any further explanation is fine. --Doncram (talk) 17:32, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I plan to add a column for the designated date for the regular NRHPs, but there is soooo many of them. And also planning to add more columns to the "Others" table later on and develop it further too, just haven't had enough time lately. Consolidating the county and states into one column and adding a space for notes is fine by me. Altairisfar 21:51, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Move[edit]

I went ahead and moved the U.S.-centric listings to their own list and left the old page as an international listing with a link to this list. Hope no one minds... Altairisfar 06:23, 17 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal to consolidate columns[edit]

Please see discussion at Talk:List of plantations in Louisiana concerning a proposal to consolidate columns in these lists. Altairisfar (talk) 04:34, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
