From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fannie Simon (New York City, April 15, 1891 - October 20, 1980) was an assistant editor, librarian, and world traveler.

Born in New York City on April 15, 1891, she was the daughter of Julius and Bertha Gubner Simon. Her father emigrated from Germany in 1885 and made a prosperous living for his family as a clothier. Thus Fannie Simon grew up in Westchester and Upper West Side, with live-in servants and horseback riding in Central Park with her brother, Alexander[1].

In 1930 Simon moved to the Murray Hill section of Manhattan where she would live for the next fifty years. She attended Smith College, graduating in 1914, and began working two years later, first in advertising then in the magazine industry, primarily as an on-staff librarian.

In 1932 Simon joined the Special Libraries Association, an organization she remained active until her death. She was an avid supporter of the Metropolitan Opera Guild and the New York Philharmonic Society, and very active in the New York City Republican Club, the [[Smith College Alumnae Association]], the Church of the Incarnation, and her neighborhood association, the Murray Hill Committee.

When she retired from McCall's Magazine in 1959, as a librarian and associate editor, Simon volunteered much of her time to even more causes including, at the time of her death, working as the coordinator of a program of conversational English for the English-Speaking Union.

Perhaps Simon's greatest passion was world travel which began when she was a child traveling to Europe with her family. Shortly before she died, Simon remarked to a friend that she estimated that she had traveled to over 150 countries, often traveling alone as she did at the age of 89 when she took what turned out to be her last trip to Iceland in September 1980.

She published a few travel articles but her full-length manuscript, Following Fannie in a Changing World, about the around-the-world trip she made with her college classmate, Margaret Hodges, remains unpublished[2].

Simon died in a traffic accident in New York City on October 20, 1980; she was eighty-nine years old.

Feedback from Alison[edit]

Hi Elena! So excited to see your work here.

You've done an excellent job with the introductory sentence, which nicely sums up the subject of the article (world traveler! We should all be so lucky!) Typically, the information within the parenthesis is only the birth and death dates (not the city of birth), and is not linked, though I appreciate that you did link. And unfortunately, including year links is not typical style on Wikipedia, and I would encourage you not to include them on future editing (though again, I think it's kind of a fun idea.)

Speaking of linking! You did a wonderful job including links to other Wikipedia pages throughout, and that's wonderful to see. I especially appreciate seeing that you linked to the New York City Republican Club and the Murray Hill Committee, even though there aren't current pages dedicated to these topics. Doing this (and creating red links) is a signal to other Wikipedia editors that these topics should be subjects of their own pages, and it really helps to further improve Wikipedia by giving editors action items. Really nice work!

A big task of this assignment was to add headings throughout the article — the large text helps to organize information (and automatically creates a table of contents, which is really neat.) Take some time to look through established articles to get a sense of what is typically included. Please let me know if you need some support in creating these.

You have cited information through, but generally would want to see more! Not quite every sentence, but perhaps every paragraph (at least when all the facts within the paragraph are from the same resource!) And don't forget to include a "References" heading to top your sources. You can go ahead and use the link provided as the only source throughout (the second source you used here is confusing and doesn't provide more information.) Please let me know if you need support with re-using sources!

Lastly, you included a great image here, and left in the automated caption, which is fine. But please take care to include alternative text when placing images within articles. Again, please let me know if you need support with this function.

I've bolded your scored in the grading rubric below. Feel free to delete this feedback/grading rubric if/when you choose!
