This article is new enough and long enough. The hook is sourced to an offline book and is accepted in good faith. The article is neutral and I detected no close paraphrasing issues. The article and hook use the word "backwaters" which from my UK perspective means the quiet shallows at the edge of a river away from the main current. How about ALT1 instead? - @Cwmhiraeth: Thank you for bringing this to attention. The problem is that I have my doubts that Lake Umatilla is mentioned by the source, and would therefore not be directly attributable. Come to think of it, I never thought of that area as a lake, just part of the Columbia River. - I don't think OGN mentions Lake Umatilla, so I believe the suggested hook is a bit of synthesis. If I have time today I'll try to think of something else. Off the top of my head, I think a more interesting hook would have to do with moving the cemetery (see the talk page), but I don't know how readily available the sources are to be able to add that to the article. - I don't know anything about the geography of the region, but your hook states that Blalock was inundated as a result of the construction of the John Day Dam and our article on the dam states that Lake Umatilla is formed by the impoundment of the dam, so I don't see much synthesis there. How about
