Shakira statue → Statue of Shakira – Per WP:VAMOS, which says: "For portrait sculptures of individuals in public places the forms "Statue of Fred Foo", "Equestrian statue of Fred Foo" or "Bust of Fred Foo" are recommended, unless a form such as "Fred Foo Memorial" or "Monument to Fred Foo" is the WP:COMMONNAME. If further disambiguation is needed, because there is more than one sculpture of the same person with an article, then disambiguation by location rather than the sculptor is usually better. This may be done as either "Statue of Fred Foo (Chicago)" (typically preferred for North America) or "Statue of Fred Foo, Glasgow" (typically preferred elsewhere). If the sculpture has a distinct common name, like the Bronze Horseman, that should be used." I should note, Statue of Shakira currently redirects to Cultural impact of Shakira. Strong Oppose, this is not a portrait statue focusing on the face or even the face and shoulders, it is a full-action statue portraying Shakira as in her music video for her song "Hips Don't Lie". Have the support commenters seen the images of the statue? If not please have a look to ascertain if this is a portrait or an action statue. Riddle me this. Why are statues the only creative works that are moved from the name given them by the creator? Paintings, plays, film, books (fiction, non-fiction, and collections), songs and albums. These and many more are titled on Wikipedia by the names their painter, playwright, studio, authors (novelists, biographers, and agreed-upon title from the publisher), songwriters and performers gave them. Except for sculptures. And sculptors. This is a serious question. And why are so many editors determined to do that. The styling on this one, aside from my rant, should probably be Shakira (statue) instead of leaving 'statue' as part of the proper name title. Randy Kryn (talk) 02:43, 10 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
While this request could probably have just been closed, instead I tried to find any evidence that the sculptors had given any particular title to this work. I didn't come up with anything, including in articles that interviewed the primary sculptor. For that matter, I don't believe the common name is "Shakira"; anyone hearing that name without "statue of" would not know the statue was what being referred to. Very simply, WP:COMMONNAME and WP:NATURAL. Nobody says "I saw John Smith", because that would clearly be a ridiculous thing to say in this context. They say "I saw the statue (or portrait, or whatever, because it's actually not just statues this applies to but any depiction of a real human being) of John Smith". Almost certainly, one would say "I saw Michelangelo's David (or Moses)", but yes, that's how we'd describe the films. That's just how the English language works! One size does not fit all. There are many pages of, for example, statues of George Washington entitled George Washington followed by the name of the painter or sculptor. And looking through the news stories, I see lots of "a [statue/sculpture] of Shakira" rather than things like "Shakira" or "the statue Shakira", so I don't know why that would be the common name.
