Infobox length

There has been a fair amount of edits/reverts to the article's infobox recently. I took a look at it, in my opinion the length (as of this edit) is too long and the content goes into unnecessary detail. Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Infoboxes says that:

"When considering any aspect of infobox design, keep in mind the purpose of an infobox: to summarize key facts that appear in the article. The less information it contains, the more effectively it serves that purpose, allowing readers to identify key facts at a glance. Of necessity, some infoboxes contain more than just a few fields; however, wherever possible, present information in short form, and exclude any unnecessary content."

Every award? And every comedian he influenced? And all his influences? And all his genres?... Shearonink (talk) 04:33, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

I agree that the added information is far too excess for an infobox - which is meant to be at a glance. If there was an option to collapse that information, maybe inclusion would make sense. --MASEM (t) 05:39, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
Also agree. Too. Much. Stuff. -- WV 05:41, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
Agree with trimming or relocating part. I don't think we need "medium" or "genres" at all. I'd move "influences" to the body, unless they're already noted there. I'd remove the "influenced" totally which belongs in body with context. --Light show (talk) 07:23, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
Concur with the above; overkill for an infobox. Snuggums (talk / edits) 20:18, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Comment: As of this edit the infobox seems more appropriate, both in content and in length. Shearonink (talk) 21:08, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

Add in the cause of death section in the infobox Asphyxiation by suicide. 75.167.190.174 (talk) 00:21, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

I've changed this from "Asphyxiation" to simply "Suicide". The fact he took his own life (as opposed to being murdered, or dying in an accident) seems more salient than the mechanism of his death, and past discussions indicate a strong desire to keep the infobox brief. Thanks, Adrian J. Hunter(talkcontribs) 11:55, 1 July 2015 (UTC)

Cause of Death

Would suicide or hanging be more appropriate for cause of death? It seems like it would be more useful that asphyxiation, as that does not show how that happened. Just a suggestion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TurtleWatson (talkcontribs) 02:13, 20 June 2015 (UTC)

Article improvement to-do

MJ94 and I are going to try and improve the quality of this article. We would like to get it to Good Article, or Featured Article status. Other editors are invited to help us in this effort. The following is a to-do list. --ceradon (talkcontribs) 08:17, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

  • Rather than the subsections of the "Career" section be labelled topic-wise ("Stand up comedy", etc.), they should be labelled chronologically, as is done here, here and here.
  • The contents of the "Awards" section should be in a table, or just be a link to where that info can be seen.
  • "Filmography" should either be a table, or a link to Robin Williams filmography.
  • "Early life" section should ideally be on section, with no subsections.
  • Eliminate citations that are placed in the middle of sentences and not after commas, and put them at the end of the sentence.
I personally can't see any of those changes improving the article, and the examples of other actors aren't that similar. They were primarily actors, while Williams was a stand-up and actor at different overlapping periods during his career. And he acted in TV and movies at overlapping periods. Therefore adding years might actually complicate the sections, as they'd overlap and be lengthy. If you both were planning on interspersing his personal life and career as part of that chronology, I saw that done with Peter Sellers by some editors and I, and apparently others, felt it seriously degraded his article's readability.
The awards and filmography sections being put in a table would look a bit more organized, but in this case doesn't seem that much of an improvement, since both sections are chronological, simple to read now, and have hatnotes to the complete tables.
Since his early years include extensive details, unlike most entertainer bios, the sub-sections probably help readability, IMO.--Light show (talk) 16:21, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
We'll only intersperse personal details with details about his career when necessary. And the chronological set up is used quite often in other FAs and GAs. This is because it gives the reader a simple, logical flow of events. I think it would be profitable for our readers if we did that. If he did something in his stand-up career that relates or influenced his acting career, if the "Standup" and "Acting" sections are compartmentalized, readers will not have proper context. Finally, splitting it up in terms of time periods, rather than topic would help to reduce the size of the sections, not increase them.
Additionally, adding a table to the "Awards" and "Filmography section would also be simple to read, and would give readers more information than is currently given. As for the early years, you may be right, but I would like to at least try coalescing them to see if it would work, then if it gets too long, we will split it up. Thank you, --ceradon (talkcontribs) 16:43, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
FWIW, over the last year alone there have been thousands of edits made by over 50 different editors, and the article has remained fairly stable with no major disputes. As neither you nor MJ94 have ever made any edits to the article, it might appear disruptive to those editors who built the article to simply have two new editors remodel or reconstruct it to their preference. Certainly not without a reasonable period to receive previous editors' feedback. --Light show (talk) 17:08, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
Light show, thank you for voicing your concerns. Ceradon and I have made the decision to work on a different article at this time. Best, MJ94 (talk) 19:33, 12 July 2015 (UTC)

Robin Williams Films

I just watched Robin Williams in The Angriest Man in Brooklyn (2014) on Netflix. Please add this to his film credits as it may have been his last screen appearance. Thank you. 68.235.241.91 (talk) 20:46, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

If you look at his filmography, Angriest Man in Brooklyn is already there, and most definitely not his last screen appearance. Four other movies were released after that film. Absolutely Anything will be his last movie, but that's a voice-only role, so Boulevard would be his last on-screen performance
And as a general rule, I don't think a movie which was barely released in theaters and has a 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, belongs on his main page. He's not going to be in any way remembered for Angriest Man in Brooklyn. CleverTitania (talk) 21:08, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Original: On August 11, 2014, Williams committed suicide by hanging at his home in Paradise Cay, California.[8] Edited: On August 11, 2014, Williams took his own life by hanging at his home in Paradise Cay, California. [8] Suicide isn't a crime. Saying "committed" gives the connotation that it is but it hasn't been a crime for almost a century. As such a big figure in the public health community we need to have healthy talks about suicide and mental illness and by socially decriminalizing it we are changing the stigma surrounding it, hopefully taking the issue out of the closet. Paragraphs in tributes section

Hi. While some of my edits in the tributes section were reverted because they were unnecessary, I'm opening a discussion on the talk page. I have some concerns about some wordings that may need to be simplified in that section. Bipolarity

Was his manifestly manic depressive/bipolar personality ever documented? If not, why not? If so, why is it not mentioned here? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.168.17.209 (talk) 07:53, 25 August 2018 (UTC)

Plagiarism Accusations

How come this article makes no mention of accusations of Robin Williams stealing jokes, but Carlos Mencia's article has a whole section on it. This seems rather unfair.

Williams has been accused of stealing material by many comics and it seems to be common knowledge in the world of comedy. I was recently listening to a clip from the Opie and Anthony Show about the plagiarism of Carlos Mencia and everyone said that Robin was a well known plagiarist. I added a section on it because I felt it was worth noting. The evidence is still extremely thin, however. Robin William's joke thievery is something everyone in comedy seems to know about but no one ever has an specific examples of him doing or hard evidence of. It seems to be taken for granted.
He denied it in a PlayBoy interview back in 1992.[1] But finally did actually acknowledge the accusations and refered to it as "joke sampling" on an episode of WTF with Marc Maron suggesting he may have been taken others material.[2]
This is one of those issues which means little without some sort of comparison with other comedians. Are there any comedians who have never told someone else's joke? HiLo48 (talk) 00:55, 21 July 2018 (UTC)
There is more about plagiarism in the section on “hardships” than there is in the “plagiarism” section… Jock123 (talk) 10:30, 25 July 2018 (UTC)
This is an old discussion. Years ago, I added a section of plagiarism accusations with several interviews from other comedians, talk shows, podcasts, the playboy interview, etc. RW fans fought tooth and nail to have that section removed, which they did under the argument that none of those sources qualified as reputable sources and it was nothing but hearsay. My argument was that it was not the intent to prove Williams plagiarized material but that it had been mentioned numerous times by several comedians in countless forms of media that the accusations warranted mention. More important, I noted that several other stand up comedians, such as Dane Cook, Carlos Mencia, and Dennis Leary all had sections in their bio's which discussed plagiarism and none had as many first hand accounts of plagiarism as did Williams. I felt then, and still do, that there is a bias from Robin Williams fans. Unlike Cook, Mencia, and Leary, Williams is an Academy Award winning actor who is beloved and has a very loyal and passionate fan base. To this day, Leary, Cook, and Mencia have much larger sections discussion plagiarism and Williams' has two sentences, despite Williams' having more accusations for a longer period of time.Jmurdock21 (talk) 20:06, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Possible GA/FA push?

I'm thinking about taking this article to GA or FA status, using Phil Hartman and Katharine Hepburn, both FAs, as possible models. Eventually, if the Williams article does get promoted to Featured status, it can be featured as a TFA on either July 21 (the 68th anniversary of his birth) or August 11 (the 5th anniversary of his death). However, I think this article may need to have a look at some issues such as date formats and so forth. Also, one of my concerns on the article is that the biography and career sections might look a bit disjointed in different places; those may have to be organized chronologically by years.

All are welcome to assist in this process. If there are any additional thoughts or suggestions on what can be done to improve it, please post here. Thanks, Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 05:02, 17 August 2018 (UTC)

Took a quick look at this and did an initial copyedit on the early life section. I think you're right on the money when you say "the biography and career sections might look a bit disjointed in different places; those may have to be organized chronologically by years". Jumping from the early section into a scattershot summary of his standup career - then jumping from the 70s to his last years - is jarring. His life and career should be covered in chronological order for sure. Popcornduff (talk) 03:11, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
I think we can start with Early life and then in the career section, we should start with his beginnings in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s followed by his last years and death. As a note, we can merge the Legacy section with the tributes section as well, trim it down and rename it "Response and legacy", mirroring that of Phil Hartman's own article. We should also use Carrie Fisher's tribute section as a reference. We should also include his comedy style in a separate section. Lord Sjones23 (talk - contributions) 05:18, 5 September 2018 (UTC)
Yep, sounds good. Popcornduff (talk) 05:49, 5 September 2018 (UTC)

Infobox photo

At this revision Surtsicna changed the infobox pic to that shown on the left, below. The previous image (in the middle) was here since 2017-03-01; that was only a different angle and better smile than this one, placed on 2014-02-12 (on the right). I may have missed other short-lived changes in between.

I prefer the middle one. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 08:23, 1 December 2018 (UTC)

I do not feel strongly about it. I thought it would be better to have a photograph of him from his peak years. If, however, either of the 2017 images is chosen, we should remove the one taken the same day that appears later in the article. Surtsicna (talk) 08:59, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
@Surtsicna: Looking at commons:Category:Robin Williams, I don't really see anything that jumps out at me as a perfect portrait pic like the one that was there. The others that are reasonably representative, it turns out, are already in the article . I think the lower one with the Happy Feet character is different (and cute) enough to stay as well. Are there maybe any other sources of free pics that haven't made their way into Commons yet? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 12:23, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
While I do not mind using a different photo in the infobox than the one I inserted, I do think it is silly to have two photos of Williams taken on the same day, at the same event, in the same outfit. See MOS:IMAGERELEVANCE for more details. But yes, AlanM1, the internet is full of photographs that have the potential to become free. All you need to do is contact the copyright holder and ask her or him to release the photograph under a suitable license. I often send messages to FlickR users with this in mind. A photographer I recently encountered has happily released over a hundred high quality portraits. I suppose any site is okay as long as you can be certain who the author is and be able to contact him or her. Surtsicna (talk) 13:50, 4 December 2018 (UTC)
I looked at both Google and flickr for something suitable relevant to the film section or a better portrait for the infobox. Every one that I thought was at all interesting, we already have. Searching the non-free images would take some time, since you have to weed out all the non-starters (commercial news sources, etc.; right?), all the dups, etc.
Without putting too fine a point on it, I believe the previous infobox image is the best one we currently have. If you feel the lower image is duplicative, shouldn't that (less prominent) one be the one to be replaced? In the absence of consensus, shouldn't the photo that's been there for 21 months (only slightly different from the one that's been there nearly 5 years) remain? —[AlanM1(talk)]— 15:09, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

I've pinged WT:WikiProject Biography § Robin Williams pic for wider input. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 02:13, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

The middle one is the most agreeable picture. The bright, smiling expression better captures the essence of Williams than the neutral/slightly sleepy expression from 1996, especially for a person who is most widely know for comedy (people expect a glum, brooding Winston Churchill for instance, and should see a smiling Robin Williams). --Animalparty! (talk) 03:36, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
  • Middle picture – my preferred choice. It has a smile, his face is looking at the camera, and I can’t remember ever seeing him with a gotee or facial hair. Corky 04:08, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

I've reverted back to the status quo (the middle pic) until we find something better. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 12:08, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

Address

@Rms125a@hotmail.com: The address seems like too much detail, especially for the infobox, but I also don't see how it's encyclopedic, even in the body of the article. It doesn't seem to be routinely mentioned in on-topic sources (i.e. outside the real-estate records, background check sites, etc.). It's not in the Sky News article to which it's cited in the body (which has apparently moved), though a careful look at the pic suggests that the address is wrong, too. The discrepancy could be cleared up, but I don't think the residents need us to help invade their privacy any further, for no encyclopedic reason. I concur. All it is likely to do is increase the number of uninvited visitors to his former home. General Ization Talk 19:39, 20 January 2019 (UTC)
I also agree and should be OS'd - FlightTime Phone (open channel) 19:40, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

Done. Not sure if it qualifies for OS, since it's public info, but I removed it from the article. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 12:10, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

Please change mentions "committed suicide" to "died by suicide". Rachelberdan (talk) 15:24, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

Not done. Multiple discussions at WT:MOS have shown no consensus for making this wholesale change. –Deacon Vorbis (carbon • videos) 15:58, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

Discography

Overall, this article is very thorough and detailed. Thanks to all who've contributed. I was wondering, however, if we could get a Discography section added? I came here looking for a link to A Night at the Met and had to end up finding it under "Televised Live Performances". It could save other users time looking up information about this and his other discs. Thanks! FiggazWithAttitude (talk) 17:42, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

Agreed. Discogs lists 19 items under Robin Williams, including at least a half dozen albums. With all of the detail on his film roles, there is scarcely anything at all about his comedy albums. Shocking Blue (talk) 17:15, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks @Shocking Blue . Hope you're staying healthy. FiggazWithAttitude (talk) 16:32, 2 April 2020 (UTC)

Changes to lead reverted

I have reverted recent changes to the lead, while adding additional citations, for multiple reasons:

  1. Saying that Williams had "severe dementia with Lewy bodies" is incorrect, and not what the sources say. The terminology involved in the Lewy body diseases is complex.
  2. The autopsy used one term, Williams' widow used another, and later Lewy body disease experts confirmed what all the different terms mean; it is important to read all of the different sources linked in the body of the article.
  3. In a person with a career as extensive as Williams, it is undue to devote an entire paragraph to nuanced details of his death in the lead; the topic is better explored in the body, where nuance can be addressed.

Speculation and overquoting

I have removed this speculative and overquoted text, written the day after Williams’s death and typical of the kind of rampant speculation in the press before his Lewy body autopsy results. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:13, 27 October 2020 (UTC)

Adding Flubber

I was watching Ludwig on Twitch and they were browsing wikipedia. One of the articles they came across was Robin Williams and they couldn't find the film 'Flubber' anywhere on the page. 'Flubber' was the first film I ever watched which had Robin Williams in it, and I have admired his acting and comedy ever since. So I believe it is an influential film which should be included on his page. I tried to add it, but my edit was quickly removed due to the wording. I can try to rephrase so it gets on there, but I wasn't sure if there was another reason why it was not included. Are there any suggestions on the inclusion of 'Flubber' in this article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cnoized (talkcontribs) 03:14, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

Flubber is certainly one film I would have probably expected to see mentioned, but I can see that the article is written in such a way that it's not meant to contain a full list of all his movies. That is covered by the link to Robin Williams filmography in the Work section. Just to clarify the reason your edit was removed, you appear to have misused the word "rebuffed" in your addition. You should probably check its meaning in a dictionary. HiLo48 (talk) 03:59, 14 August 2020 (UTC)
You are definitely right. I had a completely different impression on the meaning of the word "rebuffed" in my addition. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I am glad to see there is a separate page for his filmography which has Flubber on it. I am used to finding it included in their main page as a section, but now that section just has a link. Is that a recent development for actors to have a separate filmography page? Cnoized (talk) 11:50, 9 October 2020 (UTC)
  • Apologies for intruding on this discussion. It depends on the actor. Those that have a long career have their filmographies put into a separate list to over making the main article too long or over-crowded. On the other hand, actors who do not have as many roles have their filmographies included as part of their main articles because it would not cause that kind of issue. I hope that clears things up.
