I have a completely different idea about this

[edit]

I thought a sewing circle was when the women of the village got together to sew blankets and so forth. I know my grandmother and other people of the town got together and made quilts. And when they got together they would most likely gossip about everything. And I assumed this was a sewing circle.

Also note that this phrase was used in Pulp Fiction, when Vincent told Wallace's wife about the foot massage, and she said "you guys are like a sewing circle when you get together." There were no lesbian connotations there.

I have no citations for this. But some simple Google searches back up my ideas. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/sewing+circle --Lindy (talk) 17:06, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pure Speculation

[edit]

This article is in serious need of attention. It is unsourced and full of speculation. Wikipedia strives to be properly referenced, and resists the temptation to print gossip as fact. This article fails on both accounts. I don't know anywhere near enough about the actresses listed to attempt a clean-up, but I do know many of their WP articles mentions nothing of alleged homosexuality/bisexuality. I agree. This article should be immediately deleted. It is the worst kind of defamation of dead celebrities. When oh when is Wikipedia going to clean up its act with regard to articles like this. CPayton (talk) 05:44, 7 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I also propose deletion. I think two separate articles should eventually be created, one regarding actual sewing circles, and another regarding the euphemism for lesbian relationships in early Hollywood. However the article as it sits now is an unsalvageable mess, and should be deleted. Philip72 (talk) 11:02, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Look at the German (and Spanish) versions of this page. The German cites the literature at the bottom of the page, but the article itself is without footnotes. What is written down there doesn't seem like pure speculation to me. Maybe someone can translate the german/spanish page into English, and apply footnotes where appropriate? 94.212.50.199 (talk) 01:25, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Material for a complete rewrite

[edit]

Good grief! What a horror show of a coatrack article this is, and the worst kind of unencyclopedic speculation and OR. At most the use of the term in the sense described in the current version of the article merits no more than one sentence. "Sewing circles" in the original (and primary meaning) of the term are a very important aspect of women's history, and widely covered in scholarly sources. I may be able to get around to expanding the article (and completely changing its direction) after June 11, but in the meantime, I'm posting proper sources here. Anyone who can, please start this process now.

  • The Sewing Circles of Herat by foreign correspondent, Christina Lamb takes it title from the chapter in which she visits a group of Afghan women living Taliban rule in the late 1990s who formed a group to study literature, but had to disguise it as a sewing circle. Description in The Guardian here
From the kind hearts of the women,
Came the first of "Sewing-Circles,"
That the germ of all the others.
Lo! from that, a small beginning,
Farther, wider, spread the circles,
Till they covered all the region,
Till each village has its circles,
Every cause its Sewing-Circles...

Parts of this article could be re-created in Lesbianism in early Hollywood

Regardless, what these ladies did in Hollywood is not the primary topic here, so I've stubbed it down to a mention and a redirect. If a article about lesbianism in hollywood is created, then the link can be sent to point there instead. --Obi-Wan Kenobi (talk) 20:55, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
