Adding political context[edit]

I'm planning to add information about the political context of these programs, especially the dynamics between Federal, State, and local governments. I've got some ideas in my sandbox, let me know what you think! I'm also hoping to add in the perspective of welfare recipients, or at least more discussion of the outcomes of the programs described. — Carl (Seaplant (talk) 06:08, 4 March 2018 (UTC))[reply]

Re: →‎Overall Reductions in Poverty Rate: tagging, possible OR in here in the way it's written[edit]

@Shalor (Wiki Ed): thanks for reviewing this! Could you elaborate on what part seems to be original research? I did my best to summarize some points made in [1] and [2] (mainly Figure 8) without changing thier meaning or implication. — Carl (Seaplant (talk) 19:07, 2 June 2018 (UTC))[reply]

  • Hi Seaplant - It's more in how it's written - the work uses a lot of "If... then..." writing styles, which comes across as your own interpretation of the source material as opposed to something like "According to the Public Policy Institute of California..." Here's some examples:
While the long-term effect of these programs on California as a whole is multi-faceted and complex, the immediate effect on those receiving aid is somewhat easier to quantify.
This is a bit subjective - the viewpoint on this being easier or complex could change depending on the person. Since the section looks at the short term, it would potentially be better to make it more of a concrete statement, like "The immediate effect of welfare on those receiving aid has been researched by (insert name)."
In other words, one third of the people who would be in poverty if welfare programs didn’t exist are raised “out” of poverty by welfare programs.
This is the one that really stood out as an "if... then..." statement. Attributing the material would help with this.
Other than that, some of this is also due to undersourcing - it looks like your main source is the PPIC link, however it would also be good to back this up with more sourcing that backs up the claims and to add more in-line citations behind some of the bigger claims.
