Data that can be added to the article.[edit]

This article is biased in that it only presents the corporate/capitalist view of natural resources, i.e. - that they are there to be exploited. It does not present the view of, for example, many adivasis who desire to leave the minerals in the ground. This article also does not adequately discuss serious issues with mining in India such as environmental degradation, the large scale displacement of tribals, and the tendency for the Indian Government to support the corporate sector and not those who are living on the land that is to be exploited. Most of the profits go to private companies or leave the country while adivasis are often left destitute. 70.49.82.80 (talk) 04:18, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think there can be a section in this article on various public private organizations involved in the mining activity. I copied some text from the government site. Please remove once it is added to the article. This is all raw text.

The Ministry of Mines is responsible for the survey and exploration of all minerals( other than natural gas and petroleum). The Ministry of Mines has juridiction over Geological Survey of India and Indian Bureau of Mines, both of which are subordinate offices.

The GSI is the principal agency responsible for the assessment of geological and regional mineral resources of the country. GSI was established in 1851 and is one of India’s oldest investigative agencies in the field of earth sciences. Its areas of operation encompass scientific surveys and research, for locating mineral resources.

IBM is the principal government agency responsible for compiling exploration data and mineral maps and for providing access to the latest information is respect of mineral resources in the country. IBM has both regulatory as well as service functions. The geological services of IBM include survey and preparation of mine plans, preparation of geological plans, preliminary geological appraisal of mineral properties, including the formulation of an initial scheme of detailed exploration with estimate of cost and preliminary reconnaissance, quick survey to determinate potential areas out of large properties, etc.

IBM’s technical consultancy services include the preparation of techno-economic feasibility reports, evaluation of feasibility reports prepared by other consultants and organisations etc., production planning and grade control in working mines, evolution of flowcharts for mineral benefaction and agglomeration to scale up to large commercial plants and engineering design data for commercial plants. BM also performs regulatory functions, namely:- enforcement of Mines and Minerals (Regulation and Development) Act, Mineral Concession Rules, Mineral Conservation and Development Rules.

MECL is a public sector company, which undertakes detailed exploration of various minerals/ores by drilling, and exploratory mining. It is also engaged in proving the existence of reserves for their eventual exploitation. Exploration is taken up both on a promotional basis on behalf of the Government of India and on contractual basis for other agencies.

Sources

The IBM website also holds good information of identified mineral resources in India. GIS website needs to be explored more for information. --GPPande talk! 10:15, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I feel that the said suggestions are actionable. Your source has some information which was missing from D.R. Khullar and I frankly had vague ideas at best as to where to find some of that information. I had glanced through the Ministry website earlier but not in a detailed manner as you clearly have. As for accidents I'm sure we have a worse record than China, which has become a favorite target for many, and some information to highlight a few violations resulting in accidents needs to be put in. I will try and suggest a few things regarding text on mining safety soon.
Give me some time (possibly till tomorrow) to add a few sources to the sources that we already have. The raw citations can stay on the talk page as they are not being copied pasted to the main article body.

Nice to know you liked my suggestions. I am somewhat busy with one list article currently and would be able to contribute here more once I am done with it. I would try to find more information in meantime. I like working with fellow editors rather than solitary work. I would be around this page as I have added it to my watchlist. --GPPande talk! 18:39, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Someone has to take care of the images. I have been sincerely trying but its beyond my skills to place these artfully and stacking them is obviously not the solution since there are not enough images for a complete stack (it will end halfway). Other than that I think we have done the needful. JSR 0562 13:05, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removed one general image to solve things to some extent. JSR 0562 13:10, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
