It is self evident based on the surname, and a mention of ancestry can included if there is a reliable source elaborating on it. However, the opening paragraph should include one's nationality and not ethnicity in most cases unless it plays a major role in the subject's notability, which clearly is not the case here. Funplussmart, Sure, but I do believe the fact that'd be was Hispanic helps set some context; the job of the lead. If we're going to go by implications, the statement that he was from California says he's American; why then should we include American and not Hispanic? I do think that the fact he was Hispanic is an interesting fact; Wikipedia serves to inform and I believe that fact informs. Thanks, -- puddleglum2.016:09, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Puddleglum2.0, I'm just stating the accepted guidelines in the Manual of Style. I'm sure this guideline is in place to prevent undue weight from being placed onto one's ethnicity. Replacing "American" with "Hispanic" in the lead certainly places undue weight on the boy's ethnicity, especially because it has no other mention in the article. Our guidelines exist for a reason. funplussmart (talk) 16:15, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Funplussmart, I read the guideline again and I agree with you, if not with the guideline. We can keep the American; I see now that that's what MOS calls for. To be clear though; I do not agree with FightForWhatsRight; even if it was the correct information, the addition was for the wrong reasons; calling people racist, bigots, and bastards is no way to reason. Thanks for the discussion anyway, glad we could come to an agreement. -- puddleglum2.016:23, 21 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
