Article merge

I have merged the article Academic dress of the University of Hertfordshire into this one. aliceinlampyland 19:40, 31 January 2006 (UTC).

Motto

Someone has changed the "motto" section in the infobox from "Building Futures" to "Seek Knowledge Throughout Life". They are both correct.

The University's coat of arms has the motto "Seek Knowledge Throughout Life". The slogan currently used by the University is "Building Futures".

Which should we list in the infobox? The Wednesday Island 01:10, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Content!!!

Is it me or is everything now focussing more on engineering and law? Simply south 21:32, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

This is going too far. This seems like bias (at least to me). Simply south 21:06, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Merger

See Talk:University of Hertfordshire (disambiguation)#Merge. Simply south 17:52, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

Edits

Reverted previous edit as it referred to the university as a polytechnic "still going strong" even though its status changed in '92, plus who has stated that the university "still remains predominantly as an engineering establishment"? londonsista | Prod 00:15, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

University ratings

(I'm posting this to all articles on UK universities as so far discussion hasn't really taken off on Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities.)

There needs to be a broader convention about which university rankings to include in articles. Currently it seems most pages are listing primarily those that show the institution at its best (or worst in a few cases). See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Universities#University ratings. Citations

Dear Wednesday Island, the citation thing. If I say that "Paris is the capital of France" does that need citing? As for justification of listing them, they were involved with a failed attempt to "fit up" an innocent man on a false rape charge. I am going to e-mail Mr Hobday now with an idea that may resolve matters.Yours Sincerly, Oyebo. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Oyebo (talkcontribs) 17:39, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Dear Wednesday Island, the citation thing. If I say that "Paris is the capital of France" does that need citing? I've already pointed you towards WP:RS. I hope you've read it if you plan to stay around here. As to your question, see WP:CK. As for justification of listing them, they were involved with a failed attempt to "fit up" an innocent man on a false rape charge. Wikipedia cannot take sides in legal disputes, and cannot contain unsourced information, especially when it's potentially libellous. I am going to e-mail Mr Hobday now with an idea that may resolve matters. Who is Mr Hobday? The Wednesday Island (talk) 19:01, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
It is common knowledge that Hertfordshire University law firm are Berryman, Lace & Mawer. As for libel,a truthful statement cannot be wrong. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Oyebo (talkcontribs) 21:56, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
I don't know it, so it's not common knowledge. And truth is not what we're looking for on Wikpedia; verifiability is. The Wednesday Island (talk) 22:13, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
Therefore Everything you don't know needs citations? Wikipedia is not after truth. Yup, Episcopalian logic. OyeboOyebo (talk) 23:03, 27 October 2008 (UTC).
Everything which is not common knowledge needs citations. Common knowledge is what is known by everyone. Not everyone knows which law firm may or may not be hired by a given university, and therefore it is not common knowledge, and therefore it needs citations. The requirement of verifiability, not truth, is an official Wikipedia policy by which you are expected to abide if you edit here. You should also bear in mind the official policy against making personal attacks, which you have just transgressed. The Wednesday Island (talk) 23:46, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
Verification derives from the Latin for truth.Paris is the capital of France may not be common knowledge to a non-European.OyeboOyebo (talk) 17:24, 28 October 2008 (UTC).
True but it's easily referenced. Anything that is doubtful needs a quality reference or it can't go in. Theresa Knott | The otter sank 19:44, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Argument from etymology is pointless. Arguing official Wikipedia policy with me is pointless; I can't change it. If you want to complain, complain to the Wikimedia foundation. Meanwhile, stick to the policy or go away. The Wednesday Island (talk) 19:21, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Double standards Wednesday Island? If I say you are Episcopalian it is an attack when you tell me to get lost it isnt? But I must not detain you from your ground breaking research on onanism. OyeboOyebo (talk) 09:51, 29 October 2008 (UTC).

There is no double standard. I have told you you need to abide by policy or leave. That's simply the way Wikipedia works. However, you have claimed my logic is "Episcopalian logic", whatever that means; the only way I can understand your statement is an attempt to cast doubt on my logic because of the communion to which I belong, which is a personal attack under the terms of WP:PA ("using someone's affiliations as a means of dismissing or discrediting their views"). Now, indeed, you are doing something similar concerning my membership of the sexology and sexuality Wikiproject. Please learn that the policies do apply to you. The Wednesday Island (talk) 12:46, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
AS A HETEROSEXUAL NON PROTESTANT I TAKE EXCEPTION TO THAT!!!!!!!Oyebo (talk) 13:35, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
I don't understand your point (and I'm not a Protestant either). The policies apply to you whatever your religious convictions or sexuality. The Wednesday Island (talk) 13:45, 29 October 2008 (UTC)
Good, I am not a gentile either, and now I shall be civil to you.All I want is a single sentence in the Herts University entry regarding what happened. Thank youOyebo (talk) 13:52, 29 October 2008 (UTC).

Lawyers

No mention of Berryman,Lace & Mawer (U of H lawyers). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Oyebo (talkcontribs) 23:22, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Please provide a citation (see WP:RS) to show that these are the university's lawyers. Also please provide a justification as to the relevance of this information in an article on the university. (Should we list the robemakers? The people they call in to unblock their drains?) The Wednesday Island (talk) 23:28, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Actually don't bother. Why would we want to put that in the article anyways? It's irrelevant. Theresa Knott | The otter sank 19:50, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

It is releveant if it involves a court case Sinking Otter. OyeboOyebo (talk) 09:49, 29 October 2008 (UTC).

I'm sorry but it isn't. Do you have a conflict of interest here? Theresa Knott | The otter sank 11:19, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

I am after the truth. Look, I am dozing off here. I'll make it simple. ALL I WANT IS A ONE SENTENCE ADDITION TO HERTS UNIVERSITY ENTRY REGARDING WHAT HAPPENED.Oyebo (talk) 13:33, 29 October 2008 (UTC).

Then find some decent references per WP:SOURCE and then we can discuss if it's relevant to the article. Theresa Knott | The otter sank 17:09, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

A Final Hit.

Great track by Leftfield but it may serve as my swansong. How do I make a formal complaint against you? Have a nice dayOyebo (talk) 13:04, 30 October 2008 (UTC).

You can appeal to other administrators at WP:AN/I, that would be fairly informal. Alternatively you can go through our dispute resolution process at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution that process usually takes some time. Theresa Knott | token threats 19:06, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

The other administrators are your pals. The dispute resolution also. Que pasa?Oyebo (talk) 21:10, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Well then don't bother complaining then. Or complain to Jimbo directly ( also a pal of mine) or the wikimedia foundation (staffed by pals of mine). What do you want from me? Your not going to be allowed to put your personal views and experiences into our articles no matter what. So complain all you like to anyone you like. Theresa Knott | token threats 21:16, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Its not a personal view but a cover up. Anne-Marie Hackett made a PROVEN false rape allegation against a student nurse at U of H. U of H failed by their own admission to see to Ms Hackett WHO HAD A HISTORY OF FALSE ALLEGATIONS.Away and off to your pals wee girlOyebo (talk) 22:50, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Finally after all this time you give some details that would allow me to go looking for references myself! You are talking about Warren Blackwell. I've done a search on the internet and although i can find plenty about that case I can find nothing that accuses the university of a coverup. Theresa Knott | token threats 08:50, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Moss University of the Year 2009

Do we think the reference to the above award is credible? I can't find anything on a preliminary search for 'Moss University of the Year 2009' but a search on 'Agneta Burton' does show there is such someone by that name as a researcher at UH, working on biologoical monitoring of pollution, and mosses and lichen are particularly sensitive to some pollution and are I think used as an indicator of some types of pollution.Dolive21 (talk) 12:34, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Rankings

I am Ann Bruno, the media and PR manager at the University of Hertfordshire and I have noticed that the current figures are not up to date. Currently we have 27,700 students,2,900 international students from over 85 different countries. Global network of over 170,000 Alumni. 2,700 staff, turnover £231 million. --Hertsuni (talk) 14:27, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

As of 6th September 2012, League table rankings appear incorrect for most sources pre-2010; I know that UH did not achieve an overall ranking higher than 40th in any of the tables. This is evident simply by following the very links provided in the table, e.g. for the Guardian 2010, where UH was ranked 97th, not 25th.

I'm not a regular Wikipedian/editor, so I don't know the most appropriate action to take. I assumed that removing the erroneous table was sensible until it was revised, but user Sabrebd suggested ("If its wrong please explain how on the talk page rather than just deleting") that erroneous data should be left in the article until it has been corrected (isn't that bad? If we know it's mostly wrong, shouldn't it be removed immediately to avoid providing misinformation?). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.171.240.83 (talk) 22:09, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

I went back and found the edit where I think it was changed in some overlooked vandalism. Perhaps you could check and see if that is accurate now.--SabreBD (talk) 22:33, 7 September 2012 (UTC)
Looks correct now, yes, but missing this year's rankings. Strange vandalism!: — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.171.240.83 (talk) 22:51, 7 September 2012 (UTC)
I have now added the 2012 results back in. Hopefully its all there now.--SabreBD (talk) 17:21, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

/* 21st Century */

Hi there. The entry reads like a blurb for the University, nothing negative. You omit that in May 2004 a false rape allegation led to a change in the law. Why is that? Are you paid by Hertfordshire Uni? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.125.24.172 (talk) 11:20, 27 August 2014 (UTC)

Semi-protected edit request on 5 October 2014

The current rankings table shows rankings from both QS and THE, both show different figures for the same review body, ie QS says 67 and 701. Nothing explains how the 2 are different and looks very confusing, furthermore the references don't show both figures.

These should be removed from the rankings table. If it can be argued that they are of relevance, then it should not be on the table, but the section next to it on current rankings, so it can be explained how the rankings are different.

Either way the table is just confusing to look at and the QS and THE rankings need to be removed from it.

109.153.42.194 (talk) 21:53, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

Not done: there are two different numbers for each of those review bodies because one is a national ranking, the other is a worldwide ranking. There isn't much to say here about how the two are different - they are just two recognized review bodies and they have different methods of ranking schools. The names of the organizations are hyperlinked so interested readers can learn how the two bodies are different, that, however, is not so pertinent to this particular school that it needs to be in this article. Cannolis (talk) 23:05, 5 October 2014 (UTC)

Suggest large rewrite

The article seems to be to need a large rewrite. The opening paragraphs are a barrage of accolades that do not make for a particularly interesting read and does appear quite advertisement like, and the History is a bullet pointed list of events that could be reformatted into prose. Does anyone concur? 90.209.172.98 (talk) 12:49, 9 April 2012 (UTC) It is incredibly biased, many Wiki entries are mere PR offerings and make the entire site look amateur. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.46.160.196 (talk) 10:22, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
