Hollywood waistbands use one piece of fabric to incorporate the waistband into the pants. They don't have a piece of fabric sewn at the top like most pants. The fabric is tucked at the top. Belt loops may be an inch or two centimeters lower.[1] The pants seamless look features a high waistband that sits at or above the natural waist. Its high-rise provides a slimming and glamorous appearance and the illusion of an hourglass figure and longer legs.[2][3]

Originating in the late 1920s and sold by Ben Sherman, McMorran & Washburne, Sears and other men's clothing stores.[4][5][6][7] It was made popular amongst silver screen actors in the 40s and 50s, including Katherine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich, due to its sophisticated high fashion appearance. The style saw a resurgence in the 80s and has remained a fashion trend favorite amongst designers.[3][8][9]
The Hollywood waistband is popular amongst several major fashion designers including Armani, Chanel, Gucci, Ralph Lauren, Valentino.[10]

Bob Knight's wardrobe consisted of beltless trousers with Hollywood waistbands.[11]
