Article incorrectly states that he criticized Palestine

[edit]

This wikipedia article states that he believes that "Palestinians have pushed moderate Israelis too far," which is drawn from this Guardian article.. However, that article issued a correction for this statement, noting that it was an incorrect representation. In reality, Lupe Fiasco has criticized Israel for its stance toward Palestine, and has explicitly supported Palestine, for example as attested in this article from the Jerusalem Post. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:19C:4600:5640:656A:C604:12EE:9007 (talk) 04:01, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In the bio early life it says his parents were both working professionals and business people and yet it goes on some mess about him living in public housing in Chicago and next to a crackhouse in Harvey. Seriously? Why didn't this clash of information stand out to anyone else? ˜˜˜˜David Hearne

Gotta Eat

[edit]

The song is about poor nutrition on its face, but almost every line is a double entendre, giving commentary not only on nutrition but also on the havoc wreaked by the drug trade, drug addiction, and poverty. 24.34.93.184 (talk) 00:08, 2 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ESL contributor(s)?

[edit]

A lot of this article sounds like it was written by someone whose first language isn't English. The info is worthwhile but the writing is often grammatically messed-up in an ESL kind of way (e.g. "the delay of the release for the album remains to be unclear thus resulted in fans later putting together an online petition demanding that Atlantic Records release Lasers.") or just a little strange. It would be nice if a native English-speaker who can edit locked posts could go through this whole article and make it sound a bit more natural. 24.57.9.7 (talk) 06:23, 31 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Overseas Family

[edit]

The article describing his father is no longer online.

.

While Wasalu/Lupe was born in Chicago, he was also raised the majority of his life in Philadelphia but he is known to have a half brother located in London, England, Haris Adu, aka successful grime MC Legit. Adu, who has adoped Lupe's name "Wasalu" as his own, is also a student at the acclaimed Royal Holloway University of London.

Beginnings of rap music

[edit]

Where it says he learned about rap, it says he was first put off by the vulgarity of NWA's lyrics, then was turned on to the lighter side of rap in 1996 when listening to Nas' album at the age of 17. But in 1996 he would have been 14, assuming we have his correct date of birth. Am I missing something? Also under influences section, Lupe reference to Street Fighter in Gold Watch is improperly quoted it is stated that he hates Zangief not Vega in the song. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jed Bartlet (talkcontribs) 20:48, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Birthdate

[edit]

I have removed the birthdate information out of the article as an edit war has started over it and no two reliable sources either exist or claim the same birthdate:

This needs be discussed and agreed on before being re-added. Mfield (talk) 04:51, 24 December 2008 (UTC) According to his own website bio[1], he was 25 when that was written in Oct 07 so that confirms the 1982 date at least. Mfield (talk) 04:53, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edit war? Overexaggeration. TV.com is automatically out since it's user generated. As for the other three… That's where the problem occurs. DiverseMentality 04:56, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, its better to prevent a war than have to deal with one later on, that is what this page is here for after all. Didn't notice the TV.com was user generated but the rest are hardly bastions of reliable fact either. Mfield (talk) 05:00, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

February 17, 1982. DiverseMentality 05:01, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That definitely trumps the others on the reliable source front, well done. Mfield (talk) 05:09, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, thank you. Googling "[person and birth date]" usually comes up with a reliable source somewhere. I just wish Allmusic (my main source for birth dates) had it from the start to avoid these problems. DiverseMentality 05:18, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm just a Lupe Fiasco fan so I don't know how the protocol for this Wikipedia thing works but if you are a fan you know that his birthday is the 16th....He said so himself 2 days ago.... 2/18/09

The Yo! rap awards

[edit]

Don't meet the notability standard without a reliable third party source or mention. As it is, every time they have been added they are backed only with references from Yo!'s own site. They have not been covered or reported by any other media judging by Googling. I don't think they are notable enough for inclusion without some sort of reliable confirmation that they are trusted or respected. With every magazine in existence printing 'Top 10' lists and awards for this and that, more is needed than a self reference. Mfield (talk) 02:32, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

POV? / Cleaning Up Lead Section

[edit]

"Prominent hip hop mogul Jay-Z describes him as a "breath of fresh air" in a new hip hop world characterized by mainstream pop and glamour, a sharp contrast with the widespread lyricism-focused rap of the 1990s, and critics have called him the "Hip-Hop Generation's Next Vanguard.""

First off, the lead sentence describing Jay-Z as a "prominent hip-hip mogul" is giving him undue weight in an article not about Jay-Z. Readers can just go Jay-Z's page and learn about him, which is why his name is wikilinked. Second, following Jay's quote calling Lupe a breath of fresh air, I highlighted the following, because it is either the rest of Jay-Z's praise that did not continue to carry quotation marks, giving a reader the impression it is the article's author(s) giving their own opinion, or it really is an opinion added by an editor, which does not belong in an article. --Crackthewhip775 (talk) 04:14, 2 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That problematic passage was also copied-and-pasted from this press release and inappropriately referenced and linked, so I've removed it. We should find better and more authoritative sources for critical praise. I think Jay-Z called Lupe a "breath of fresh air" on Ed Lover's show, but I'm not sure. --Junius49 (talk) 17:45, 2 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

We don't need that third picture. It's already in the awards article.Osh33m (talk) 18:37, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There's no policy restricting the use of this picture. There are plenty of articles that use the same picture. Alicia Keys, Alicia Keys discography, list of awards and nominations received by Alicia Keys all use the same lead photo, as well as John Legend and list of awards and nominations received by John Legend. Saying it's "not needed" is your point of view, which should have been discussed first before removing the picture several times. — Σxplicit 18:41, 17 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
We don't need it because there are SO MANY pictures of him in the article, there's like 3 - if they don't help explain then we simply do not need them. You need to get rid of some of them in the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.121.129.97 (talk) 16:31, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Grammar issue

[edit]

Under 2009-present: Lasers, there is a grammar issue. The line "The track, entitled "Fire", is as Lupe stated, a taste of why he will take the number..." should be: "The track, entitled "Fire," is, as Lupe stated, a taste of why he will take the number..."

I changed the release date for Lasers to TBD as at the moment it seems as though the situation with the album has become extremely bleak. We got an "official single" for The Great American Rap Album before we got one from LASERS which suggests that The Great American Rap Album is going to be Lupe's third full length studio album. Keep in mind that as far as we know Food & Liquor 2: TGARA is not completed (as Lupe himself said he just mastered "Go To Sleep" a few days ago) it is far too early to post a set release date for either album. Official word from Lupe and/or someone at Atlantic is necessary before any further claims are made. (71.53.169.48 (talk) 07:12, 22 August 2010 (UTC))[reply]

Japanese Cartoon?

[edit]

Shouldn't there be something on this page concerning Lupe's side project, Japanese Cartoon? The only place I can find any information about it is on his Facebook page. 24.239.248.23 (talk) 17:45, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is an official Japanese cartoon wiki page now http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Cartoon_%28band%29 I don't know how to link it but would if I could as it would be helpful for those wanting more info on the band. Currently though there is not enough information available to start a subsection on this article to elaborate on Wasalu's involvement with the band, but there is a brief mention. What is this?

[edit]

This was a really long paragraph that I think is vandalism, but it's sourced...weird.

On October 21, 2010 MTV released an article on their website title “Dear Lupe Fiasco: 10 Tips To Make LASERS Successful”. The article consisted of content that could be considered degrading or slander toward Fiasco. The article said things like, “Lupe Fiasco did the impossible recently. He got a release date for LASERS!…There are plenty of things he needs to do if he wants Atlantic to give him the chance to release any more albums after this one.” The list’s tips consisted of: 1. Keep recording songs for LASERS 2. Call Kanye West, like, NOW 3. Drop a mixtape. Immediately. 4. Stop participating in supergroups 5. Repair your image on rap blogs 6. Embrace your leaked records 7. Be open to trying everything to land a hit single 8. Take cues from your labelmate B.o.B. 9. Appreciate your old fans—but try to find some new ones . 10. Keep rapping your ass off. Many of this tips also contained content that could be seen as slanderous or uncalled for, such as, “Do you really think Atlantic—or any other record label, for that matter—is going to put out an album by either of those two supergroups anytime soon? Yeah, we don't think so…We're not sure if you know this or not, but most of the rap blogs seem to hate you.” The article also contained content that could be seen as pushy by telling Lupe to sell out and get a hit single. The article reads, “You passed over on B.o.B's "Nothin' On You.”…be open to do anything you can to get that hit…Speaking of B.o.B, look no further than B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray to hear how you can make the album you want to and keep your label happy…Use that as your blueprint.” To some people this is telling Lupe to completely sell out and only do mainstream music because B.o.B’s last album, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray, was chastised by his fans for being to mainstream and poppy; some believe B.o.B sold out.[1] MTV then finished the interview but saying, “But you also need to branch out and realize that not everyone is happy with the way you've handled your label politics.”[2] Soon after the MTV article “Dear Lupe Fiasco: 10 Tips to Make LASERS Successful” released Lupe tweeted back these comments, “Oh snap…MTV (illuminati’s favorite network) back on the attack…why can’t y’all just chill out? Salacious banality @ the speed of light? I think I’ve been very good natured with you. I personally know several employees of your company. You guys know me as well. I’m confused. Where is the true music journalism??? where is Suchin?!! What happened? Where are the honest critiques of cultural expression? For it’s not about being RIGHT it’s about being HOT Fame over self-awareness and virtue Hedonism over self respect Celebrity over cerebral. A destroying force in our culture and society just like rest of the useless vapid spectacles that pour out of our tv’s and radios. What are we supposed to be learning from you? What is your point? Do you have a point beyond corporate sponsored distraction? Your a materialistic shell of your former self that can only identify with celebrity pageantry and instant gratification. Corporate garbage pushing plastic lifestyles and wasteful, destructive behavior into the brains of the youth of the world. So when your relevance thins in2 a whisper & the stock price collapses and you have 2 come 2 grips with the mess you made. I’ll be here 4 ya. We’ll be here. With hands full of baby powder 2 smack some sense back into your body & a warm shoulder to cry on. We want the REAL MTV back!”. One writer for ology.com responded by saying, “I can't blame the guy, because the article was a bit pushy, listing suggestions such as “Call Kanye West, like NOW," “Repair Your Image on Rap Blogs," and “Be Open to Everything to Land a Hit Single” -- essentially everything that you shouldn't tell an artist of Lupe's caliber, and everything we could expect from the despicable music network that MTV has become.”[3]

I am quite confused. Basilisk4u (talk) 03:57, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey sorry for the lengthy paragraph but I thought I would try to put it up. It was a part of a school project, and why did you take it down it's sourced and legitmate, I don't understand.

That's not vandalism, that actually HAPPENED. MTV tried to give Lupe some advice at a very bad time, so he took it the wrong way and went on a very long rant of MTV on his twitter that is several tweets long. The story has been covered on a lot of Hip-Hop sites and even MTV.com itself. THAT'S why it's sourced. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.18.209.31 (talk) 17:32, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Lupe Fiasco engagement:Fiance'

[edit]

It can be found online, that Lupe is engaged yet he does not talk about his private life or he says that he has a girlfriend. However on his official facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/help/?mail_sent#!/profile.php?id=526373373, we can clearly see he is engaged. The woman that he is engaged to, same woman from his Paris, Tokyo video, a Miss Marquita McCurry, who founded his LupeFiascoStore and often seen backstage on tour with him, and states that she is a medical esthetcian and aspiring jewler, this can be found on facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/help/?mail_sent#!/profile.php?id=100000326985546; it is rumored they have been together for 7 years or that they have been together since the beginning...of what I don't know?. I believe celebrities need to stop the charade and be honest about their relationship status but instead they make themselves appear "single" to a certain extent to keep the females "wishing...and dreaming" and interested; most men do not care. I'm sure if Lupe has dated this woman for this long that despite his claim to be a devout muslim, Im sure they have had intercourse over these 7yrs. I'm not hating on them, just dont like being lied to by celebs...and although he is suppose to be this deep, pro-black rapper and devout muslim, his fiance' is pretty much like a lighter version of Ciara and just as image n materialistic like all the females of today...I would of expected a natural or even muslim looking woman since he talks about it a lot. I think his relationship status should be added to the profile and you have the links for it.

Association with Kanye West?

[edit]

Has Lupe Fiasco ever associated with Kanye West? I know one single they have collaborated together, which is Touch the Sky, and since Lupe and Kanye are both in Child Rebel Soldier, wouldn't it make them both associated? --Bobjonespie (talk) 00:11, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request from Bobjonespie

[edit]

Can someone please change the main picture of Lupe Fiasco in his article? I mean, it's so old and outdated, and he looks nothing like that today. And what happened to that previous picture of him in 2008? At least that was more recent. And try finding a picture of him at least from 2010. --Bobjonespie (talk) 00:23, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Political viewsFiasco is known for his anti-establishment views. In an interview with Stephen Colbert on the satirical news show The Colbert Report, Fiasco stated his credo on political philosophy: "You should criticize power even if you agree with it."[70]

In another interview in June 2011 on the CBS program "What's Trending," Fiasco discussed the political content of his music and stated, "My fight against terrorism, to me, the biggest terrorist is Obama and the United States of America. I'm trying to fight the terrorism that's actually causing the other forms of terrorism. You know, the root cause of terrorism is the stuff the U.S. government allows to happen. The foreign policies that we have in place in different countries that inspire people to become terrorists."[71] Despite his strong political opinions, Fiasco said he does not vote in U.S. elections or involve himself in U.S. politics, which he called "meaningless."[70]

Don't you understand that it's dooms-millenium, people are just ontologically re-adjusting, or not, nobody wants to build the monorails over the freeways, the electric cars practically suck. The real genius's are working, there's not very many. The old genius's all wore out. It's like 7 billion people, and nothing one has thought of.. The question is should there be the do or cry scenerio where the men are alerted, and then more people will get to work.. or not some just like to watch TV. As the saying goes Life isn't Fair, Science isn't Fair, Physics, is, not, fair. Ford said only BLACK.. but people didn't listen... you know why, it gets hot while commuting and you're supposed to work. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.230.193.101 (talk) 05:07, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What does this even mean?

[edit]

"For his strong political views, Fiasco has been getting lots of heat in the media like, the Young Turks for sharing his "liberal" politics but yet stating that voting is "meaningless"; this sparked the anchors of the Young Turks to conclude his statements to be "stupid"."

Checking against GA criteria

[edit]
GA review (see here for what the criteria are, and here for what they are not)
  1. It is reasonably well written.
a (prose): b (MoS for lead, layout, word choice, fiction, and lists):
As an entrepreneur, Lupe is the CEO of 1st and 15th Entertainment. "chief executive officer (CEO)" should be spelt out.
His latest album, is a potentially dated dated statement, see WP:DATED
but his father still remained prevalent in his life. "an important part of his life" is better.
'"After school, my father would come and get us and take us out into the world—one day, we're listening to N.W.A, the next day we're listening to Ravi Shankar, the next day, he's teaching us how to shoot an AK-47, the next day, we're at karate class, the next day, we're in Chinatown...". Quotes should not contain wikilinks, see MOS:QUOTE
In sixth grade, he went to live with his father full-time in Harvey, Illinois. here sixth grade should be wikilinked, many English readers are not familiare with the US education system.
In 2001, Fiasco co-founded with Charles "Chilly" Patton 1st & 15th Entertainment (or "FNF", named after the traditional twice-monthly paycheck dates), Better would be "In 2001, Fiasco co-founded, with Charles "Chilly" Patton, 1st & 15th Entertainment (or "FNF", named after the traditional twice-monthly paycheck dates)," but it might be better recast to avoid an overly complex sentence.
Otherwise prose is good, sufficiently compliant with key elements of the manual of style
Poltical views, a summary should be in the lead, see WP:LEAD
OK, all of those points are addressed. Jezhotwells (talk) 12:09, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  2. It is factually accurate and verifiable.
a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
References appear to be RS, statements are adequately supported by citations, no evidence of OR.
  3. It is broad in its coverage.
    a (major aspects): b (focused):
Thorough coverage, no sign of trivia
  4. It follows the neutral point of view policy.
    Fair representation without bias:
    Neural POV
  5. It is stable.
    No edit wars, etc.:
    No edit warring
  6. It is illustrated by images, where possible and appropriate.
a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
Images are correctly licensed, with suitable captions.
  7. Overall:
    Pass/Fail:
On hold for seven days for above issues to be addressed. Jezhotwells (talk) 02:27, 13 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that this is now ready to go. I am happy to list this as a good article. Jezhotwells (talk) 12:09, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I am requesting two changes to this line: "Despite his strong political opinions, Fiasco does not vote in U.S. elections nor does he involve himself in U.S. politics as he believes they are 'meaningless.'" "Despite" should be changed to "In keeping with," given Fiasco's clearly stated anti-establishment views. Alternatively, the line might be changed to "In keeping with his anti-establishment views, Fiasco does not vote in U.S. elections..." Also, the quotes around "meaningless" should be removed: it's clear that he's not using the word ironically, nor is he referring to it.

As it stands, this sentence implies that Fiasco's views are contradictory, and seems editorial in putting quotes around "meaningless." There is some implication that his abstinence from voting is in some way wrong or odd. If the intent is to quote him verbatim, limiting the quote to a single word doesn't seem the best way to do it. An alternative fix might be to give the entire sentence in which he calls voting meaningless:

"No, I don't vote," he said. "I don’t get involved in politics. It's meaningless. If I'm going to say I stand behind this person and write on a piece of paper that says, 'Yeah, I stand for this person,' then I have to take responsibility for everything he does cause that's just who I am as a human being. So politicians aren't going to do that because I don't want you to bomb some village in the middle of nowhere." [2]
I've refactored your post so that the reference can be seen and linked it for ease of checking; online references in help requests should be bare urls or in simple [ ] 's. I've also put it back in chronologic order, so that it's clear it wasn't initially provided and ignored. Dru of Id (talk) 11:01, 17 June 2012 (UTC) [reply]
Done It's not a major change and source seems to check out. Edit also removes WP:POV.—cyberpower ChatOnline 22:23, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed removal of redundant publisher information

[edit]

A number of citations in this article unnecessarily include the publisher for periodicals and websites that have their own Wikipedia article. This information has no value to anyone wanting to check or track down references. For example, publisher=Washington Post Company for references to The Washington Post, or publisher=MLB Advanced Media for references to MLB.com, only make the article longer - significantly longer when repeated many times - without adding anything useful. Therefore I plan to upgrade the article's citations to remove all such redundant publisher info, bringing them into line with the recommended use of the cite template (see Template:Citation#Publisher). I'll also remove redundant 'location' parameters (e.g. work=New York Times|location=New York), as suggested by the template's usage guidelines. Please raise any questions here or on my talk page. Update on Lupe Fiasco including Anonymous threatening his record label in 2014

[edit]

I am merely going to copy and paste what the International Business Times said and als paste the link to the page. I feel that this information should definitely be in Lupe Fiasco's Wikipedia page and possibly also on the page for his latest album 'Tetsuo and Youth' because it is pretty big news. Anonymous definitely threatened the record label and whether or not that is the reason that the album was given a release date is open to debate but seems likely under the circumstances.

All of the following text is from this link, however there are other sources of information if you choose to look - http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/how-anonymous-forced-atlantic-records-release-lupe-fiascos-tetsuo-youth-album-1470270 ____

Atlantic Records and the rapper/record producer had been at loggerheads over the release of his new album, Tetsuo & Youth, with Atlantic saying they wouldn't release it until Fiasco produced a pop-friendly single.

This stand-off had led to the album effectively being shelved and failing to get an official release date.

On Wednesday {October 15th, 2014} however, the @TheAnonMessage Twitter account posted a series of tweets essentially threatening that if Atlantic Records didn't give the album an official release date in the next 24 hours, "we will launch a direct action against your website, your associates and your executives."

Less than a day later, the official Atlantic Records Twitter account announced that Lupe Fiasco's Tetsuo and Youth album would be released on 20 January, 2015.

While the timing of the announcement may have been a coincidence, it seems that Anonymous gave the record label the push it needed to announce a release date.

A statement from Anonymous however, seems to claim full responsibility for the announcement of a release date for the album:

24 hours ago we released a short Twitter ultimatum. We called upon record label Atlantic Records, responsible for releasing conscious rap artist Lupe Fiasco's long awaited Album. We demanded a statement from the label within 24 hours to release a date or we would unleash the complete and utter fury of our collective on their company and executives. 21 hours later they released a short Tweet citing the album and it's release date.

At this time it can be concluded that we have proved our point. We wish music that is educating the masses to keep being released. We will fight for that. Lupe Fiasco, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common and others are the moving force behind conscious rap. This is music we will fight for. _____

Record Label

[edit]

The article states that Lupe discontinued 1st & 15th Entertainment in 2009 while also saying that he is still the current chief executive officer. That being said, he's been labeling copyrights as "1st & 15th Productions, Inc" in liner notes ever since leaving Atlantic Records.[1][2] Lots of the information on the 1st & 15th Productions website is out of date, plus the name keeps switching between "Productions" and "Entertainment".[3]

Also, Lupe is apparently signed to Sony Music Australia now (which is where Guy Sebastian is) but it's hard to know for sure.[2][4][5] Wk7sn (talk) 08:54, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I must be missing something, but Lupe Fiasco is not transgender, so why is his categories stating women as well as male? I found a YouTube video (linked here) that features Lupe Fiasco teaching at MIT, assumingly in 2022. It is marked with a Creative Commons license, but I don’t know which license it is.
