Errores históricos, Historical mistakes
[edit]"Bolívar" is full of errors, for sample, a paragraph - page 26 of the US edition - where we find more than six, as reflected in "The" Anglo-Saxon "look on the Hispanic world" (Cuadernos de Pensamiento Político nº65, enero 2020, FAES , No. 65):
Text: “At midnight on April 1, 1767, all Jesuit priests were expelled from Spanish America. Five thousand clerics, mostly born in America, went to the coast (...). King Carlos IV made it clear that he did not consider the teaching recommended for Americans: it would be better for Spain, and his subjects would be more docile, if the colonies were kept in ignorance ”(Arana, 2014)
"Actually, the Jesuits were expelled, not only the Jesuit priests. Arana wrong date, quantity and monarch (the pragmatic sanction of Carlos III was executed in Madrid at dawn from March 31 to April 1, but to the viceroyalty of Nueva Granada did not arrive until July 7; and the total number exceeded 5,000, but only 2,606 were from Spanish America), and offers a wild explanation about its expulsion from the Hispanic Monarchy. The reasons for Carlos III are still discussed but, of course, he did not do it to “keep the colonies in ignorance.” In fact, one of the texts that prepared the expulsion was a general collection of documents regarding the persecution that the Company's regulars raised against the Most Illustrious and Most Reverend Mr. Fray D. Bernardino de Cárdenas (1768), who described the quarrels of the first authority - a Creole bishop, La Paz - who expelled the Jesuits. Riconos, Arana could have read the varied regulations dictated by the Monarchy since the 16th century to promote the education of Americans - and not only of Spaniards like Bolívar -, so he could have known the work of Miguel de Muesas as governor of Puerto Rico (1769-1776), who in his General Directorate (1770) ordered the schooling of "whites, browns or free morenos"

Racism
[edit]The work "Silver, sword and stones" has been accused of promoting racism and hispanophobia, as well as lacking historical meaning: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/aug/24/silver-sword-and-stone-review-marie-arana-latin-america
