Need pic[edit]

Hi User:Gazoth can you please help to get a pic for Wani ? Does ADGPI (Indian Army) twitter pics fall into open license ? --DBigXray 22:49, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@DBigXray: No, images from Twitter are generally not considred to be usable as it is difficult to establish ownership of the image. You can use a non-free picture for now, until a free image becomes available, possibly through Indian Army's page of Ashok Chakra awardees in their website. —Gazoth (talk) 23:01, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There seems to be only three images of him being used in news articles everywhere and only one among them is after he joined the army. Every news article seems to attibute the picture to a different source, so a non-free image seems to be the only way to go here. —Gazoth (talk) 23:11, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
All right will go the non free way. Thanks for the quick response --DBigXray 23:19, 26 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Gazoth all I can find is a PTI image of Wani, for example this [1]. The upload page at wikipedia has this text. We will typically not use a file if its owner has a potential commercial interest in its use, and if our use of it would compete with its original market role. I am not sure if I should be uploading this pic, because i think PTI might be selling the pic. What do you think ? any better pic you can suggest ? --DBigXray 22:45, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Usually we shrink the image down to a low resolution image to show that the Wikipedia image is not a replacement for the original, but here the original image itself is in low resolution. I don't think there is any usable alternative. I haven't found any alternative picture, most news outlets have the same image in different crops. Even the Indian Army used the same image (with the background edited out) to place beside his casket. —Gazoth (talk) 23:04, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The Hindu PTI image, although low resolution, was so far the best looking. It has to be uploaded after a cropping at bust level. If wikipedia compresses it further, I dont know if anything usable will be left in that image. I think the Indian Army publishes these pics somewhere for example see Vikram Batra's pics. It is strange that in spite of GOI ODL we are finding ourselves struggling for a usable image of India's highest gallantry award winner. --DBigXray 23:39, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't look like there was any offical image of him taken by the Indian Army or any other government agency. MoD publishes details about Ashok Chakra awardees here, but lots of images are skipped. The Indian Army does so here, but the page hasn't been updated in over a year. —Gazoth (talk) 02:34, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Alright Gazoth, as discussed I have uploaded File:Nazir_Ahmad_Wani.jpg as Non Free. I would still request you and others to kindly keep an eye looking for a free image if possible. DYK can only use free image and not FAIRUSE. --DBigXray 21:05, 29 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also ping @Fitindia:, and @Sarvatra: to be on a lookout for a free image.--DBigXray 05:56, 2 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Found another more recent pics of Wani but the source of the images are not mentioned. --DBigXray 13:16, 3 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

List of terrorist commanders killed[edit]

According to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the six militants killed in the operation belonged to Hizbul Mujahideen and Lashkar-e-Taiba and were identified as[1][2]

  • Mushtaq Ahmad Mir, alias Hammad, district commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba for Shopian district
  • Mohammad Abass Bhatt of Cheki Mantribugh, Shopian
  • Umar Majeed Ganai, alias Maaz, alias Abu Hanzalla, of South Kulgam
  • Mohammad Waseem Wagay, alias Saifullah, of Amshipora, district commander of Hizbul Mujahideen for Shopian district
  • Khalid Farooq Malik, alias Rafi, of Aliyalpora, Shopian, the district commander of Hizbul Mujahideen for Kulgam district
  • One foreign militant from Pakistan.

The above content was removed by WBG stating "Sections, subsections and all that; No need for a list of terrorists killed in an operation that Wani partook in and got martyred. Too out of scope, IMO." and I have restored it. Reason is these are high profile terrorists, who are not independently notable to have their own articles but they have been covered in the reliable media to have a mention in the "operation Batagund". Operation Batagund at the moment does not have its own separate article, and it redirects to here. It is because of these reasons that I strongly believe we should keep the above content.--DBigXray 06:35, 17 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
