Shoutout to Marcus MT for initially starting the article Created by Bremps (talk). Self-nominated at 20:46, 2 April 2023 (UTC). Post-promotion hook changes for this nom will be logged at Template talk:Did you know nominations/Thinzar Shunlei Yi; consider watching this nomination, if it is successful, until the hook appears on the Main Page.[reply]

  • Just a comment: the first reference should use Template:Cite tweet to get rid of the referencing error. That said, I question whether you can ever use a Tweet for confirming a date of birth. Schwede66 21:50, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • Article is long enough, written neutrally, and was 5x expanded. Article has inline citations and seems free of close paraphrasing/plagiarism (Earwig checks out). This appears to be the 4th nomination for Bremps, so QPQ is not required (but will be next time). Per WP:SELFSOURCE, using her tweet for her birthday seems fine. The hooks are interesting, neutral and cited. The image is free and used in the article. gobonobo + c 16:32, 28 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi I'll take this on for review as part of the August 2023 GAN Backlog Drive Mujinga (talk)
Hi @Bremps: looks like this can be a GA with a few improvements, I'll put the article on hold for you to address the comments below. I'm fine with extending the traditional seven days as long as we are in communication about it, cheers Mujinga (talk) 00:15, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, thanks for reviewing my nom. I'll be addressing the issues within the seven day timespan. @Mujinga Bremps... 00:49, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I implemented most of the suggestions. I chose "Burmese" since that is the demonym I saw in the sources, and can change it to Myanma if you would like. Can you please clarify what the following suggestion means? @Mujinga Bremps... 15:08, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • "Frequent doxing by pro-junta accounts posed a significant security risk; she frequently switched hiding places " 2xfrequent, suggest changing one
    Bremps... 15:08, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Bremps re 2xfrequent I meant the prose has "frequent doxing .. frequently switched" so I was asking you to change one instance to "often" or whatever works. Can you mark what you have replied to and what you haven't so we can see what else is left please? Re Burmese vs Myanma perhaps it's best to check at WP:MYANMAR? Cheers, Mujinga (talk) 08:18, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Hi @Mujinga,
I implemented every suggestion you have made save for the one on Burmese/Myanma; I am asking for advice on that one at Wikipedia:Help desk.
    Thanks,

    • "In 2018, she, along with 16 other activists, " - better "Thinzar Shunlei Yi" not "she"
    • "and she was convicted in 2020" - this suggests to me a custodial sentence, but there's no news of her then being released so what was the sentence?
    • "Frequent doxing by pro-junta accounts posed a significant security risk; she frequently switched hiding places " 2xfrequent, suggest changing one
    • "took refuge in Thailand in Summer 2022" - summer?
    • " In 2016 .. In 2019 .. In 2022" make less of a list?
    • lead: why " 2021 Burmese coup d'état" if it links to 2021 Myanmar coup d'état and why called her burmese not myanma? i'm genuinely interested, it seems quite controversial after reading Names of Myanmar
    • Lead: " She lives in exile in Thailand as of 2022, and runs the #Sisters2Sisters anti-sexual violence campaign." - now we are 2023, has anything changed? maybe link Wartime sexual violence as it is below
    • lead: could add soemthing about awards
    • infobox: "Known for Anti-Tatmadaw activism, organizing Myanmar anti-junta protests, mental health activism, feminist activism" - ok but feminism only mentioned hera and no mention of the television show?
    Bremps... 03:08, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
cool thanks for the reply, yes I see the question at Wikipedia:Help_desk#Burmese_or_Myanma? Mujinga (talk) 11:38, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bremps in addition the extra photo is good and I've marked the query about pulling the structure (including the lead) into paragraphs as not done yet Mujinga (talk) 11:49, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bremps Ok everything is fine for me now except the Burmese/Myanma thing. It doesn't seem logical to me to describe the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état as the 2021 Burmese coup d'état and I just like the article to be consistent. Happy to wait for more answers or to discuss further here, this is the one issue left for me (unless there are further improvements I'd need to evaluate). Thanks, Mujinga (talk) 21:37, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(chekcing in) cool let's see if we get an answer on this Mujinga (talk) 13:42, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Hi @Mujinga,
I think "Burmese" works best. That was what I got at the Help Desk (even though only one person replied) and that is the demonym used at Myanmar.
    Thanks,
    Bremps Bremps... 19:34, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    FYI I linked 2021 Myanmar coup d'état as 2021 Burmese coup d'état for consistency. Bremps... 19:42, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Sure that works, thanks for your patience on this tricky issue. I see you have made an effort to be consistent and so I'm happy to make this a GA now. Mujinga (talk) 19:54, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for your patience and advice, @Mujinga! Bremps... 20:05, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

On this version:

  • 8: As a teenager, she was sexually assaulted by a tutor. She experienced clinical depression, and attributed the incident to karma for her actions in a past life at the time - ok
  • 11, 12: In 2018, she, along with 16 other activists, including poet Maung Saung Kha, were charged with unlawful protest for organizing solidarity protests for internally displaced persons in Kachin State and against the Rohingya genocide - ok
  • 12: Her trials lasted for two years, and she was convicted in 2020 - source says "She faced trials for 2 years and was convicted in 2020" - so that's too close, please rephrase

    Hello @Mujinga,
if I am understanding you correctly, do you mean every section should have one paragraph? That might make those paragraphs too long.

I went ahead and did so, though. Bremps... 18:10, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I meant pull into paragraphs generally, but I liek what you did and made the "2021–present: Post-coup d'etat" into two paragprahs, see what you think. I also made an edit for tense and an edit for wikilinking more clearly, again see what you think Mujinga (talk) 21:21, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Some initial thoughts on a possible FAC nomination[edit]

G'day, here are some initial thoughts. I'll work through them thematically:

Sources

Firstly, you need to closely examine WP:RS and ensure that all the sources meet the requirements of being a reliable source, although I should say that the majority of the sources are clearly reliable. I have questions about the use of YouTube videos (see WP:RSPYT), and Twitter/X (see WP:USERGENERATED). I freely admit not being familiar with what passes for a reliable news outlet in Myanmar, but you need to think about what makes Myanmar Mix (and some others like New Naratif) a reliable source (in terms of each piece of work itself (the content), the creator of the content (the writer, journalist) and the publisher of the website. I would also say that at FAC, her autobiography will be expected to have been referred to to check basic personal details and perhaps some other material (although it must be used very carefully because it is not independent of the subject). And if it had been reputably reviewed, some idea of what has been said about it by people who should know. I would also say that in general there appears to be quite a bit of detail in sources that is not used in the article, and sometimes this can lead to lack of clarity or an incorrect impression. For example, when I read "was doxed on pornographic sites" I wrongly assumed an intimate video of her was released, but when reading the article I found that her telephone number had been published. There are plenty of other important details to be mined from the existing sources. Feel free to challenge anything I have said above, or ask any questions at all. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 01:52, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Images

They all seem to be US Govt images, so no issues here. The captions are all appropriate and properly formatted. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:26, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Views on Aung San Suu Kyi

This is currently really only expressed in a quote box and not in the body per se beyond a short sentence. Especially given she was initially inspired by her, this needs some explanation about why, when and how her views changed. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:27, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Extreme Lives interview

This contains quite a bit of useful material on her views. I recommend using it as a source, it should be reliable for her opinions and statements but not facts. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:34, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Chronological approach

In general terms, with biographies it is best to take a strictly chronological approach. There are some sentences that appear out of place. For example, the information about Mizzima TVs licence is from 2021, but is followed by events of 2015. Her refusal to disclose her whereabouts in January 2022 is also out of chronological order. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 03:03, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox

There are some additional fields that could be used here. Have a look at Template:Infobox person for more. I would split education by putting her uni against | alma_mater = , and leave her Bachelor of Education (in full) against education. I would use teacher, author and television host for |occupation=, then just have the activism in the |known for= field. Also a start year for | years_active = and use |awards= as well. But go right through and add any fields that are relevant. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 03:03, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That's probably a good start. I would mention that FAs on (relatively) young people can quickly become out of date, but that shouldn't put you off. I would say that unless you maintain it, it could quickly lose FA status for that reason if successful. I've watchlisted this page, and will monitor responses. Once the above points have been addressed, I'll have a close look at the prose and structure and make some recommendations. Regards, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 03:07, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your comments. I will be editing the article over the next while to incorporate these changes. Bremps... 14:18, 26 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Peacemaker67,
In her ExtremeLives interview, she stated that she was a Buddhist, and I'm not sure where to put that. I would appreciate your opinion.
I understand your concerns Twitter and YouTube, but the Twitter account belongs to Thinzar Shunlei Yi herself and the YouTube videos are interviews with her. I think they are acceptable per WP:SELFSOURCE. The same goes for New Naratif and Myanmar Mix; she has been interviewed in the process of writing a profile about her.
I'm still working on getting a copy of her autobiography. Other than that, I've implemented all of your helpful suggestions.
Thanks,
Bremps... 17:07, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
