City, not district[edit]

This article must be about the city, but 95% of the info is in fact about the district (that has its own article separately).--88.19.49.50 (talk) 13:34, 27 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. We need to segregate the info and divide accordingly. Abhishek Pujari (talk) 05:24, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Maharashtra Government has officially renamed Osmanabad as Dharashiv Loleya7829 (talk) 04:54, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In Wikipedia, an article title is a natural-language word or expression that indicates the subject of the article; as such, the article title is usually the name of the person, or of the place, or of whatever else the topic of the article is. However, some topics have multiple names, and some names have multiple topics; this can lead to disagreement about which name should be used for a given article's title. Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it generally prefers the name that is most commonly used, as determined by its prevalence in a significant majority of independent, reliable English-language sources. See WP:COMMONNAME.-- Toddy1 (talk) 07:00, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The most commonly used name locally was infact Dharashiv. Administratively it was referred to as Osmanabad. The only difference now is that "Most commonly used" name "Dharashiv" has been officially accepted by the government. Hence the change needs to be done right from the title to the end of the article. We can mention the change of name as a sub topic for educational and information purposes. Abhishek Pujari (talk) 05:29, 3 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Disagree. The common name situation yet has not come to the fore, and following the precedent established by change from Allahabad to Prayagraj, at least a few years is needed to establish status of the name as common. Saadaman1234 (talk) 07:47, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to add Dharashiv District information Website Link in External Sources of this page. PritamSonone143 (talk) 11:42, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There is no need. There is already a link to the district website in the infobox. The link works correctly.-- Toddy1 (talk) 12:35, 30 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 3 July 2022[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. The result of the move request was: not moved. No prejudice against renominating if sources start using Dharashiv consistently in the future. (closed by non-admin page mover) Extraordinary Writ (talk) 20:57, 10 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

OsmanabadDharashiv – The name is officially changed by the government of Maharashtra recently. It is also an ancient name with a relatively secular and peaceful history than the last name. ShresthaShome.Ullas (talk) 18:31, 3 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. The decision was only published on 29 June 2022. It is far too soon to know whether the new name for Osmanabad will be generally used. For the present, most sources use Osmanabad (WP:COMMONNAME). Sources reporting the government decision to rename Osmanabad are not evidence that Dharashiv has become the commonly-used English-language name.-- Toddy1 (talk) 11:52, 5 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    • Support. Dharashiv is a very old name. Used by locals since always. Osmanabad was just official name. It is changed. And nobody opposed or found anything different. Osmanabad is not a very important city of India. Outsiders won't be impacted due to the name change. Osmanabad itself was not a very common or famous name/city that changing it will hurt anyone. Opposite can happen. If anybody searches for Dharashiv, they may not find it useful.

WP:COMMONNAME still dictates that Osmanabad remain the title. Just as the title of the article on Vienna is not Wien, the official name it has from the Austrian government. JavaHurricane 06:18, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

OsmanabadDharashiv – commonname is Dharashiv since ages Anubhavklal (talk) 11:06, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose: We are particularly talking about the urban area here, not the whole region and the official name change was very recent. Anyway,
  1. News sources: For a time period from when the name was changed (Feb 2023) to present (3 Jul 2023) we get 1,760 hits for "Osmanabad" in quotes and 1,010 for "Dharashiv" in quotes. Note that Dharashiv Caves are well known, so it is possible a good amount of links are referring the cave system instead of the new name of the city, while "Osmanabad" will largely refer to the city itself. If we do a search on "Dharadhiv city" we get only ONE hit, similarly using "Osmanabad city" we get much more 53 hits.
  2. Book sources: There are none in the time period for both the names, with or without "city". Using 20th century as the custom range, we have 74,800 hits for "Osmanabad" while 808 hits for "Dharashiv". Using 21st century as the time frame, we get 12,300 hits for "Osmanabad" while 678 hits for "Dharashiv".
Hence opposing per WP:COMMONNAME WP:NAMECHANGES. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 11:50, 3 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Common name trumps official name per the policy as can be since in Germany and many such high level articles. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 09:17, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose The common name is "Osmanabad". The search results and comments on them as presented by Fylindfotberserk are good evidence for that.-- Toddy1 (talk) 12:22, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Mattdaviesfsic: There have been back to back RMs few months back. I believe a bit more time is needed for the new one to become the common name in English media/sources worldwide. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 20:41, 29 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Change the name of place[edit]

Sir, osmanabad name is change with Dharashiv in all government offices. So you have change the name of osmanabad to Dharashiv. 2409:4081:D11:9865:0:0:88C8:3F0F (talk) 15:16, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia usually uses the name that is most commonly used in independent, reliable, English-language sources for places. This is not necessarily the "official" name. (See WP:COMMONNAME.) In the lead paragraph of an article we start off by using the article name, and then introduce other names. -- Toddy1 (talk) 15:20, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
