I felt the article needed a major clean-up. Here are some issues:

  • Birth date. There is conflicting information here. I don't know where Chilton or Yanow got the 1907 date, in view of Nappy's census and death records. If anybody can produce documentation from a "reliable source", be my guest!
  • Given name. Again there's conflicting information. See my footnotes. Unless the nickname Nappy referred to his hair style, I'm guessing it was given him in honor of Napoleon, Emperor of France, which was probably his family's ancestral homeland.
  • Johny Dodds in 1948. After looking at Chilton's bio, I guessed that whoever put that erroneous information into an earlier revision had somehow confused Johnny with another JD – Jimmy Dorsey.
  • Electric bass. Gimme a break! I doubt Nappy would ever have played the thing. If you can document his playing one at a gig, go for it!
  • Unreferenced. I've removed that tag from Nappy's page. The information in the article, even though it may in conflict with itself, all comes from what appear to be "reliable sources".
  • Stub class. His article now contains about as much information as is warranted for a player who was only a minor figure in jazz history, but I'll leave it up to you wiki experts to remove this tag. – DutchmanInDisguise (talk) 15:01, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Second thoughts

[edit]

I just came across an excellent article about Nappy, which includes an interview with his son. It definitely should be used for updating his wiki article. It'll be a few days before I have time to go to work on it. If anybody else wants to tackle this project, you're welcome to do so. – DutchmanInDisguise (talk) 15:38, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I finally found time to get back to Nappy's article. I've tried to draw on the Jazz Connection article without plagiarising it.

While studying that article, I learned that Nappy's nickname did indeed have something to do with his hair style and that he did play the electric bass, although how long he was forced to play it wasn't clear.

There are some wonderful pictures in the Jazz Connection article, which I hope that site, or Nappy's son, will permit Wikipedia to use.

I've removed the stub class tag from the article. Although we could expand on the article even more, I think it's already out of that category. – DutchmanInDisguise (talk) 18:01, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
