Hello, everybody. Mark Fischbach is a person worthy of a Wikipedia article, so let's try to make it a good one! Dagen Altana (talk) 14:56, 22 April 2014 (UTC)Dagen Altana

Move

I am the user that requested the successful move per WP:COMMONNAME. As Markiplier is more prevalent, and is actively used by the subject himself, and as required by WP:COMMONNAME, was moved to the more prevalent subject name. Thank you. See WP:SURNAME. Dwpaul Talk 05:11, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
Okay after reading that I see this: "People who are best known by a pseudonym should be subsequently referred to by their pseudonymous surnames, unless they do not include a recognizable surname in the pseudonym (e.g. Sting, Snoop Dogg, The Edge), in which case the whole pseudonym is used. For people well known by one-word names, nicknames or pseudonyms, but who often also use their legal names professionally (e.g. musician/actors André Benjamin, Jennifer Lopez; doctor/broadcaster Dr. Drew Pinsky), use the legal surname. Otherwise, their mononym is to be used (e.g. Aaliyah, Selena, Usher, and Madonna)." Which, to me, means he should be referred to as "Markiplier" in the article as that is the name he usually uses professionally and is well known for. 172.248.254.226 (talk) 05:24, 16 November 2014 (UTC)
If you care to change it throughout the article, you can probably justify it as you have done here. I question whether the subject's notability is anything approaching the mononymic examples given, who have truly earned the right to be referred to mononymically. And frankly, I think it will sound silly, especially when referring to his early life before there was a Markiplier, but what I think isn't particularly important. You asked why he is referred to as "Fischbach" rather than "Mark", and the policy I pointed out is the reason. Dwpaul Talk 05:34, 16 November 2014 (UTC)

Primary sources

The subject looks notable, but the majority of the content in the article is sourced only to primary sources. Wikipedia only covers aspects of a subject in proportion to those aspects' coverage in reliable secondary sources. Especially for a WP:BLP. As of now, the entire Career and Charity Work sections would need to be cut as producing a net promotional article, with no evidence any of it is due weight to include. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 12:45, 24 March 2015 (UTC)

A week later and no comments or improvements. I went ahead and removed most of the promotional material. Many of the sources are still primary and press releases. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 21:54, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
Looked up Google News on him to see if any news sources have any coverage, and I found one release by TWC (Turner Warner Cable) News here about his appearance at SXSW Gaming, and another here by the New York Daily News about his recent stint in the hospital. Would these be usable, d'you think? BlusterBlasterkablooie! 15:34, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
I don't see why not. The big issue is using primary sources like his own videos. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 16:55, 4 April 2015 (UTC)
Just did it now. If I gave some elements undue weight, feel free to make any necessary changes. BlusterBlasterkablooie! 17:34, 4 April 2015 (UTC)

Is the exact number of subscribers necessary?

I see there's an IP editor constantly changing the subscriber count in the lead to reflect some exact figure. Since the wording in the lead is "over X subscribers" and not needing a specific number, I don't see why we couldn't quote a more general figure like 7 million or 7.5 million and only changing it per 500,000 or million-subscriber change. I don't know if this is something specifically mandated by MOS, but it's certainly annoying to watch somebody going in every other day and splitting hairs over it when it's not that important of a detail. Should we be reverting, or...? BlusterBlasterkablooie! 19:36, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

We should probably do only major numbers, like a 100,000 changes or the like. I note that PewDiePie has done the 100,000 thing, saying 'over 34.8 million' subscribers. (Though WP:OSE...) In any case, I've changed it to reflect that just because I also think it's annoying to see and it's just in bad form. The exact number is trivial, it's the general quantity is important. Tutelary (talk) 19:52, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
We could also choose to rely only on secondary sources rather than copying from the ever-updating primary source. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 23:01, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
To be honest, it's not something really controversial like for example people's perceptions of him or his wealth or whatever. It's just his subscriber count, and the ultimate authority behind that is obviously Youtube. Even if secondary sources appeared for the information, it would be iffy because what if that source is 5 months old and cuts him off at a million or so? Wikipedia shouldn't have blatantly false information, and I think that if we did that, it would consistently be out of date (beyond the initial publishing date). Also, WP:PRIMARY seems to support this usage, in the least. A primary source may only be used on Wikipedia to make straightforward, descriptive statements of facts that can be verified by any educated person with access to the primary source but without further, specialized knowledge. Pretty sure a simple subscriber count qualifies. Though I'm not trying to be nitpicky, if the inaccurate information can be remedied some other way, I'm open to it, I'm only stating it's not a big possibility to have a consistently updated reliable source reporting on Markiplier's updated subscriber count. Tutelary (talk) 00:48, 3 April 2015 (UTC)
I've been reverting IPs who've been adding the precise number of subs he's got; I agree that the exact number isn't necessary. I'm personally in favor of updating a la PewDiePie at every 100,000. I'm also in favor of using YouTube as the source, since it's far less likely to be out of date. Sound good to everyone? NekoKatsun (talk) 18:36, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
EDIT: I boldly added a note to the page for any potential editors; I also updated the count since he's passed the 7.1 million mark. NekoKatsun (talk) 18:43, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
Edit: I would like to adjust the number of subscribers as accurately as possible. Integrity is key , and I am willing to do all the editing of subscriber count if needed. Thank you( Post from lordtuma) Added 04/7/2015 at 14:48 central time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lordtuma (talkcontribs) 19:48, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
So we're at four people favoring the rounded approach, and one favoring the exact number. Lordtuma, why do you feel that the exact number is necessary information, especially given that there is no way for any editor to keep pace with the number of subs he continues to gain? A specific number would always be inaccurate. I can't find anything in the MOS that specifically addresses this, though I did find Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information and Wikipedia is not Google - either one of which might be applied here. NekoKatsun (talk) 20:49, 7 April 2015 (UTC)
EDIT: I understand if it is preferred if the number is rounded. I will follow the suggestions and conform to rounding the number of subscribers. Thanks Lordtuma (talk) 21:12, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Web aliases =/= nicknames, no?

I personally think it's a little silly for us to be sticking anything other than "Mark" and "Markiplier" on the web alias section of the infobox. Warfstache is more of a running joke or persona he uses from time to time (though I concede that if you really stretch the definition, you could argue that it fits as a "web alias" per se), and "Markimoo" is just a nickname that I believe jacksepticeye or someone else gave him, that's not really what an alias is. I'm going to be bold and take them out; anyone who takes issue can take it to this section here. BlusterBlasterkablooie! 12:51, 14 April 2015 (UTC)

stuff

Markiplrr's bro (Thomas Jason Fischbach) is the creator of the webcomic TwoKinds. should we put this somewhere in the article?

At this point, we can only do that if an independent source like a news article mentions it as important. As cool of a guy Thomas probably is, he's not very well known, so it's not really salient to mention him in Mark's article if no outside sources have reported their relation. Hospitalization Section

First off, I'd like to start by saying that I understand that the Hospitalization section is completely legitimate and well-sourced. I have no problem with anything written in it. However, this event lasted for about four days. Mark's illness wasn't particularly serious and the operation was simple. Again, nothing wrong with that, but the fact that it's one of only three sections (four counting the overview) makes the article seem a bit bizarre and unprofessional. If this article had bigger, more important sections in it, the Hospitalization section wouldn't have such an unnecessary spotlight on it. Why then, is there nothing about Mark's charity efforts, for example? Here's an article that could very well be used to source a Charity section, which is far more important than a surgery that Mark himself said was "no big deal". I'm not saying this article absolutely needs to be fixed right now. I'm aware that it's a work in progress, and I'm not asking for the Hospitalization section to be removed or edited. I just felt that I should point out how much a simple anecdotal section stands out among three other, more necessary, biographical sections. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SebYB67 (talkcontribs) 00:07, 13 September 2015 (UTC)

@SebYB67:Main problem with saying much about the charity work the way you're suggesting is that Tubefilter's been determined to be unreliable in a discussion on Wikipedia's reliable sources noticeboard, as it was determined to be a blog with personal-opinion editorials and the like, so we can't use that for a source on that topic, at least not right away; maybe things with Tubefilter have changed since 2012, but you'd have to open a topic on it at RSN first to assess the consensus on it again.
The reason I put in that much about his hospitalization in comparison to anything else (mea culpa! mea culpa!)-- which also ties into the reason why there is so little else in this article-- is because it was actually covered in a third-party newspaper source, which thus far is the first time that's happened that I am aware of. Based on that logic, it merits inclusion, and more material will merit inclusion in the article once they have coverage in reliable, independent sources. The main problem is that we can only write what outside sources, that have been vetted as reliable, have written about when it comes to him, which is why this is such a small and unbalanced article still-- nobody's written much about him yet! Does that clear it up a little? BLUSTER⌉⌊BLASTER 18:05, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
@BlusterBlaster:I understand that the article can't rely on primary sources, and that it needs third-party sources (I was unaware that Tubefilter was determined as unreliable; my apologies), I just felt I should mention that to someone visiting the article to read up on him, it looks very incomplete (which it is! don't get me wrong) and that aesthetically, it would look better without the Hospitalization section (I would like to emphasize that I definitely do not think that it should be removed or even edited; it's perfectly well written).
TL;DR: I'm just giving you an outside, aesthetic viewpoint. Don't take what I'm saying as negative criticism of any kind.
Have a good day!
SebYB67 (talk) 14:56, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
I happen to agree with BlusterBlaster. Markiplier may be well known and notable in the Youtube circles, but in the world of Wikipedia, where notability and whether or not someone has their own article relies primarily on whether or not a subject receives detailed coverage from reliable sources, the hospitalization section is probably one of the main things that keeps this article from being deleted, because it seems to be the main thing sources are reporting on in detail. As such, its probably best to draw attention to that content. Sergecross73 msg me 14:22, 18 September 2015 (UTC)

Years In Which Mark Was Active

Due to Mark's recent hiatus, which has just ended. shouldn't it be noted as "2012–2015" and "2015-present"? --Wikieditor14 (talk) 19:59, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

@Wikieditor14: He's not "inactive", he's literally taking some time off to mourn a friend, let's not oversensationalize this. I'd only consider it informative or useful to make such a distinction if this hiatus continued into 2016 and thus it could go "2012-2015" and "2016-present". Moreover, no RS coverage on this particular event as far as I've found. ᴅʀᴀᴄᴏʟyᴄʜ - 12:56, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

Cyndago

I've been thinking about this, and I'm a little unsure about how much we should be talking about Cyndago on Mark's article. Seems like it might be at a risk of being coatracked if we're not careful, or worse, getting all newsfeedy about Daniel's death and Mark taking time off, which seems... insensitive, to say the least, especially since this just happened a few weeks ago. Thoughts? ᴅʀᴀᴄᴏʟyᴄʜ - 13:16, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

@Dracolych: I agree. I don't think it is possible, or reasonable, to add much more beyond what I wrote about Cyndago. I would be against adding about any activities of individual Cyndago members. I don't really think there is any need to write more about the suicide, or about the community response, in this article. The suicide is most relevant on the contexts of Markiplier having a break, and relating on the previous collaboration with Cyndago members. Ceosad (talk) 14:46, 29 September 2015 (UTC)

Charity Work

Mark has always attempted a monthly charity live stream in which he raises money for a particular charity, in total raising $906,718.14[1] as of 10/30/2015. This has always been a big emphasis of his, and I petition that a "Charity" section be added to his wiki page addressing his charity work, including examples of the charity he's supported in the past (Extra Life, AbleGamers, Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance, ect).

Jan 11 and 12 Hacks

Would it be a bad idea to maybe have a section about OurMine hacking his channel in 2016? I know this got a large reaction from many of his supporters, it may work for a section of his History.

I came here to see if anyone had said anything about it yet. In my opinion (which means nothing, I'm new to Wikipedia)it seems prudent to wait a little bit and see how this plays out. We have too little information about it, nothing is clear yet.Joshiewowa (talk) 03:14, 13 January 2016 (UTC)
Adding a section about the hacking is exactly what the hackers want as they would get the attention they crave, and is therefore the exact opposite of what should be done. Here is the section: Fischbach is known for his overactive style which causes him to yell, scream, curse and even cry during games. In his series, In his Five Nights At Freddy's, Amnesia: The Dark Descent and it's sequel, he is know for reacting to the slightest thing. Markiplier often subtitles his curses as 'duck' and 'itch' even though he does not censor his profanity. Ok. Thanks. Btw, could you read the article and tell me if its good or not? I want to hear from a reader's opinion76.174.35.70 (talk) 14:59, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

I didn't read the article itself, just looked at the sources. The sources are not sufficient for an article. Wikia is not a reliable source. YouTube is not a reliable source. ITunes is not a reliable source. Go fund me is not a reliable source. The sources left do not discuss Cyndago. They are of questionable reliability and are about Daniel Kyre. It is not ready to be an article. ~ GB fan 15:49, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

But the youtube sources are to videos by Cyndago themselves, the gofundme is Marks gofundme for daniel, and itunes is all 14 podcasts. Wikia, i got nothin.76.174.35.70 (talk) 19:10, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

None of those are reliable sources that are independent of the subject of the article. None of the sources discuss the subject of the article. They do not help establish notability of the subject. If you want the article to be published you need to find sources that are written by someone not associated with the subject of the article that actually discuss Cyndago. Until you do there is no way the article will be published. ~ GB fan 19:36, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

Let me get this straight: the sources are only to prove its notability, not just any random facts?76.174.35.70 (talk) 23:46, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

Sources are for both. To show a subject is notable there needs to be sources that are independent of the article subject that provide significant coverage of the subject. Facts in the article also need to be supported by sources. ~ GB fan 23:52, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

Ahhhhh. So I have facts that can be proven, but I still need to prove its notability?76.174.35.70 (talk) 13:45, 4 April 2017 (UTC)

Content dispute

Since the page is now fully protected, this gives us an opportunity to discuss what the issue is. In one of Mark's old livestreams, he asked for someone to vandalize this page in regards to his height. I, having met the subject at PAX East 2014, know that he is not 4'2", but is in fact 5'10", which BetaOne correctly identified in later edits. But is it really important to include this information? This is what my issue is with these edits.

@GB fan and Quinton Feldberg: as two other editors that have reverted Beta's edits, what is your say on this? jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk) 17:14, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

The article uses {{Infobox YouTube personality}}. The infobox documentation does not address when to use the height parameter but it is based off of {{Infobox person}} where the documentation does address the height parameter. That documentation says it should be used if the person is notable for their height, or if their height is relevant. In this case he isn't notable for his height and it isn't relevant. If reliable sources pick up and discuss his call to vandalize the article with an incorrect height that might be pertinent for the prose but it still wouldn't be needed in the infobox as he isn't notable for his height and it isn't relevant. On top of that there are no reliable sources for either his bogus 4'2" or the 5'10" number. There is no reason to include it in the article. ~ GB fan 17:37, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
That settles my issue. I've already sent a Talkback to Beta in regards to this discussion. Now we just wait for their response. Or not, depending on whether they want to wait until protection expires. jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk) 01:08, 2 August 2017 (UTC)

Time ago I asked to correct that he's not 178 cm (5'84") because is totally impossible (he and Jacksepticeye are tall almost the same so 5'10 looks the correct one) but was too controversial so they remove his height. Koala Wiki (talk) 17:09, 3 October 2017 (UTC)

Not the case. Please read carefully what GB fan said above: it is addressed in the documentation for Infobox person that height should only be included if it's notable; in this case, it's not. jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk) 17:11, 3 October 2017 (UTC)

Incorrect formulation

The phrase "He is known for branding his channel with a pink mustache (a reference to his alter ego, Wilford Warfstache) and has since dyed his hair pink, blue, and red." is actually incorrect because are not related. “Korean-American”

Hello,

A few days ago an editor changed the lede to say that Markiplier is a “Korean-American YouTuber.” The “Korean-“ prefix is incorrect - Mark was born in the United States which makes him simply “American.” Just because he has Korean ancestry doesn’t make him “Korean-American.” His relationship to Korea (via his mom) can be noted in a later section.

If we follow the hyphenation logic, he should be considered a “German-Korean-American YouTuber,” which makes no sense.

Thank you for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.194.145.66 (talk) 06:08, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

Unus Annus

Unus Annus was a joint YouTube channel created and run by Mark Fischbach and Ethan Nestor-Darling. The two did a variety of activities on the channel, uploading one episode per day, while steering clear of normal gaming videos they're known for. Ethan represented the "Unus", while Mark represented the "Annus" persona.

The channel was created on November 13, 2019 as a way of giving their viewers a once in a life time experience, free of, what they considered as, restrictive guidelines, with the end-goal being to remove all of its content off of YouTube after a one year run without any intent of preserving it, as well as discontinuing Unus Annus' merchandise, hence the channel's name, which translates to "one year" in Latin. This method aligned with Mark's idea of not everything being immortalized on the internet and that the most treasured experiences lie within those unique, fleeting moments, tying into Unus Annus' symbolic imagery of frailty and death, and their commonly used term "memento mori" (Latin expression for "remember that you have to die").

Fischbach also stated that he would be issuing copyright takedowns to any re-uploads of his deleted content without his permission. On November 13, 2020, after a twelve hour broadcast, Mark, Ethan and Amy deleted all of Unus Annus' social accounts and finished off the livestream by terminating the channel.

Channel Introduction

Ethan as "Unus" (left), and Mark as "Annus" (right)

On November 14, 2019, Mark and Ethan replaced their social accounts' profile pictures and banners with solid white and solid black images, respectively. The following day, both of them posted a channel specific version of "This Will End in One Year" video, addressing their audience in a monotone voice about the then-upcoming Unus Annus project. The two were dressed in suits; Mark in white portraying "Annus" and Ethan in black portraying "Unus," with each representing the aforementioned colors.

Both videos linked to Unus Annus' channel introductory video of the same name, in which Mark and Ethan described their plans to upload one episode per day onto the channel for a full year, before eventually removing all of its content from YouTube with no intention of preserving it, hence the channel's name, meaning "one year" in Latin. The only exceptions to the 'one episode per day' rule were Unus vs. Annus challenge where they uploaded two videos side by side in a single day and the Omegle video that was taken down by a third party via privacy claim. In addition, Fischbach also stated that they will be issuing copyright takedowns to all of Unus Annus' reuploaded material without their permission.

Layout Unus Annus' theme is centered around life and death, with its primary colors consisting of solid white and black, as a tie-in to the aforementioned symbolism. Its primary imagery featured an hourglass with a skull inside each cylinder, representing the incessant passage of time, as well as them etching towards the series' deletion date. The channel's slogan was "memento mori," a Latin phrase meaning "remember that you're going to die."

Each video's intro would start off with a slow rise of Mark and Ethan's distorted voices, chanting the channel's name in unison. Alongside its introduction and closing credits was a timer, overlaid across a black screen that counted down from 365 days and 12 hours, with each subsequent upload subtracting 24 hours off the clock to indicate the remaining lifespan of the channel. This same process would be applied to all of Unus Annus' future episodes, until their final upload and eventual deletion of the channel.

A number of videos would abruptly end, similarly to that of a suspense horror movie, with an exaggerated scene centered around the episode's theme, usually implying either Mark's or Ethan's demise. With the exception of a few videos, almost all of Unus Annus' thumbnails featured an Archimedean spiral pattern, either across its background or as part of the featured visual element. The song "Turncoat" by Michael Rothery was often used during their announcements and acts as the channel's unofficial theme.

Content The project, initially sharing multiple placeholder titles (such as "This many days left," "365," and "Annus Singulos"), had been in works for several months prior to its announcement. According to Mark and Ethan, Unus Annus was created with the intention of diverging from their mainstream content, as both of them felt burned out from making almost exclusively gaming-related videos for several years. In one video's post-credit scene, Mark and Ethan described Unus Annus as an opportunity to push themselves out of their comfort zones and experiment with more creative and unconventional content, something they wouldn't normally be able to get away with on their main channels, due to YouTube's strict, advertiser-friendly guidelines, monetization issues and age restrictions. Despite the two placing numerous Easter eggs across various episodes and their audience's enthusiasm for hidden secrets and plotlines, most of the channel's ideas were made up on the spot without an end goal in mind.

Although some people saw it as an absurd celebration of death, Mark commented that the actual purpose behind Unus Annus' theme was about learning and accepting the inevitability of one's own demise and making the most out of their limited time, as his general principle is that a person needs to give their life some kind of meaning in order to truly appreciate it. This also tied in with Fischbach's views on the frailty of digital media, as he stated that people have a false idea of everything being immortalized on the internet. Despite enjoying their time together, Mark expressed relief to be done with the project, noting that it ate up too much of their time, requiring at least three days per week to do, as well expressing issues with fatigue.

Between March 24, 2020 and June 16, 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, Mark and Ethan put their ongoing projects on hold in order to abide by California's mandatory lockdown and social distancing policies. Over the past few weeks, the two kept producing small-scale videos separately from one another, only interacting through voice chat and video calls. Nearly three months later, after confirming that all crewmembers tested negative for the virus, the Unus Annus team resumed their work around June, 2020, while making sure to follow the safety protocols by limiting their set to as little people as possible. Although the channel managed to recuperate and continue with their work, the production was notably downsized and several ideas were scrapped due to the ongoing epidemic at the time. Despite the setback, the two had no interest in prolonging the channel's lifecycle as they felt that it would diminish the meaning behind its initial creation.

Promotional image of Mark, Ethan and Amy on the set of their 12-hour finale livestream

Nearing the end of summer, the two held a nine-day mini-series called "Camp Unus Annus," which was themed around exaggerated camp-based activities. Their thumbnails often featured a distinct Camp Unus Annus logo.

Following the plot behind "The Truth of Unus Annus" episode, Mark and Ethan were supposedly taken over by their Unus and Annus personas, as they prepared for their final two weeks. The remaining twelve days were spent commemorating the channel's one year run with various side activities and send offs. In addition, Nestor and Fischbach updated their social media profiles to that of Unus and Annus respectively, swapping out their regular user names and icons with those of their alter-egos and stylizing their accounts' banners to the characters' respective colors; black for Ethan and white for Mark.

In "Accepting the Truth," Mark and Ethan announced a twelve-hour long livestream starting on Friday, November 13, 2020, at 12pm PT, which would serve as the channel's finale. During the broadcast, Nestor, Fischbach and Amy Nelson would replay and review their videos, interact and share various works with their fans, as well as interview their crewmembers and collaborators. Following the twelve-hour Mark, the trio wished their viewers one final goodbye before terminating the channel. According to Mark, the two planned for the series to end exactly on Friday the 13th, as the date itself is often associated with misfortune and various superstitious beliefs.

Characters Although the characters of Unus and Annus, portrayed by Ethan and Mark respectively, existed as their alter-egos from the channel's inception to its deletion, not much was done to establish the two as standalone figures and their presence has had little to no impact on most of the series' episodes, only being used as a catalyst for single segment plotlines. Their most notable features are the hand-tailored monochrome suits, black for Unus and white for Annus, aligning with the channel's dualistic symbolism of life and death.

In "We Made Every YouTuber Battle in the Hunger Games," Mark and Ethan jokingly noted that the two figures of Unus and Annus are separate entities from themselves.[2]

During Camp Unus Annus, while Mark sarcastically teaches Ethan how to start a fire, Nestor's Unus persona walks up to the front of the house and presses himself against the front window, as Mark begins to act maniacally, lunging himself at Ethan with a knife, before the scene cuts to another shot of them peacefully roasting marshmallows over the fireplace as if nothing had happened, implying that Unus' presence somehow caused the aforementioned event.

In "The Truth of Unus Annus," after finishing a shoot for another video, Mark and Ethan start to hear their own voices addressing each other over walkie-talkies, noting that their one year is almost at an end, asking them to accept the reality behind it. The scene then cuts to a shot of an Unus Annus-themed coffin, with Nestor and Fischbach approaching it from each side of the screen. Looking inside, a flash of light envelopes the two as Unus and Annus take their place and approach the screen, exclaiming "It's time to say goodbye," before the video cuts to black.

Running gags Del Monte Whole Kernel Corn - While attempting to make thick water from common household ingredients, Mark used Del Monte's canned corn as a substitute, which later became a running joke in Fischbach's community as his preferred beverage sponsor. As of "Del Monte is Dead to Me," Mark appears to no longer be interested in their products. Disclaimer song - While fastening a homemade bungee cord, Mark urged their audience to not replicate their stunt. Ethan then began to sing Fischbach's words back to him in a form of a short song, which was accompanied by a number of musical excerpts and minor visual edits, added in post-production by Lixian. Whenever the two would engage in any kind of dangerous activity, either Mark or Ethan would reference the aforementioned song, with slight alterations to its melody and lyrics. Eef - In several early episodes, Mark would use exaggerated abbreviations of his and Ethan's names, however, the joke itself became a running gag during the Hooked on Phonics episode, where Nestor, pretending to not know how to read for a skit, jokingly misspelled his name as "Eef." Mark's masochism - Throughout Unus Annus' run, Mark is seen forcing himself into unconventional situations, often to test his own limits, which later gave rise to the idea within their fanbase that Mark is a masochist. Fischbach has denied these claims on numerous occasions, noting that the reasons why he prefers to avoid comfort is due to his belief that a person stagnates over time if they fail to push themselves out of their comfort zone. Melon Man - In the final shot of "Crushing Watermelons Betwixt Our Mighty Thighs," Ethan is seen devouring his watermelon in a bestial manner. This behavior gave rise to the nickname "Melon Man" within their fanbase, who later build up the figure as a parody of conventional creepypasta characters. SCP-11325 - Late into Unus Annus' lifecycle, Mark and Ethan built an SCP mockup doll of one their early characters, which itself is a fictionalized version of Amy Nelson. The prop jokingly served as Amy's temporary stand-in while she was away, with Mark and Ethan addressing the puppet as if it was a real person. Challenges Throughout Unus Annus' run, Mark and Ethan issued various challenges to each other or to their viewers to participate alongside them. Whether the challenge succeed or not often depended on the channel's audience. Pending on the outcome, the two would either award their viewers or punish each other with an elaborate ritual of their choosing.

Challenge Known scrapped video ideas Throughout Unus Annus' lifespan, Mark and Ethan had several ideas that never came to fruition or were outright rejected, most of which existed merely as concepts that were seen as either being too obscene or too difficult to implement. All of the video titles listed below are conjectures, as no proper ones were ever given. In "All Our Video Ideas That Never Happened," Mark and Ethan reviewed and discussed most of their scrapped ideas.

Disputes With Popular Brands

Fischbach has made several videos about brands that are 'dead to him', usually after he has offered them undying support and love, and they have refused to sponsor his channel. Some of these brands include "Sour Patch Kids", "Takis", "Del Monte", among many others. As a result of this, Fischbach shifts his loyalties to other opposing brands, such as "Skittles", "Cry-Baby", "Dorito", and "Green Giant". 68.56.132.219 (talk) 22:36, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

(I've got sources in the bottom section) - Suggested reformat and chronology as well as added occupation of carpentry in 2008

Mark Edward Fischbach was born on June 28, 1989, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father Cliffton was a German American military officer who met his Korean mother Sunok Frank while stationed in South Korea. After Fischbach was born, the family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, but his parents divorced when he was young. Fischbach met Wade Barnes in sixth grade and roomed with Bob Muyskens in his freshman year—they would both become his long-term friends and collaborators.

Fischbach graduated from Milford High School in 2007 and worked as an apprentice carpenter in 2008, during this time, his father passed. A year later, he quit his job as a carpenter to pursue a biomedical engineering degree from the University of Cincinnati, and would quit two semesters away from completion to pursue YouTube full-time. Fischbach's maternal family history is explored in the 2022 documentary Markiplier from North Korea.

(Carpentry source: Unus Annus EP45 13:45-14:06 "Emotional Pain vs Physical Pain... Which is Worse?" 28 December 2019)

He was "two semesters away" from completing his university course in 2012 (page source #8), this would mean he was working as a carpenter before then and quit to pursue graduating from the university of cincinnati. The only struggles he lists with doing youtube full time are listed as school related. Doing school, Youtube and working a job at the same time does not seem realistic and the "thousands and thousands" of subscribers and views, and thinking of going full time during this time, alludes to the fact that he was making enough from youtube to not need a part-time or full-time job during school from 2010-2012 (The range given in the article). Getting his carpentry certificate would have taken at least one semester of trades university work (I've done it) and requires quite a lot of knowledge in the field, and especially considering that he was 19 in 2008, it is very very likely he did this work as an apprentice and not with a certificate. If he did not intend on pursing it as a career, this time investment would not make sense.

I can't do superscripts as normal in a talk page so they will need to be re-inserted. The new lines and their sources are as follows:

and worked as an apprentice carpenter in 2008, (see above carpentry source and explanation of why he must have been an apprentice)

A year later, he quit his job as a carpenter (page source number 8, explained above. Likely late 2009 but we aren't sure here so its just "a year later")

and would quit two semesters away from completion to pursue YouTube full-time (page source #8)

The original format didn't follow a chronological path down his life and "Fischbach's maternal family history is explored in the 2022 documentary Markiplier from North Korea." just kind of jumps out in the middle. I moved things around to make things more in line with when they happened and condensed events down to their time periods as well as explaining reasoning behind some of the more niche information. (Being an apprentice, and the year he would have had to have quit carpentry given our timeframe in source #8.)

If you don't want them included as they aren't expressly stated, simply replace "a year later, he quit his job as a carpenter to" with "He would later" and remove "apprentice". His work as a carpenter in 2008 is outright confirmed and the reformat is still requested. Veeyu22 (talk) 23:41, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
