History of Aquarium

[edit]

There seems to be an error in regards to the sentence about the first director. " Its first director was the respected fish expert, Dr. Tarleton Hoffman Bean (1895–1898)," unless he was director until 3 years of age this may need to be checked. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.44.136.104 (talk) 21:23, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Attempting to find other Directors of the New York Aquarium, doing research on the Aquarium in 1980. Found this article: http://www.sju.edu/admissions/scholarship/ruggieri.html Father George Ruggieri was once director. This article cites him as director of the Osborn Laboratories of Marine Sciences research facility: http://articles.philly.com/1987-12-03/news/26206797_1_george-ruggieri-pollution-medical-problems Need more info to add to the Wikipedia article. First mention I came across of Father Ruggieri is from here http://www.dinofish.com/bkchapt6.html

Book by a former director, 1925. THE GALAPAGOS TORTOISES: IN THEIR RELATION TO THE WHALING INDUSTRY - A STUDY OF OLD LOGBOOKS BY CHARLES HASKINS TOWNSEND, Director of the New York Aquarium. http://mysite.du.edu/~ttyler/ploughboy/townsendgaltort.htm

2002: The OCEAN Project – National Assessment of Ocean Awareness, Paul J. Boyle, Ph.D. Director, New York Aquarium http://www.oceancommission.gov/meetings/sep24_25_02/boyle_testimony.pdf

Presumably current: Jon Dohlin, Director, New York Aquarium.

Also there are some exhibits at the NY Aquarium that could be documented, such as Lupa, the last killer whale on exhibit in the NY Aquarium. http://www.freewebs.com/let_toki_go_free/hugotheorca.htm or Bertha, the oldest shark in captivity who died in 2008 http://wirednewyork.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2936&page=3

More on the Castle Clinton rendition of the NY Aquarium: http://www.nyc-architecture.com/LM/LM003-CASTLECLINTON.htm

Documenting my findings here in case others can corroborate and help document these as facts, or need the info for their research.
