Nationality
[edit]I'd like to ask from all the users not to change Ninis' nationality. This kid was born from Greek immigrants. This means although he possess an Albanian passport, he has the Greek nationality (the past days the Greek government decided to give him a new Greek passport). See the cited sources BEFORE you decide to change something again. And if you decide to change something, please cite it first.--KaragouniS 23:53, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- Hm, he says he is Greek because of $$, but anyway.
Keep it Fake (talk) 10:51, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
Please change Northern Epirus to Southern Albania then. No such thing exists in modern maps. 151.202.92.127 03:30, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- In this link, the president of the Hellenic Football Federation (Vasilis Gagatsis) says about Ninis: When Albanian FA called him to play for them, Ninis rejected their offer and said that he wants to play for his country, meaning Greece because he was born, lives and plays football here. As a result, Ninis will be reffered as Greek from now on.--KaragouniS 13:07, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
- It makes perfect sense to refer to him as a Greek, since he self-identifies as a Greek. What's more, there's no question that he comes from a region of Albania which has a large Greek minority. However, calling that region Northern Epirus is not appropriate in an international encyclopedia. That term is closely associated with irredentist claims on the region. Wikipedia's policy is to use the historically appropriate names for places; when Ninis was born, it was clearly Albania, and not the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire, or Greece. If there are quotes of Ninis talking about his birthplace as "Northern Epirus", that is another matter -- it would be reporting on his own perspective on the matter. --Macrakis 23:07, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
Do you know that this guy hesitated but has finally chosen this nationality under his parents decision to have a better life.In fact,Greek people living in Albania are very small minority and they often refuse albanian nationality but he kept it.And his real name is Sotir Nini wich has albanian orthodox assonances.Because there are orthodoxe also in albania in case you don'know it.In the other hand there are around 700 000 ALBANIANS in Greece but around 400000 are autochtones.
- You have no right to alter a page just because you don't like what it says. Sotiris Ninis is an GREEK IMMIGRANT from northern epirus and you cannot change it. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and NOT a fan forum so please don't do the same thing again.--KaragouniS 21:06, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
Sotir Nini is an albanianboy.Greeks always agree to refer people like greek when they have talent and give a good image but when they are criminals they become Albanian. If he were greek Albanian would never be fan of this gyuy and would never be so attached to him.His blood is albanian and if the greece couldn't find talented player it is its problem. And i don't why you are so attached to an albanian player when we know that albanian peoplê are bad accepted in the greek society apart when they are great footballers with greek nationality. In conclusion Sotir Nini is ALBANIAN but greece is lucky that he has the double nationality and i will rechangee this article because I am from KOSOVA and I love my albanian nation.
- Ninis father said he is an GREEK IMMIGRANT, not me. Please stop playing with the page and find something else to do. --KaragouniS 18:26, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
People tells a lot of srupid lies for money!I don't play with this page,Ijust tell the truth and i will continue untill people will understand the reality.
- no you are not telling the truth. If you continue vandalizing pages, you will be banned from Wikipedia.--KaragouniS 21:17, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
So just tell me why don't you want me tio tell the truth, why do you use extremist therms like(Northern Epirius) and tell me who you are to ban me from wikipedia. You are the man vandalizing the page. And if you are so convinced that he has greek origins,do you agree to come with me and to ask this young boy about his origin.
- Well, I won't ban you (actually I can't do it and I never had such intentions) but you should know altering a page without adequate source IS CONSIDERER AS Vandalism and vandals are banned. So I'd like you to stop it or else I'll inform the administrators.--KaragouniS 21:41, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
Have you got adequate sources! And why do you use the therm "Northern Epirus"!I think you are like this racist greek soldiers who offensed albanian people. yYour sources are not unpartial so they cannot be considered.
Ok i had enough of you. I'll inform the admins.--KaragouniS 21:55, 28 March 2007 (UTC)
I have no interest in sports, so I don't know anything about this Ninis fellow's particular history. However, it is pretty clear to me that the term "Northern Epirus" is an irredentist term which is not used internationally and is offensive to Albania. Karagounis, you have got to stop. Secondly, content disputes are not considered vandalism. Editing pages without adequate sources is not a good thing, and it is always better to have good sources, however it is ludicrous to claim that it is vandalism. Karagounis, you should stop making silly threats. --Macrakis 01:16, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
Karagunis is the typical moron who didn't get a passing grade in history. That there are 1 million recent Albanian immigrants in Greece and millions of Arvanitas (native Albanians of Greece) this can be verified by reviewing the Library of Congress references of the CIA factbook. Sotir Nini is one of the dozens of pure ethnic Albanians of Albania who self-proclaim to be Greek for a better life. Like Pirro Dhima, Gjergji Kone, Elen Dhimuco, and the entire Greek national team of weightlifting. These guys have no connection to Greece, no ancestry, no language. They are Albanians who don't have self-respect. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.188.88.29 (talk) 04:05, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Mate,1st of all you are the person who doesn't know history.2nd there arern't millions of arvanites but only about 200000 people.3rd you talked about some athletes...Some of them are albanians like Kone,Dhimucho, panionios' Albi Konti,Mirella Maniani and Sava Lika etc BUT some of them like Ninis and Dimas are albanian citizens but also ethnic Greeks...193.92.148.194 (talk) 11:06, 1 November 2008 (UTC)
- There are those that can't hide their ethnicity for more money like Sabanis, but Pirro Dhima is not Greek, not is Sotir Nini. Sotir Nini even wondered where to play but then choose the money option. Himara less much much less hellenized Albanians than Devoll and Gjirokastra. As for Arvanites, now 200,000 speak the langauge but the blood is flowing in about 50% of "Greek" veins. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Keep it Fake (talk • contribs) 10:56, 17 June 2009 (UTC)

Page needs protection
[edit]Against Albanian nationalists who keep editing Ninis' ancestry to make them feel better about being Albanian. He is a Greek, of Greek ancestry born in Albania. That is as simple as it is. Reaper7 (talk) 15:14, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
you are right! during communism the albanian government doesn't allow greek people to immigrate to greece and force them to learn albanian language, now that time has gone! and those albanians who betrayed the christianity are among the poorest people living in europe! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 210.73.78.62 (talk) 01:58, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
- If you wish to request protection, please see WP:RfPP. This seems to be a content dispute, and should be resolved by discussion on the talk page to form a consensus. Battleground mentalities like that expressed by 210, however, are not acceptable. Intelligentsock 02:04, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm really adressing this message to the user who is protecting the page from modifying from other users. The references you have put below the article don't show that you've been based on facts to formulate the Background of the athlete. As we all know there are other athletes like "Panagiotis Kone" <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panagiotis_Kone> who has the both nationalities and has a descent description of his birthplace without ambiguities by even mentioning his original name. In his page you don't see any particular desagreement from either albanian or greek side. The "Epirus" word was a region State like in the old greece there were city-states which were unified after the hellenic state took place. At the time the Epirus got separated in 2, the northern one and the southern one. Both countries clame "UNOFFICIALLY" the part of this region and offically claim more rights for minorities in both sides. But, there is a prohibition on both states to call Epirus like Northern or southern (called "çameria" from the Albanians). The nationalist party "Xrisi Avgi" (Golden Dawn) even had a problem at the greek parliament evoking the name "Northern Epirus" concidered an insult to separate the region as a name by some others becaue it is prohibited by the hellenic and Albanian legislation to talk in the parliament about the 2 entities (or 2 epirus) to keep a good relationship between 2 neighbouring countries. On the side of albania they also have the AK party who has nationalist purposes and help developping of the nationalist feelings to the emmigrants, etc. I think that your description on the background make such a replica because there is a confusion caused by somebody like you unnecesarily. Coming back to the athlete, his parents, declared immigrants themselfs since they had crossed the border in an illegal way at the time where Albanian communism ended without claiming the greek nationality because they had greek origins. We are not discussing here why Ninis choosed to represent greece rather than albania or why didn't his parent get the greek passport before Ninis chose to play for greece, or even why both players (Ninis and Kone)went to Italy to play since Ninis saw the greek supporters singing "Albanian pig, you will never be greek" after he scored for greece and gave them the victory at that particular game... because this include economical involvment or fanatic stupidity and not biographical facts, but you're obviously mixing them up by putting in his datas "Himara, Albania" and provocking (for many who disclaim this article) unnecessarly by putting in his background "Northern Epirus". This is an article about an athlete and not about the history of any of both countries. He has chosen now to play for greece and even if he himself would like to play for albania it will be impossible. THis shows that those who see your article abusive are not expecting Ninis to play for them anymore. They are just living the actual facts that Epirus existed at a certain time and now is 2 other countries existing in which you have to subscribe and register to represent each of them as a player. I don't know if in an american football player we should see in the background that he comes from Louisiana who was french or from the caribbeans which means he is an african. The best example is the football player Deco <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deco>, who was born in Brazil, raised and formated there as a player and played for Portugal. In his wikipedia profile you don't see that actually his ancesters were portuguese who emigrated to brazil and so on... because this cannot be part of a profile data people need to see when they look for a profile but in more specific pages about the person, even linked with his orgines shows more. I hope you understood my point. See you.

I want to fill a request for editing a part of Sotiris Ninis article in the section of Background, in the specific part:- Ninis was born to ethnic Greek parents[3] in Himara, Northern Epirus (southern Albania).[3][4]. I see it as bad formulated and with term errors . I dont have information about Sotiris family and dont want an edit at they parents ethnicity , but the place he was born, Himara is a city in southern Albania but it does not belong in any other territorial division knows as Northen Epirus in this present days or even in the time Ninis was born. North Epirus is a term used to refer to those parts of the historical region of Epirus, in the western Balkans, that are part of the modern Albania.[1] . So as it is a term of historical region way before the Ninis was born , I think it has no connection to be written in this article. The article is for a modern day football player and the involving of that term in that part of article is wrong and is a confusion for readers. The right sentences should be :- Ninis was born to ethnic Greek parents[3] in Himara, southern Albania.[3][4]— Preceding unsigned comment added by Limitialb (talk • contribs) 05:18, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
