Displacement[edit]

According to this reference cited in the article, the displacement of the PSC is 33,000 long tons (34,000 t). This does not seem to be in line with the 460 feet (140.2 m) length and 88 feet (26.8 m) beam, as the resulting draught should be around 50 feet (15.2 m) which is unrealistically large. The United States Naval Institute New blog article confirms that the heavy PSC will have a full-load displacement of 33,000 long tons, and the USNI News is an authoritative source.Marcd30319 (talk) 21:25, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Heavy vs. Medium Icebreakers[edit]

The objective of the Polar Security Cutter program is to produce three "heavy" icebreakers with capabilities similar to the USCGC Polar Star (WAGB-10) and three "medium" icebreakers with capabilities similar to USCGC Healy (WAGB-20). Eventually, this article will need to be spun off into two separate articles. As far as I know, "Polar Security Cutter" refers specifically to the former heavy polar icebreaker. The future medium icebreaker may be called something else. Tupsumato (talk) 13:49, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

New Sources and pictures available[edit]

In looking around the Internet for more information on these ships, I found two recent references, both of which provide pictures.

The First is from VT Halter Marine, which has a page devoted entirely to this ship class. And since they have won the contract, I think that we can assume that the rendering shown is accurate:

The Second is from USNI News, and includes the report to Congress, which is a .pdf document. The latter (which opens up at the bottom of the article and can probably be downloaded directly) has very detailed pictures drawn into it, and it is also from this year. Furthermore, these pictures include drawings of the design below the waterline:

I suggest that these are pretty close to open source, and you could probably download a picture or two. In addition there may be more information there than we have at present. This would allow you to put more details into the 'Info Box' at the top, along with one of the renderings.

(By the bye, there is no page for the Polarstern II, however, there is a WIKI page for the original RV Polarstern, which does mention the follow-on ship at the bottom of the section: History. I suggest that you get rid of the dead link on this page. You might use the information you develop here to throw in some mention there, then throw-in a link back to this page. By the sound of it, there will be a 'Polarstern II' (as yet unnamed), and if estimates are accurate it will arrive at about the same time as the first USCG Polar Security Cutter comes down the ways. So the 'connection between the two ships with a common builder (across two different nations) is REAL!)

I also suggest that the WIKI page RV Polarstern be re-worked from one HUGE 'History' section, to one that starts with History, then deals with Operations, Retirement, Future Replacement, etc. The last section is where you can talk about and link to the Polar Security Cutter program. I would add that it is likely that the two ships are not exactly the same, so that would make for an interesting discussion as to: How and Why - in and of itself!
