[edit]

The article currently discusses the distinction between grains of paradise and this Brazilian chili with sentences like

(Today, various botanical and culinary writers continue to confuse malagueta chilis and melegueta pepper.)

As is clear from the cites at the OED entry on malagueta (which solely concerns the African pepper), that's simply completely mistaken. There is no distinction whatsoever between malagueta and melegueta: they're just variant spellings of the same exact word and have been applied continuously to the African plant as well as this one.

It would be useful to create separate terms but we can't just pretend that's already happened. It hasn't and this article should be rewritten with the understanding that "malagueta pepper" has always applied and continues to apply to the grains of paradise as well. — LlywelynII 15:31, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
