Alcoholism

This article is quite interesting, but I’m slightly surprised it’s a featured article and on the front page. The lead makes great mention of his alcoholism and expulsion from the Jesuits. In fact, it’s one of the few things that make him more notable and more interesting than thousands of other a Jesuit priests. Yet, the article proper covers the whole of his drink problems and expulsion in less than two lines. I was educated by the Jesuits, so finding he was an alcoholic doesn’t strike me as particularly unusual, but being expelled from the order is very unusual. I can’t help feeling most of Mulledy’s story is missing or censored and we only have half a story here. Giano (talk) 18:17, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

The subject's notability derives from the fact that he was the president of a major university, not anything to do with alcoholism. As far as censorship goes, when I was researching this subject, I found his life to be just as well-documented as other prominent 19th-century Maryland Jesuits. In my own humble opinion, I would say that a claim that some part of his life was hidden from history is totally unfounded. Ergo Sum 18:55, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

• I’m not disputing his notability as president of a university, although that doesn’t make him exceptionally interesting. I am just questioning his expulsion from the Jesuit order. If they expelled every priest who over imbibed, there wouldn’t be many left. There will be a lot more to this than is documented in the article. Giano (talk) 19:21, 30 May 2020 (UTC)
