London Vegetarian Society

[edit]

@Psychologist Guy should presidents of the London Vegetarian Society be included as presidents? e.g. Arnold Hills Throughthemind (talk) 19:19, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it's probably worth including them. Charlotte Despard was President of the LVS (1918-1922), Bertrand P. Allinson was President (1922–1962). In 1962 Dr James Horsley took over. In 1969 both Society's joined together. They didn't have as many presidents as the main Vegetarian Society. Psychologist Guy (talk) 20:03, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, maybe we should split them out somehow to not make the dates confusing. Throughthemind (talk) 20:07, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It would be worth creating a section for the Presidents and vice-Presidents of the LVS but in regard to the latter I need to do a lot of research to find them as there were many vice-Presidents. I will leave it for now but come back to this at a later date when I have the references. Psychologist Guy (talk) 20:15, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nice, sounds good. Throughthemind (talk) 20:23, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Frank Merrick was a vice-president of the Vegetarian Society. Another musician Percy Scholes is also listed as a vice-president [1], [2], [3]. However, Scholes authored two books for the London Vegetarian Society, Some Aesthetic and Everyday Reflection on the Vegetarian System of Diet (London: London Vegetarian Society, [1931]) and Why I am a Vegetarian (London: London Vegetarian Society, [1948]) [4] so it is likely he was a vice-president of the LVS. James Haughton

[edit]

@Psychologist GuyThanks for updating James Haughton's page. It seems there's a contradiction of years. Fifty Years of Food Reform lists the years he served as 1871–1873[1]. Any idea what year is correct? Throughthemind (talk) 19:54, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relevant quote from FYoFR: "On his decease on Christmas day in the year 1870, at the advanced age of eightyfour, the executive of the Vegetarian Society found itself in the position of having to elect a successor, and their choice fell upon Mr. James Haughton, J.P., of Dublin, who unfortunately occupied the post for the space of only two years." Throughthemind (talk) 20:01, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nice find. This confirms to me the 1870 election date is correct because it is also listed in adverts at the time [5] printed in 1870. In this obituary it says he was still president in 1873 [6]. I believe the correct dates were 1870-1873, this was also what James Gregory reported. Psychologist Guy (talk) 20:08, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I've updated the navigation template to be 1870. Throughthemind (talk) 20:15, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

William E. A. Axon

[edit]

@Psychologist Guy There's another contradiction with dates William E. A. Axon's article now says he was elected president in 1909, but John E. B. Mayor's page says he served as president until 1910. Do you have information on which is correct? Throughthemind (talk) 20:48, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the 1909 date is wrong, the Wikipedia article needs to be corrected. From what I have read Axon was President 1911-1914, this is mentioned in footnotes in these sources [7], [8] Psychologist Guy (talk) 20:56, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I've update his article and the template. Throughthemind (talk) 21:35, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Missing presidents

[edit]

@Psychologist Guy I've added years served to William Harvey and W. A. Sibly. Both need articles. I can't find any information for more recent presidents, including when Paul McCartney served as one. Do you have the details of those to add? I'd assume they would be eligible for articles too. Throughthemind (talk) 23:48, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am in communication with a few people about this, I will get back to you with the correct information hopefully. Peter Fox was the first CEO for the Vegetarian Society in 1985 (he only held the position for 6 weeks and fell out with the Society). However, there was still President's during this era that need to be found and added. Maxwell Lee (1931-2005) was president around 2000 and 2002.
