From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The article states that "His father gave Rufus the middle name of Cutler in honor of Lysander Cutler, one of his American Civil War colleagues in the Iron Brigade". But this seems unlikely because his paternal grandmother was Sarah Cutler, who was the granddaughter of Manasseh Cutler, who was very prominent. More details can be found in Dawes Gates Ancestral Lines by Mary Ferris. --Robert T. Sherman, Jr. P.S. I am Rufus Cutler Dawes's grandson
