Scope

[edit]

If Celebes is not Malay, then how would you explain this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugis? How about ethnic Malays living in Indonesia - they're not Malays too? --203.15.122.35 02:00, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Be careful not to confuse the Malay ethnic group (of Sumatra, Malay peninsula and Borneo) with the concept of Malay race. (Caniago 03:46, 12 February 2007 (UTC))[reply]
When I created this website, I was just wondering whether the websites I see about Malays in Australia in general relates to the Malay concept in Malay Malaysians - as seen with Cape Malays and Malaysian Malays, the ancestry of the ethnic Malays they are mixed, only that their practice of both Malay culture and Islam unite the different ethnicities of the so-called "Malay World". However, I have no credible sources to prove such thing, except from what I see on the external Cocos Malay websites. Therefore, I better just concentrate on issues relating to all verifiable sources regarding ethnic Malays living in Australia - this would also avoid confusion and any possible bias statements. --Fantastic4boy 07:19, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Any cases where Javanese, Minang, Bugis, etc are mentioned as being Malays, they are refering to the Malays in the old collonial sense: ie. the Malay race. As mentioned in Malay race this misconception about who the Malays are is due to Raffles and the other English colonialists. (Caniago 10:57, 12 February 2007 (UTC))[reply]
This article should be renamed as Malaysian Australian, and encompass all Malaysians irrespective of ethnicity. There are about 57,000 Malaysian born Australians resident - far more than the entire population of the Cocos/Xmas Islands put together.Kransky (talk) 11:02, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Malaysian Australian" not a category

[edit]

According to the Australian census, no-one identified their ancestry as "Malaysian". 25, 323 were Malays, 669, 896 were Chinese and 8, 897 were Tamil.

This includes Tamils, Chinese and Malays whether they're Malaysian or not. (The Tamil numbers are probably an undercount, too, since most Tamil Australians are likely to identify their ethnicity as "Indian"). Saimdusan Talk|Contribs 21:55, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lists of names

[edit]

Lists of names in this article should be sourced in accordance with WP:BLP. As there is no way of constantly maintaining linked articles, this applies to names which have a Wikipedia article as well as those that do not. Any name listed with no verifiable citations should be removed. Refer to WP:NLIST for guidance. (talk) 13:16, 26 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Notable Malaysian Australians

[edit]

This list includes people who are claimed to be of "Malaysian descent" and "grew up in" Malaysia. This does not unambiguously make them "Malaysian Australian". In particular being of "Malaysian descent" may mean they were neither born or ever lived in Malaysia making a claim to be "Malaysian Australian" debatable. I propose that any listed person without quality sources showing they were born in Malaysia (such as a published direct interview) and do not clearly define themselves as Australian should be removed from the list.
