Water Polo State Titles[edit]

The current set up lists top-4 finishes for the school in IHSA State Series. For sports (like water polo) that had state titles prior to the IHSA sponsoring a state championship, this must be listed separately, and must have a proper reliable source supporting it, per wikipedia's verifiability policy. Best of luck and happy editing! LonelyBeacon (talk) 01:42, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notable alumni[edit]

Before adding or re-adding any people to this list. Please consult:

In short: alumni should not be listed unless they meet Wikipedia's notability guideline. That is, they are the subject of an article, or are eligible for an article. Note: local business people generally are not notable. Further, these alumni should not be listed unless there is a third part reliable source that confirms they attended the school. Comments on addition of non-notable alumni[edit]

An anon editor has been repeatedly adding an alum to the list of notable alumni. The individual alum is not only a red link, but pretty clearly does not meet WP:GNG. Per the Schools Project Guideline on alumni, alumni should only be listed if they meet the general notability guideline. This guideline is an extension of the guidelines on lists of people which states that lists of people should generally be restricted to people who meet the notability requirement.

Further, all alumni require a reliable source to confirm that they not only exist, but were in fact alumni. No such reference has ever been offered. What has been offered is a link to a business website that does not even mention the alum in question, let alone that they attended the school. As far as I am concerned, this reeks of WP:NOT#ADVERTISING.

I would like any editor to comment on this issue below, whether in support of or against inclusion of this alum. LonelyBeacon (talk) 22:41, 1 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support LonelyBeacon. It's essential to include only notable men, because without that rule anyone can add himself and his friends and relations and the page will just be clogged with unencyclopedic trivia. By the way, I found three you were missing. Moonraker (talk) 02:46, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support LonelyBeacon: The point of these notable people lists is to connect articles that have something in common that wouldn't otherwise be connected. Too often, editors believe that notable means "successful" and include lots of alumni who have been successful in life, but not necessarily notable as defined on Wikipedia. And just because reliable sources can be obtained on an individual does not automatically confer notability; those sources merely confirm the person's existence. An important thing to understand too is that school articles are not property of the school; they are Wikipedia articles about the school, so someone being notable locally or a "staple to the community" is pretty irrelevant for the article here since it's not geared towards the audience of just that community. In this case, said alum does not meet the threshold of notability and thus should not be mentioned in the notable alumni list. --JonRidinger (talk) 15:18, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Issues with recent additions[edit]

Here are the issues I have with TheDonsAreTrash recent edits.

1. Claims stating the school is the oldest...are sourced to the school which is not a Reliable Source

2. The third paragraph under history is entirely unsourced.

3. How promotional can we get with "academics at St. Patrick are very diverse and strong" this is Peacock and promotional. The rest of that paragraph and the next are more suitable for the school's website and look at that it is sourced to the schools website.

4. "Program for Advanced College Credit" section is completely promotional and is more suitable for the school's website, and again look at what it is referenced to. 5. "Drug Testing Program" again wikipedia is not a webhost, and again this is referenced to the schools website.

6. "Known through Chicago and Illinois as an iconic"...how much more peacock can you get.

7. It was "shocking win" - not encylopedic

8. "Prestigious" is most often a peacock

9. The rest of the sports section the way the it is in this edit is not encylopedic, this includes the soccer section which is also unsourced.

10. The addition of to "Notable" alumni who are not notable according to Wikipedia guidelines. I have suggested the editor write the articles first and submit to determine if these individuals are notable enough to be included in Wikipedia.

This article should be reverted back to the best historical version that is not promotional. Thank you --VVikingTalkEdits 13:44, 4 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
