QU 1[edit]

You are looking over a protection request at WP:RFPP, the request states: “Lots of anon-vandalism all making the same controversial edit, probably all socks of each other or a banned user, pleas protect.” You review the page history to find 138.989.789, 138.989.196, and User:CiltyDog all making the same edit/reverting to the same version (note that the edit they are making is not vandalism, but instead a clear content dispute). If you add up all three of their edits they have far surpassed and violated WP:3RR. You also note that the reporting party, and the one who the 3 accounts/IP’s are reverting is on the verge of violating 3RR himself. You also notice that there is an IP: 68.934.123 that is making non-controversial clean up edits to the article. How would you proceed?

A:I would block all three edit warriors and give the other user, the one trying to cleanup, a final warning. I wouldn't protect the article
  1. Tiptoety: Question one: Good answer, protection is BAD! But why would you warn the IP?
  2. Addshore: I would warn the IP it is still partr of the war im presumming.
  3. Tiptoety: no
  4. Tiptoety: "cleanup"
  5. Tiptoety: meaning like fixing ref's
  6. Tiptoety: and periods and stuff
  7. Addshore: ohh :P
  8. Tiptoety: not related to the edit war at all
  9. Addshore: i wouldnt warn it then xD
  10. Tiptoety: k, good
  11. Addshore: i thought you meant trying to cleanup the edit war :P
  12. Tiptoety: oh, no :P
  13. Addshore: xD

QU 2[edit]

I noticed that one of the reasons that you failed you RfA was because of the fact that you have very little mainspace editing… so here is a question to attempt to get your interest: What are some favorite hobbies of yours? Do you read any series (Harry Potter) and if so, which ones? Do you play any sports? Now, go and find a few articles that relate to some of the things you like to do and post them here.

A:Here is a list of the articles that would interest me or are kind of related to me:
  1. Kitesurfing
  2. Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
  3. Stand_up_paddle_surfing
  4. Badminton
  5. Kite_buggy

Fallow up: I encourage you to now go and edit all of those articles! And not just fix typos, but get involved in talk page discussions and maybe even create a new section.

Stand_up_paddle_surfing[edit]

I had started doing some fixes on this page (as you can see here), adding some external links, references, wiki links e.t.c when I found this page The content from the majority of the article had been copied from this page. The page now stands with a Copyvio tag on it (added by dendodge as he beat me). The article has now been reported here on this diff. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont

Now deleted. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 11:24, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Article has now been basicly recreated with no copyvios. I'm helping to get it on its feet, referencing linking and adding a bit of centent. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 13:01, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

QU 3[edit]

You come across an article with:

James Christopher football for a school in the North American collegiate, and has won multiple titles </ref>

References:

1. Some un-heard of newspaper talking about how this guy won a trophy for football.

Would you delete this article right away, if so, for what? Would you do some more research about the person? Would you nominate it for an AfD?

Dispute resolution[edit]

1. Part A: head to requests for comment and answer 7 article content requests for comment in 7 days. Choose whatever topics fall within your interests and knowledge. Watch the pages after commenting to see how the discussions develop, and follow up if you think it's appropriate. Comment on the experience here. Do you see this as an effective form of dispute resolution? Do you think your input helped resolve any problems? Do you think the participants acted in good faith or were some of them trying to game the process? List the articles where you commented.

2. Part B: head to third opinion and respond to 3 requests in 7 days. Follow the other steps as described in part A, including comments here. Compare the two experiences.

Conflict of interest[edit]

Head to the conflict of interest noticeboard and look into 20 requests. If you average 3 a day this should take 7 days. You don't need to be an administrator to do this. In my experience, about 90% of these are obvious take 5-10 minutes to resolve. The other 10% are interesting (no telling how interesting). Contact me if you have any questions about how to respond to the threads. Comment on the experience here. I'll be frank: I think conflict of interest is a serious problem that deserves more volunteer attention. You don't have to agree with me, but I'd like to see your thoughts one way or the other after you've tried this firsthand. List the threads where you've investigated.

Sockpuppets[edit]

More fun with noticeboards: take a turn at suspected sockpuppets and look into 10 requests. I'm asking for fewer with this because they generally take a little longer. Other than that, treat this as a duplicate of lesson 2: I'd like a list of the threads you've looked into and your comments about the experience.

My comments for Markashworth[edit]

This case baffled me into how the user reported the other 2. The edits loked totally different and were made at totally different times and im almost 100% sure this isnt a SP case. To be totally sure maybe checkuser could be used on the user but I dont think this would be needed. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 13:45, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

User:Markashworth[edit]

My comments for Footballfan190[edit]

With this case I suggested checkuser. I spent a while looking at their contributions. The latter user made contributions on 2 days. The latter day linked in with the user as it was his RFA and the before edits on the 23rd of july did not look similar. The only link with those edits was that they followed on from eachother (one started editing as the other finished) ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 13:45, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

My comments for Whsc1[edit]

This case was so obvious I didn't think I should need to say anything. All the users are now all blocked. This shows how effective the notice board is. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 13:45, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Vandalism![edit]

Revert 100 instances of vandalism. As you probably already know, the easiest ways to do this are watchlisting and/or recent changes patrol, then looking up the other contributions of the accounts and IP addresses that have vandalized. Which instances did you follow up with warnings? Which with noticeboard threads, and why? Provide 10 examples of your work below and state what you'd do in each of them if you were an administrator, and why.

With vandalism I will generally revert any instances I see meaning that I have defiantly now reverted over 100 instances, for example this revert. If then the user has already had 4 warnings or a last warn then I will follow up the revert with a block request on WP:AIV for example this request. His contributions were 100% vandalism and he was latter blocked by Persian Poet Gal.Any obvious vandalism I see will receive a warning from me. If it is pure vandalism it will receive something along the lines of {{subst:uw-vandalism1}} going up the scale to {{subst:uw-vandalism4}}. I do know about "4im" warning templates but I rarely use these as they are too rushed. If I do this that this is a new user that doesn't really get wikipedia and the edit is a "test edit" for example adding "Hi" to a page or "can I really edit this???" I would normally use the {{subst:uw-test1}} warns going up to 4 again. In some of these cases I will also add a welcome template 1 OR 2 to the users talk page to help get them on their way to learning more about how to use Wikipedia. Also I use {{subst:uw-delete}} template for mass removals or page plankings e.t.c

Lesson 1[edit]

Please state why you want to be an administrator. Also, please answer the standard admin questions as best as you can. The answers will probably change as you experience more areas.

1. What sysop chores do you anticipate helping with? Please check out Category:Wikipedia backlog and Category:Administrative backlog, and read the page about administrators and the administrators' reading list.

2. Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any with which you are particularly pleased, and why?

3. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?

4. What is the difference between a ban and a block?

5. When should a cool-down block be used?

Answers 1[edit]

  • I want to be an administrator to help make Wikipedia better (i hope). To try help out with things more such as WP:AIVand WP:OP that i havn't been able to really contribute to much without being an administrator. I have primarily reverted vandalism, warned users and requested blocks before but i want to try to help out in more places and places that will have more of an effect on Wikipedia. I have been a Wikipedian for in my opinion quite a long time and would like to move up a level and gain more experience whilst doing so.
1. I plan to help out with clearing backlogs at Category:Administrative backlog as i know there is normally always a backlog somewhere. I also like WP:AIV and WP:UFAA and would definatly want to help out there also. I have also being doing ork on Open Proxys and finding the many that have not been blocked from Wikipedia yet so i would like to help in finding and blocking these and also on WP:OP and with requests on WP:ACC and WP:RFPP.
2. I am pleased with my contributions to TBGS as i vastly expanded this article and corrected facts on there making the page better and more informative. I also added images to the page to make it appeal more. I also started the stub Alvis Striker SP ATGW Vehicle. I have also uploaded the imagesTBGS crest, New Xfire style, Palm105.5 Logo, Volcano Pink Field, Chicken In Snow,Fuerteventura sunset, Logmein Logo, Surfing in Fuerteventura, Logmein Website and the Image:TBGS_crest_GoodQl.gif for the TBGS page. I still hope to find some more pages to contribute to.
3. I haven't been in an editing conflict before, i try to avoid them if possible. There have defiantly been users that have caused me stress though. I normally deal with these people as best i can within reason, reverting them a few times requesting blocks if it is vandalism. There have been occasions where users have directly targeted abuse at me when i was reverting vandalism but i generally ignore it as i know it is one step closer to them getting blocked. If they keep on going and nothing is happening after i have tried everything i can i will tell other people and if everything fails i will normally walk away from my computer for a while and "cool down".
4. Bans are restrictions put upon a person in which they are not welcome to edit Wikipedia. This can be set on part or the whole of Wikipedia. A block is a technical mechanisms that usually enforces bans(it actually stops them from editing).
5. According to wikipedia policy a cool down block should never be used. If you were to get blocked by a cool down block then you wouldn't cool down, you would just get more angry and annoyed because you have been blocked. see WP:CDB

Pretty good responese. #5 is spot on correct. #4 we'll work on a bit to flesh out over time, but its hitting the right points. MBisanz talk 07:24, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

  • I want to be an administrator to help make Wikipedia better (i hope). To try help out with things which I always find have backlogs more such as WP:AIVand WP:OP that i havn't been able to really contribute more to than I have already without being an administrator. I had started off my wikipedia life as primarily reverting vandalism, warning users and requested blocks but i slowly moved away and did less vandalism reversion to help out in more places and places that will have more of an effect on Wikipedia in the long term in my opinion. I have been a Wikipedian for in my opinion quite a long time and would like to move up a level and gain more experience whilst doing so.
1. I plan to help out with clearing backlogs at Category:Administrative backlog as i know there is normally always a backlog somewhere. I also still like working on WP:AIV as it is a fast paced notice board and WP:UFAA for the same reasons. I have also being doing work with Open Proxys and finding the many that have not been blocked from editing Wikipedia yet so i would like to help in finding and blocking these and also working on WP:OP to block the Ip's that other users have listed. I also hope to help out greatly on the creating accounts side of things as I have an account on the account creator tool and regularly create accounts for those that request them but I also stoped from creating the account sometimes due to the fact that I am a non admin. Another place that I would look to help out on is WP:RFPP.
2. I have not had very many major solid article contributions but I am pleased with my anti vandalism work in the passed. I am also very pleased with my new bot work (see User:Addbot which does various tasks from the simple newsletter delivery to the more complicated side of tagging pdf files that are in the Image namespace. I am pleased with the Images which I have uploaded some of which are now on article pages such as the Logmein Logo and the TBGS crest. My most major article creation to date was a list that I created as my first contribution to the project. See List of countries where French is an official language. As you can tell all of those years ago I was still a very new and inexperienced wikipedia editor. I have also a few articles which I have majorly edited (in my opinion) such as TBGS and LogMeIn. I have also helped out in various small areas of wikipedia such as the Cluebot rewrite where I helped to collect diffs of good and bad edits. Also with the anti vandalism tool huggle that I have been helping out with testing and bug fixing and thinking of new ideas and helping out users that are new to using it. One last big thing I have done was the remake of Wikipedia:Bots/Status whcih took at least a month. On wikipedia I am more proud of been the technical guy that I am and even without major article creations I still think I an useful to the project.

Lesson 2[edit]

List all the tools admins have (note I have a short list hidden in my userspace). Describe a circumstance where an admin should not use them, despite a valid issue existing.

Blocking

  • Blocking should not be used for cooling down angry users. See WP:CDB
  • Blocks should not be used on a person that has requested to be blocked e.g. to enforce a wikibreak. See WP:SELFBLOCK
  • A user in a content dispute should not be blocked but the issue should be reported.
  • Blocks should not be used for recording warnings or other negative events in a user's block log.

Unblocking

  • Users that were blocked in good faith by other admins should not be unblocked without attempting to talk to the blocking admin first.
  • Unblocking will almost never be acceptable when it would constitute wheel warring (a struggle between two or more administrators in which they undo one another's administrative actions). See WP:WW

Deleting

  • Don't delete pages unless you know how to undelete them as well! See WP:DGFA
  • Don't delete pages which are inuse or still being created. See Wikipedia:INSPECTOR

Undeleting

  • Don't restore pages if the content has been deleted on legal grounds such as a copyright violation.

Viewing deleted material

  • If the content has been deleted on legal grounds such as copyright violation don't allow the deleted material to be viewed.
  • If there is no good reason to allow the content to be seen don't allow it to be viewed.

Page protection

  • Protection should not be used as a measure against vandalism that has not yet happened.

Page unprotection

  • Admins should not edit or unprotect pages that were protected as an Office action without permission from Wikimedia Foundation staff.

Page creation protection , Salting a page from creation

  • A page should not be protected from creation as a pre-emptive measure, but only in response to actual events.

Editing a protected page

  • Admins should not edit or unprotect pages that were protected as an Office action without permission from Wikimedia Foundation staff.

Editing a user's code page

  • Administrators may modify these pages to remove a user script which has been used in an inappropriate way and that is about it.

Rollback

  • If there is any doubt about whether an edit should be rolled back then you should not use the feature.

Granting rollback

  • Administrators should not grant rollback to editors with a history of abusing the revert process.

Moving over a redirect

Bulk rollback via &bot=1

  • This should not be used for reverting a change that you just don't like.

MediaWiki namespace

  • A page in the MediaWiki namespace should not be unprotected.

Similar account name creation

I will add the descriptions at a letter date. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont

Good find! You don't need to describe each tool, just generally when an admin shouldn't use admin tools. MBisanz talk 08:49, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
Thats what i meant ;p. I was a bit sleepy when i decided it was time to add the list here ^^. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont

Lesson 3[edit]

Look over the deletion debates page. Summarize which ones you've participated in as a nominator and an !voter. Do you consider yourself a deletionist or inclusionist?

I would consider myself an inclusionist for anything with notability sources e.t.c as there are still some things that are proposed for deletion that shouldn't be, but also a deletionist for anything that cannot be proved true or there is no notability e.t.c.

Nominator
I generally just nominate things under CSD.

Voter

Lesson 4[edit]

How are Good Articles different than Feature Articles? Where does Peer Review fit into the article life-span process?

A Good Article only has one reviewer whereas a Featured Article has many reviewers. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont

Lesson 5[edit]

What is cascading protection? Can it be set by an Admin?

Cascading protection is used on pages such as the main page. It only works with pages that have been fully protected. It is disabled for semi-protected pages as it represents a security flaw. It fully protects the given page and it also fully protects any pages that is transcluded on to the original page whether directly or indirectly. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont

Lesson 6[edit]

Are the Administrator's Noticeboard and Administrator's Noticeboard/Incidents on your watchlist? They should be. Despite the name, non-admins are welcome to contribute to discussions they understand.

These were not in my watch list but they now are. I have been looking to contribute more on pages like these. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont
Yes these two pages are in my watch list and whenever I see a topic that is active on there that I think I may be able to contribute to I will. ·Ãḍď§ђɸŗЄ· Talk

Lesson 7[edit]

One thing I've taken an interest in is Template:Editabuselinks. Do you use any of the noticeboards regularly? Most of them do not require admin tool to work on. Some like Reliable Sources and Fringe Theories can require lengthy investigations. Others like 3RR are more fastpaced. Its all about finding the right fit for you.

I do use some of the noticeboards. These include Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism mainly but i also wants to start contributing occasionally on Wikipedia:Usernames_for_administrator_attention where i can. I have also used Wikipedia:Requests_for_page_protection and have helped out a tiny bit on Wikipedia:Help_desk and Wikipedia:New_contributors'_help_page i think. I hope to contribute more on these help pages in the future. I also use WP:OP.·Add§hore· Talk/Cont
I do now use many of these notice boards. The main ones that I use include Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism, Wikipedia:Requests_for_page_protection, Wikipedia:Help_desk and Wikipedia:New_contributors'_help_page. I have also vastly helped out on Wikipedia:WikiProject on open proxies and try to comment on things on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents and Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard whenever possible or it is right to. I have also recently just started looking into some of the requests on Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets as I have found new tools to compare the users. ·Ãḍď§ђɸŗЄ· Talk

Lesson 8[edit]

Who can warn an administrator? Who can block an admin? What editing policies may admins violate?

  1. Anyone can warn an administrator.
  2. Anyone in the sysop group can block an admin.
  3. Technically anyone may violate any editing policy if they think that in violating it it will make Wikipedia a better places according to Wikipedia:IAR, therefor any administrator is also "allowed" to "violate" any policy is it falls into the criteria of the Wikipedia:IAR policy. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont
Well technically, no one should violate editing policies. IAR is only if there is no way to do something to improve the encyclopedia without violating a policy. Basically the good of improving must far outweigh the bad of violating the policy. Really our of 21,000 edits, I've never found a reason good enough to violate a policy. MBisanz talk 03:16, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
3 Revision. No one, not even sysops "should" violate the editing policies. ·Ãḍď§ђɸŗЄ· Talk

Lesson 9[edit]

Do you use IRC or the Mailing Lists? Do you have EmailUser enabled? Do you realize that sending an email through the EmailUser interface discloses your email? Were you aware of this incident? It did happen in real life as described. (Basic privacy questions)

I do use IRC massively as I think it is a brilliant way of quickly getting messages to people but not the mailing lists but I may do in the future. I do have EmailUser enabled and I do realize that sending E-mail through the EmailUser interface gives away my E-mail address which is why I tend not to use it but try to talk to people via other means such as talk pages, IRC or even IM's like MSN if it is very urgent and there is no other way. I was not aware of this incident but i an now aware of it. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont
Good, I've only been an admin for 2 months now, and I specifically avoid the high drama areas of WIkipedia, and I already have death threats out on me. But since their from a guy in Italy, and I'm in New York, I'm not that concerned. MBisanz talk 13:41, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Lesson 10[edit]

Your already a rollbacker which is good. Please go and apply, download, or script enable: Twinkle, NewPageWatcher, AutoWikiBrowser, Huggle and VandalProof. If you don't use Firefox, I recommend downloading it just for Wiki-work. Editing with Twinkle through Firefox saves dozens of clicks per operation.

I am currently already using Twinkle, AutoWikiBrowser, Huggle and VandalProof but not NewPageWatcher. I will download / apply for this now. I now also run a bot which carries out multiple tasks for me. I have also massively improved my javascripts in my monobook.js to help me with my every day tasks. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont

Lesson 11[edit]

Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Newpages&hidepatrolled=1&hidebots=1&limit=500&offset=0 and in the sequence 400-500 find 3 articles that appear to be a conflict of interest. A big clue is a user name that is nearly the same as the article title. List the articles here and the timestamp of article #500 (so I can check).

The standard format (from WP:COIN) is:

Lesson 12[edit]

What is an open proxy? They are banned by the Foundation. What commonsense technical reason are they banned for?

An open proxy is a proxy server which any user on the internet can access and use. There are normal proxy s within network groups that are used for schools, library s that store and forward web pages, DNS results e.t.c By using other anonymous open proxy s users can hide their real ip address therefor if they get blocked from Wikipedia when using it through the proxy they would still be able to edit on their normal ip - proxy. Therefor open proxy s are often seen as a problem. It is possible for a computer to be running an open proxy server without knowledge of the computer's owner. Due to the fact that they can be used to mask a users true ip address and change them by using another proxy very quickly evading bans and blocks. This would mean that they would not be able to be blocked from Wikipedia properly and would just keep coming back and for example vandalizing. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont

Lesson 13[edit]

Please go to Special:Newpages and welcome ~75 users who have red-linked usernames using Friendly. This exercise has two purposes. One, a lot of admining is doing repetitive tasks that no one ever notices. Two, when you welcome a user, their likely to come to you if they need help or have a problem. Its a great way to help out and build experience. MBisanz talk 06:05, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

I have probably welcomed over 100 new users already using Friendly. I also made my own templates for this which also includes more obvious links to my user talk page telling them that if they need help to come and ask me. I have made one for registered users, you can see this at User:Addshore/welcome, and one for anon users which can be found on User:Addshore/welcome-anon. I subst it onto their page plus a sig. I think this works better than the standard templates as it includes exactly what i think they need. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont

Lesson 14[edit]

Go visit the Help desk. Try and find an unanswered issue that you know the answer to, jump in and solve a problem.

I have been adding some help to that page where i can and i also am on #wikipedia-en-help@freenode so i can help with users that add the {{helpme}} tag to their talkpage. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont

Lesson 15[edit]

Review Wikipedia:Autoblock. This is one of the most common mistakes an admin makes. In our haste to block an obvious vandal, we may kill off a corporate gateway or a dynamic IP. If you need to block quickly, remember to leave enough of an explanation that another Admin can figure out if its a real Autoblock issue or just a user trying to evade a block.

Lesson 16[edit]

Read Wikipedia:Administrators open to recall. You will get this question at an RfA. You will need to give a yes or no answer. You will be judged on your answer, regardless of which way you go. Its unfair that you will get an Oppose regardless of your answer, but its part of the process.

I have read and think that i understand and im sure i know what my answer would be. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont

Lesson 17[edit]

Review our policy on Office Actions. Pay close attention to who can perform Office Actions. If you feel the need to undo any admin action by someone on that list, its almost always better to ask at AN than to do it yourself. Take a look at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents/My desysop of Zscout370. There was no wheel war here by the conventional definition. It was more of an action by Jimbo in his role as founder. Just like I wouldn't do an unblock of a user Raul654 did without checking AN, there is something to the idea that we don't always know the whole story and others who do things like checkuser, OTRS, oversight, etc, probably do. At the same time, remember WP:IAR and that admins aren't always perfect.

I have learnt the lesson that it is better to ask that to do first. I am also admin on some game servers and they kind of have the same policy. No admin unbans bans that other admins have set. In a way they kind of work in the same way as wikipedia, warn, warn, kick, temp ban, ban, unban request e.t.c. I never knew about Wikipedia:IAR before now though. I'll be sure to remember it now though. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont
Good answer, but you'll fast find IAR is rarely used. Its more of an "in case something really bad happens" kind of thing. MBisanz talk 03:17, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
