dvd release[edit]

i actually bought the dvd set in Australia in November 2008 and it has a 2002 copyright so the release has to be earlier than june 2, 2009. 07:32, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

"Prank" section[edit]

I've moved the section titles Linguistic prank here. It reads:

In the episode Speaking Proper, Bragg discusses the futility of efforts to standardise English pronunciation, such as Sheridan's attempt to educate the populace 'in the proper pronunciation of words'. These all prove to no avail, which Bragg illustrates himself by sounding the word pronunciation several times as 'pronounciation', no doubt as a satiric mispronunciation.

Cam we varify this? Many people do pronounce "pronunciation" mistakenly like that. Do we know beyond a reasonable doubt that this was intended? I don't know because I haven't seen the episode. So if anyone has, your input would be appreciated. ArdClose (talk) 22:52, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Riffraff - bogus derivation[edit]

"Rednecks couldn't afford steamboat fare, they travelled the water on rafts, using paddles called riffs, and they became known as the "riffraff." - this is rubbish. The expression riff-raff has been in the English language since at least 1475 (see Oxford English Dictionary under riff-raff). I haven't seen the programme, so I don't know if it contained this error, but it needs deleting from this article as an untruth. Zythophile (talk) 12:31, 30 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
