Birth date redux
[edit]The article gives March 9, 1930, but the sources we cite in the "Early Life" section for his birth (that I'm able to check) say March 19 (I don't have Litweiler's book handy at the moment). However the NYT obituary (which we cite for his death) says March 9, 1930. Meanwhile the Handbook of Texas says March 19. In an earlier discussion (see talk archive), according to Litweiler, Ornette's sister gave March 9, 1931 (not 1930) as his birth date. Which date is correct, and how do we know it's correct? -- Gyrofrog (talk) 16:27, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
- Page 3 of the booklet insert with the original Artists House issue of Body Meta provides a discography indicating which are "unauthorized", some of which are surprising, and highlighting those recordings "most involved with writing and performing with sound. O.C." I've always taken that to indicate a subject oversight, and it starts by giving March 9, 1930 as his DoB. AllyD (talk) 16:53, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
- Hard to say. Almost all of the mainstream obits give 9 Mar 1930, as does Grove and the Wilson biog. The Financial Times goes for 19 Mar 1930, as do Feather & Gitler and Spellman (Four Jazz Lives). Some accounts of birthday celebrations indicate 9 rather than 19. This public record also gives 9 Mar 1930. I haven't seen anything suggesting 1931. Most likely scenario: Feather & Gitler or their publishers slipped in a "1"; it was the standard reference work for a while, so some will have copied from that. Unless his sister is the only one who's correct... EddieHugh (talk) 22:07, 16 March 2016 (UTC)
- Both Joachim Berendt (1976 UK editiion of "The Jazz Book") and Valerie Wilmer (1977 edition of "As Serious As Your Life") gave 19 March 1930 but there is a good chance as suggested above that they were following an earlier source such as the Spellman book in this. Improper reference format
[edit]Hello,
There is an improperly-formatted reference in the fifth paragraph under "Early Life." I attempted to fix it, but I am not too familiar with the templates yet, and I don't want to break anything. If anyone with experience with the format could help, I would appreciate it.
Matt.syl (talk) 22:02, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've fixed it. Someone had near-duplicated the citation, but omitted the first "<ref>", which is the required start of the formatting. EddieHugh (talk) 23:10, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
Violin playing called "violation" by Miles Davis
[edit]I remember reading or hearing that Miles Davis said that Ornette Coleman's violin playing was violation. Might someone have a source for that statement? If so, it could be added to the paragraph in which Miles Davis is quoted. John Link (talk) 22:07, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
