Why is there a section named "lorum ipsum"[edit]

There is a section named January X that has "Lorum Ipsum". Is there any reason for this? MrMeAndMrMeContributions 21:44, 6 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Possible third tug involved in "Goliath/TasPort Tugs" incident?[edit]

Civil ensigns[edit]

Large numbers[edit]

MOS:NUMERAL states this - "Integers from zero to nine are spelled out in words. Integers greater than nine expressible in one or two words may be expressed either in numerals or in words (16 or sixteen, 84 or eighty-four, 200 or two hundred). When written as words, numbers from 21 to 99 are hyphenated (including when part of a larger number): fifty-six or fifty-six thousand but five hundred or five thousand." There is no way that 292 can be spelled out in "one or two words". I've therefore reverted the latest change to words and semi protected the article for a month. Could someone fix this?[edit]

 Done. With some futzing around, I found out {{convert}} is pretty versatile:

  • {{convert|0.25|mi}} gives: 0.25 miles (0.40 km)
  • {{convert|1/4|mi}} gives: 1⁄4 mile (0.40 km)
  • {{convert|1/4|mi|m}} gives: 1⁄4 mile (400 m)

I have been trying toslip between the Edit Conflicts to add this: (Exactly. So far I have only seen claim that the sinking was in Pravda (ru) around 27/2. I suggest await two RS and consider them carefully - there is a lot of misquoting going on in the media.)
However, the Ukrainian Shipping Magazine looks like a RS, with a named editorial team, and it reads as if properly informed. But I don't think that you can assume a date of 24/2 - firstly "This was done in the first hours" may be figurative - but more importantly it is ambiguous as it may be referring to "a decision was made". Or it may be the the first hours of the Battle of Mykolaiv, the 26th. Clarity of this will no doubt emerge.Davidships (talk) 20:17, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Scope, scale, and organization[edit]

Hello all, I was hoping to spur some discussion on something that's been bugging me somewhat for the past few weeks. I'm not an expert on the naval side of wikipedia, but I've been working more and more on recently wrecked ships which have been in the news. I very regularly reference this list as inspiration for what article to write next, and think that the vast arrays of lists of shipwrecks over the years is extremely impressive and important.

However, it seems like the overall organization is somewhat, haphazard, I suppose. From what I have seen, there is no criteria for inclusion, and the scope is not well-defined. I think the majority of my confusion on the organization of this topic comes from two points:

  • First, what ships merit inclusion? Does any shipwreck count, no matter how small? Some ships as small as 40ft are listed, so where is the line? In other words, if the dinghy I use in the lake behind my house sprung a leak and a news outlet picked it up, would we include that?
  • Second, why do we list things that are not shipwrecks? It seems that there are three topics that the wiki organizes things into: maritime disasters, shipwrecks, and maritime "incidents". Only disasters and shipwrecks have lists, but "incidents" are included in the navboxes on these pages. Looking at the maritime disasters pages, they just seem to be a more selective list of shipwrecks. My question is, what defines a disaster vs shipwreck vs incident? It looks like many of the ships on the 2022 shipwrecks article are not actually shipwrecks (some of which I've written articles on, like Namura Queen or Helt or several others) but rather just maritime incidents... or perhaps disasters, depending on the criteria.

From my perspective, we need to do a bit of reorganization and lay out written criteria for inclusion on these list articles. If that criteria is the same as what is unwritten right now, so be it, but realistically there should be some rules that are explicit rather than inferred. Secondly, I think we need to lean into the three categories of disasters, shipwrecks, and incidents. I'm just spitballing, but disasters could be high-casualty or high-damage events of particular notability (on the caliber of the Titanic or Lusitania), shipwrecks should be instances where the ship actually touches the bottom of the sea (regardless of whether it's raised again or not), and incidents covering anything else (like a fire, or missile strike, or seizure, etcetera).

I think I've rambled plenty, and would really like to hear some input from those of you who actively maintain these lists. If it seems that there is a level of consensus for change, I would love to be a part of that! @Fritzmann2002: - It's a bit of a tricky question. To be a WP:SHIPS article, a vessel needs to be 100 tons (whether GT, GRT, displacement or whatever) or 100' length. Any vessel meeting this and is wrecked or severely damaged is includable. For smaller vessels, it's on a case-by-case basis. If there is an article, then the vessel should be included. If no article, then it may, or may not, merit an entry. Pleasure yachts, dinghies etc are almost always non-includable. Ocean racing yachts tend to be includable. Individual entries are always up for discussion either at the shipwreck lists talk page or at WP level. Mjroots (talk) 06:32, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Mjroots: that seems pretty reasonable, but doesn't appear to be reflected by the list itself. A large number of vessels on the list are completely unidentified, non-notable boats. If those are the guidelines, they should be included in a section at the start of the list article, so editors and readers know what merits inclusion. Just after a brief looks (this is not exhaustive), there are numerous entries that I personally believe have no business being on the list, of which these are a few:
  • 22 January: an unidentified sailboat took on some water and got towed to port. Not a shipwreck, not a notable event, not a notable ship.
  • 30 January: neither of these belong, but the worse is the unidentified "panga". This is literally the backyard dinghy I referred to. It's not a shipwreck (washed ashore), there were no people, and the back half of the blurb is unreferenced.
  • 19 February: a kayak! Certainly this does not belong. I will hold firm in the statement that a kayak is not a ship.
  • 20 February: a "plastic" boat? I understand someone died, but this does not seem to be about the shipwreck or the boat, and the sources give those only passing mention.
I didn't even mention the 10+ instances of unidentified migrant boats sinking. Those could probably merit inclusion in some list, but really just seem to clutter this one. Perhaps a "list of migrant boat wrecks" would be warranted. Anyways, these are just a few examples of the cruft that needs to be cut, and the guidelines that need to be put in place so that it does not continue to be added.
