Requested move[edit]

The result of the proposal was moved. It appears the "List of songs recorded by" is dominant. --BDD (talk) 18:29, 4 October 2012 (UTC) (non-admin closure)[reply]

List of Harry Connick, Jr. songsList of songs recorded by Harry Connick, Jr. – The lead of the article says, 'songs recorded by Harry Connick, Jr.,' and there is no logical reason that the article title should not reflect precisely what is contained in the article. To revert unnecessary move..Richhoncho (talk) 22:32, 24 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm all for reverting undiscussed moves but what's wrong with the current title (cf. List of Johnny Cash songs and others). See also WP:PRECISION which used to read "Name an article as precisely as is necessary...but avoid over-precision". —  AjaxSmack  21:38, 27 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Because, as I look down the list I note the first half-a-dozen entries are not "Harry Connick, Jr. songs" and it could also be interpreted as songs on his ipod, songs he wrote, songs he produced, songs he danced to in high school. This list was created as "recorded by", contains "recorded by" and what harm in adding the qualifier, especially for somebody who is not familiar with HC Jr and wants to learn more?.
  • I also draw you attention to some of the other lists in this category, "List of songs written by XXXX, "List of songs with lyrics by XXXX, Are these too precise? No they are not, they are merely accurate. IF WP is not going to be accurate, we might as well admit it's the largest graffiti wall in the world. --Richhoncho (talk) 00:38, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • A bit hyperbolic but the argument sounds reasonable. Thanks. —  AjaxSmack  03:06, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about the hyperbole. Horses and hobbies and so on. Cheers. --Richhoncho (talk) 07:03, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Disagree. Like I said on Talk:List of Frank Sinatra songs, we're splitting hairs here. There is no discernible difference between a "Harry Connick, Jr. song" and a "Song recorded by Harry Connick, Jr." Also, the current title format mirrors other such song lists (e.g. List of The Beatles songs and List of Pink Floyd songs). You can always create a new column for "date of release" as well, or even have it replace the "date recorded" column completely.Father McKenzie (talk) 18:12, 28 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • Additional comment : WP Policy say that article names should follow WP:NDESC and WP:PRECISION. The present title does NOT meet the criteria of these two policies, being neither descriptive nor precise.--Richhoncho (talk) 14:02, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Additional information[edit]

Since this and other nominations for renaming there has also been a discussion at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Songs#Naming_conventions_for_list_articles where there is a consensus that the convention should be List of songs recorded by [artist]. 3 other RM nominations have already been resolved as List of songs recorded by Jennifer Lopez, List of songs recorded by Perry Como and List of songs recorded by Rihanna and the greater majority of articles now use this format. This RM discussion should now be closed as move to proposed title. --Richhoncho (talk) 10:33, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
