Bakic-Hayden published her ideas before Wolff?

[edit]

Bakic-Hayden published her ideas before Wolff. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.53.159.95 (talk) 23:09, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you are right. The source does say: Milica Bakić-Hayden built on Wolff's work, incorporating ideas from Edward Said's Orientalism. But taking in consideration that Larry Wolff published his work Inventing Eastern Europe in 1996. and Milica Bakic her work Nesting Orientalisms: The Case of Former Yugoslavia in 1995, the source is obviously wrong, or I did not interpret it well. Nevertheless, I will delete this wrong assertion. Thanks for the remark. I am sorry that DYK hook was/is wrong. --Antidiskriminator (talk) 16:42, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed, and checked again about the year of publishing of Wolff's work. It is 1994. One year before Bakic-Hayden's work about Nesting Orientalisms. So I returned the text to previous version. Do you have any link to prove different?--Antidiskriminator (talk) 17:30, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to take so long to get back to you. It is true that Bakic-Hayden's article 'Nesting orientalisms' is from 1995, and Wolff's book is from 1994, but Bakic-Hayden's idea is already developed to some extent in her 1992 article "Orientalist Variations on the Theme "Balkans": Symbolic Geography in Recent Yugoslav Cultural Politics" Slavic review, vol. 51, no. 1 (Spring 1992), 1-15. Thanks for your attention.109.148.164.79 (talk) 23:57, 26 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your efforts to make this article better. Is there online version of the article you mentioned?--Antidiskriminator (talk) 10:08, 27 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately it is not freely available online - however, it is on JSTOR - you might be able to access it via a public library. For a list of university libraries that hold this journal, please see www.worldcat.org 86.151.80.48 (talk) 20:25, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am afraid that I am not frequent visitor of public libraries. Are you able to present a quote from her 1992 work with a couple of sentences which prove that "Bakic-Hayden's idea is already developed to some extent in her 1992 article"?--Antidiskriminator (talk) 21:31, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest I would expect you to be able to access public libraries if you see fit to adjudicate on such matters. (Even remote access is possible in many countries). But yes, she speaks of a 'seemingly commonsense framework' operating 'within the boundaries of Yugoslavia' construing 'discourses of North and South' as representing a scale between civilization and barbarism' (Pages 2-3 of said article, co-authored with her husband Robert Hayden). 146.50.87.229 (talk) 10:36, 14 March 2012 (UTC) Further to previous, the term 'nesting orientalisms' is used on p. 4 of this article. 146.50.87.229 (talk) 10:37, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think that what you presented ('discourses of North and South' as representing a scale between civilization and barbarism') does not directly present this concept as "already developed to some extent". Still, I agree with what you hinted (that I am probably not "fit to adjudicate on such matters"). I will refrain from further editing of this article.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 16:14, 14 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
