Hall of Justice inspiration[edit]

Cartoon Network lampoon[edit]

"At one point, Cartoon Network produced three commercials lampooning the Super Friends..."

It actually created a few other as well.

One involved the Wonder Twin Zan seeing Marvin in a video rental store, and trying to avoid them, moving down into the adult section, and him seeing him and going down there, making a few jokes, and pointing out he didn't blame him for getting them thrown off the team.

There was also an absolutely halarious one where the Wonder Twins are called to rescue a kid in a cave from a bear. They fail miserably, then at the funeral, the old woman who was the dead kid's mother smacks them both in the face, and then the monkey too, chewing them out for their stupidity.

Additional trivia, they had a parody of them on South Park, making fun of Aquaman, or Sea-man as they called him.

In fact, they've been parodied on a vast number of shows. Robot Chicken on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim line up makes fun of them all the time.

Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law had an episode with Apache Chief in it, spilling coffee on his manhood, and filing a lawsuit. It showed Black Vulcan complaining about the "black" part of his name, wishing to be called something else instead but stuck with that do to racist stupidity. In addition Wonder Woman was shown with Zen as her bathwater. Funny episode.

Thought I mentioned it if anyone wanted to update the trivia section.

Why did it die?[edit]

I never saw the '80s episodes, but I was wondering if its cancelation had anything to do with "Crisis on Infinite Earths." That saga wrapped up in 1986. That was also the year the "Super Powers" toyline ceased, which was clearly based on a composite of the comics and the cartoons.

Various comments on how ridiculous it was[edit]

They do have a lot of rediculous plotlines.

In one episode, Grog had taken control over the minds of the gorillas of gorilla city, and they used a weapon to eliminate the powers of the super friends. This included Batman and Robin, who have no super powers, they saying oh no, their utility belts no longer worked. Without their powers they seemed helpless, but fortunately Apache Chief stated "we still have my Indian tracking skills" and they got away. I think if someone found a clip of this and linked to it, it'd demonstrate just how rediculous the show is. Lot of racial stereotypes, as well as idiotic plotlines that made no sense whatsoever.

In one episode Apache Chief grew larger than the earth, to fight a monster who put Earth in a pouch, to use as a marble, in his marble collection. Dream Focus 05:21, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Twang, shmang[edit]

"El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera"

The twang from Santana of the Dead's guitar is the exact same sound used in many episodes of Super Friends, which was often used in poor context for things banging into walls, etc."

Uh, yeah, that "twang" sound effect was and is used in many cartoons, before and after the SFs. It was El Kabong's guitar noise, Shaggy and Scooby ran into masked swindlers with it, etc. Yeesh!

Violence[edit]

The article sort of implies that there's less violence than in most superhero shows, but I have read that there was actually no fist fighting in the entire series. If anybody can cite a source or verify this then it oughta be in the article. Tempshill (talk) 04:08, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know this comment is over 2 years old, but leaving it sitting here leaves the wrong impression. Especially since it's so easy to answer. The answer is 'No. That shouldn't be mentioned.' The reason why is because that's independent research. Sure, it may seem obvious to you, and it makes sense to me, but, without an authority backing up that claim, it isn't a fact, it's speculation. If, however, you can find a person who's considered an 'expert' in this field who's written something on the subject of the Super Friends pulling a lot of their thematic material from Scooby Doo, then, sure, we can use that.

  • The fact that Superman, Batman, etc. were in both the Justice League comics and the Super Friends show isn't a rip off - it's a different representation of the same licensed characters.
  • The Black Vulcan article states "Unlike most of the Super Friends, Black Vulcan was not a pre-existing DC Comics character. This is particularly notable since DC Comics' roster did include an African American superhero with electricity-based powers, Black Lightning, who could not be used on the show due to disputes between DC and Black Lightning's creator Tony Isabella." but the reference is now a dead link. This may also be mentioned on a Super Friends DVD extra featurette, but I don't own the DVD to check.

Super Friends Canceled After the First Season[edit]

Superman 1988?[edit]

I dispute that this is a "spin off" or has any connection to Super Friends (beyond both having a version of Superman as a character anyway). For starters, it was produced by a different company, which alone should disqualify it. Furthermore, it was based mainly on the Post-Crisis incarnation of Superman, which didn't even exist yet during the Super Friends era which used a Pre-Crisis, maybe even Silver Age version of the character.

If this counts as a spin off, than so should any cartoon based on a DC character, such as Batman the Animated Series, which would be silly.98.243.94.83 (talk) 20:32, 9 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
