Brief Timetable[edit]

Chapter 1[edit]

Emperor Ling of Han (AD 168-189); Yellow Turban Rebellion(黃巾賊)(184);

Oath of the Peach Garden; child story of Cao Cao; Lu Zhi was superseded by Dong Zhuo

Chapter 2[edit]

Battle between three brothers, and Zhang Ba; Victory of Zhu Jun; Office Job of Liu Bei; Zhang Fei's abuse on an inspector; Executions of Liu Tao and Chen Dan by eunuchs;

In 176, Empress He (Ling) of Emperor Ling (regin 168-189) gave birth to Emperor Ling's oldest surviving son Liu Bian (the future Prince of Hongnong). (Emperor Ling had previous sons but all died in infancy or childhood.)

In 181, Consort Wang, a concubine of the emperor, gave birth to a son named Liu Xie (future Emperor Xian).


Jealous Empress He assassinated Consort Wang by poisoning.

Emperor Ling was enraged and wanted to depose her, but she was not deposed.

Prince Lie Xie was raised personally by Empress Dowager Dong, the Emperor Ling's mother.

Empress Dowager Dong loved Liu Xian and the ill Emperor was about to make Liu Xian to his heir instead of Liu Bian.


One uunuchs, Jian Shuo, said that He Jin was would be obstacle.

He Jin was the brother of the Empress He (Ling), the mother of Liu Biao.

He Jin and Yuan Shao placed Liu Bian on the throne, and plotted to kill Jian Shuo and other eunuchs; and the plot was failed due to objection of Empress He.

Quarrel between Empress He (Ling) and Empress Dowager Dong; and the death of Empress Dowager Dong by He Jin's poisoning.

He Jin and Yuan Shao's second plan to kill eunuchs failed, and their another plan was to bring outside armies. One of them was Dong Zhuo


Chapter 3[edit]

Cao Cao's objection; Zheng Tai and Lu Zhi's objection against Dong Zhuo's coming.

Eunuch's plot to kill He Jin; Cao Cao and Yuan Shao objected; Hu Jin's death; Yuan Shao and Cao Cao stormed the Palace;

Four of the Ten Attendants ran off with the Empress, Emperor Bian, and Prince Xian.

Rescue of Emperor; The emperor met Dong Zhuo;

Dong Zhuo speach of his plan to dethrone the emperor. Ding Yuan objected; Lu Zhi objected;

Dong Zhuo was feared of Lu Bu, the adopted son of Ding Yuan;

Dong Zhuo fled and Ding Yuan's army came on; Li Su's plan to lure Lu Bu;

Lu Bu's betrayal and Ding Yuan's death; Dong Zhuo became Lu's adopted father.

Chapter 4[edit]

Yuan left the palace and abandoned his office; And Dong gave him a governorsip to appease him.

Dong dethroned the emperor; Ding Guan's objection and death; New emperor came; Done became the Prime Minister;

Dong killed the just dethroned emperor; his mother (Empress He), and his consort (Lady Tang) by poisoning.

Wu Fu's plan to kill Dong failed;

Yang Shao letter to Wang Yun of a plan against Dong;

Wang's birthday party and Wang's grief; Cao Cao proposed a plan against Dong.

Cao's assassination plan failed and he fled; Letters and pictures of the fugitive Cao were sent everywhere.

Cao was captured and imprioned. Cao escaped together with a guard Chen Gong.

They visited Lu Boshe, Cao killed Lu;

Chapter 5[edit]

Chen Gong left Cao; Cao met his father; Cao prepared money and soldiers and summoned his friends and relatives;

Yue Jing, Li Dian, Xiahou Dun, his cousin Xiahou Yuan, Cao's two cousins, Cao Ren and Cao Hong

Cao issued a manifesto to make punitive campaigns againt Dong Zhuo.

Gongsun Zan met Liu Bei; They wanted to join the Allied;

Cao presides the meeting of the Allied;

Sun Jian expedition to River Si Pass; Dong sent Hua Xiong; Sun's victory;

Sun's request for supplies; Yuan Shu rejected; Hua's counterattack to Sun; Sun defeated and escaped near death by exchanging helmets.


Gongsun Zan arrived and was welcomed by the Allied; Liu Bei's introduction

Hua challenged the Allied; The Allied sent Yu She; sent Pan Feng;

Guan Yu volunteered but was ridiculed by Yuan Shu, but Guan killed Hua.

Dong Zhuo's main army came along; Lu Bu defeated Fang Yue, Mu Shun, Wu Anguo.

The Allied sent Gongsun Zan; Fight between Liu Bei's three brothers and Lu. Lu fled to the Pass;

Chapter 6[edit]

The quarrel between Sun Jian and Yuan Shu about supplies;

Li Jue proposed a marriage between Sun's son and a daughter of Dong Zhuo.

Li proposed removing the capital; Dong agreed; Yang Biao, Huang Wan, Xun Shuang objected;

Luoyang was burned. Sun Jian arrived abandoned capital.

Cao Cao wanted to pursue Dong; Yuan Shao did not want to renew battle;

Cao's battle against Lu Bu and Cao's near death;

Sun's finding of the Imperial Hereditary Seal of the Emperor; Sun wanted to go home;

Sun's lie about the Seal; Yuan's interrogation; Yuan sent message to Liu Biao to interrupt Sun.

The Allied dispersed; Battle between Sun and Liu Biao;


Chapter 7[edit]

Yuan Shao asked Gongsun Zan to attack Han Fu. Yuan informed Han of Gongsun's attack. Han asked Yuan's help; Yuan arrived Han's camp;

Battle between Gongsun and Yuan; Gongsun escaped near death by the help of Zhao Zilong; Liu Bei helped Gongsun; Lie Bei met Zhao.

Skirmish between Sun Jian and Liu Biao instigated by Yuan Shu.

Sun's death; Peace talk between Liu and Sun Ce, son of Sun Jian.

Chapter 8[edit]

Dong Zhuo made his own city Meiwo. Wang Yun's plot against Dong using Diao Chan began.

Relations between Dong and Lu Bu worsened;

Chapter 9[edit]

Li Ru advised Dong to give Diao to Lu Bu. Wang Yun instigated Lu to kill Dong and Lu agreed, and Li Su became Lu's accomplice;

Dong Zhuo's death; The massacre of Dong's family;

Li Jue, Guo Si, Fan Chou, and Zhang Ji, and Dong's soldiers fled; Execution of Cai Yong.

Li Jue and Guo Si asked amnesty; Their asks was rejected by Wang Yun.

Battle between Lu (along with Li Su) and them began;

While Li Jue forces was confronting Lu Bu's force, another Dong's remaining forces approached and sieged the capital.

They requested the emperor the head of Wang Yun. Death of Wang Yun;


Chapter 10[edit]

Four Dong's generals were appointed higher ranks by the Emperor; They buried Dong Zhuo in Meiwo.

Ma Teng and Han Sui of far west conspired a plot against them. Ma and Han won a following battle. However Ma had to retreat due the short of supplies.

A new Yellow Turban Rebel. Li Jue sent Cao Cao to act in quelling the rebellions. Many rebellions joined Cao's army, and Cao's power blossomed.

Cao met Xun Yu, Xun You, Guo Jia.

Cao wished to be united with his father, Cao Song, and sent a messanger.

Tao Qian wanted to escort Cao Song. Tao's escorting soldiers killed Cao Song and ran off.

Cao's Expedition on Tao began. Chen Gong intervened of no result. (193) An Battle entailed.


Chapter 11[edit]

Tao was to surrender; Mi Zhu objected; Mi's plan was Kong Rong's help and Tian Kai's aid.

Mi met Kong; Kong was busy handling the Yellow Turban and besieged by them. Taishi Ci wanted to become a messanger to call help of Liu Bei. Lie forces and Taishi brake the rebel's siege and entered the castle.

Mi Zhu met Liu. Liu and Zhao Zilong wanted to help Tao. Tian Kai agreed to help.

Liu met Tao; Lie wrote a his letter to Cao asking the release of the siege; Now Lu Bu invaded Cao's homeland; Cao retreated;

Tao requested Liu Bei to become the ruler of his region; Liu retreated to Xiaopei. (194)

Battle between Lu and Cao began. Cao Cao's desperate escape;


Chapter 12[edit]

Chen Gong's plot of a pretended secret letter to Cao Cao. Cao's desparate escape from Lu.

Another Battle; False news of Cao's death; Lu retreated. Battle between them ended due to famine.

Tao Qian was near death and asked Liu Bei to take the office of his region; Liu consented and entered to Xuzhou.

Cao Cao wanted to renew expedition againt Liu Bei. Xun Yu remonstrated.

Cao Cao's expedition on Yellow Turban. Xu Chu(許褚) was captured and joined Cao.

A Battle between Cao and Lu Bu began. Lu lost his castle Puyang. Another battle resulted in Lu's loss of his castle, Dingtao (AD 195)

Where is Cao Cao? Cao Cao replied "There: On that dun! That is he"

Chapter 13[edit]

The defeated Lu was seeking new host. Yuan Shao troops approached to destroy Lu Bu. Hearing this Lu went to Liu.


Liu received Lu against all the objections of his followers. A skirmish between Lu and Zhang Fei. Liu gave Lu a castle Xiaopei.


The court was in the control of Li Jue and Guo Si; A plan to estrange Li and Guo; They fought each other.

Li Xian, a nephew of Li Jue, dispatched the Emperor to Li Jue's camp out of the Palace. Hearing this Guo attack Li camp. Guo was defeated.

Zhang Ji intervened; The querrel ended; Peace between two was made. Both lost the Emperor. Emperor's plan to move to Hongnong near Luoyang. Emperor's journey began.

Guo's plan to kidnap Emperor at a bridge failed; Guo renewed his pursuit; Yang Feng wanted to escort the Emperor. Battle between Yang and Guo began; Guo failed;

Guo sieged the Emperor's camp; Dong Cheng brake Guo's siege. They reached their destination Hongnong.

Guo and Li Jue came together to capture the Emperor; Emperor left Hongnong; Rebels ravaged Hongnong;

Yang Feng and Dong sent rescue request to a Yellow Turban faction. That facton joined the Emperor.

Another wave of Guo and Li stormed Hongnong; Emperor left Hongnong; Emperor crossed Yellow River on a small boat. Escort soldiers deteriorated. Dong and Yang and the Emperor wanted to move to Luoyang;

Chapter 14[edit]

They reached Luoyang; (AD 196) Ruins of the Capital; Yang Biao of Emperor summoned Cao Cao.

Cao's rescue of the Emperor. Battle between Cao and two rebels. Cao's victory; Yang also fled in fear of Cao;

Dong Zhao's plan to move the Capital to Xuchang. Emperor's journey to Xuchang; The fled Yang interrupted;

Battle between Cao and Yang; Xu Huang of Yang's army joined to Cao's camp; Yang fled to Yuan Shu.

Emperor and Cao reached Xuchang and Cao became the Prime Minster.

Cao's plot to make Lu Bu and Liu Bei fight each other(Rival Tigers and One Prey). Liu was reluctant to fight Lu. Cao's plot failed;

Cao's another plot (Tiger against Wolf); Liu left castle to fight Yuan Shu. A skirmish between Yuan and Liu.

Drunken Zhang Fei; Lu captured Xuzhou. Zhang fled to Liu's.

Chapter 15[edit]

Yuan Shu requested Lu to attack Liu. Liu escaped Lu's attack; Yuan broke his word of promise;

Lu sent letters to Liu asking to return. Liu returned; Lu and Liu exchanged their castles.

Yuan Shu's banquet for Sun Ce; Sun left Yuan yielding the Imperial Hereditary Seal. Sun met Zhou Yu.

Sun's punitive campaign againt Liu Yao. Zhang Ying of Liu Yao was defeated;

Sun's visited a temple in the hills; Taishi Ci interrupted Sun and battle began; Hand to hand fight; Sun fled;

Another battle between Sun and Liu; Liu fled to Liu Biao.

Sun's intentional wound and Sun's false death news; Sun captured Moling;

Taishi became a prisoner of war. Sun settled in Xuancheng; Sun's next expedition to YuJun and others;

Sun Ce restored complete tranquillity on the South Land.

Yuan Shu's plan to remove Liu Bei.

Chapter 16[edit]

Yuan approached Liu camp Xiaopei while giving Lu Bu some gifts; Liu asked Lu's aid;

Lu's banquet for Liu and a Yuan's general. Lu's peace negotiation using an arrow. Yuan's wrath.

Yuan's next scheme; Yuan's marriage alliance proposal to Lu. Lu replied he had not prepared trousseau;

Zhang Fei's theft of Lu's horses; Scuffle between Lu and Zhang;

Chen Gong incited Lu to remove Liu. Liu abandon Xiaopei to take refuge with Cao Cao. Liu met Cao;

Liu got protectorship of Yuzhou from Emperor; Cao rejected schemes against Liu.

Liu reached Xiopei along with Cao's army to attack Lu. Zhang Xiu was about to attack the Capital;

Cao's peace negotiation between Lu and Liu. Cao's expedition to Zhang; Zhang's surrender;

Cao took a wife of Zhang. Zhang's plot to avenge; Drunken Dian Wei lost his halbert. Zhang's mutiny;

Cao escaped and his first son Cao Amin and Dian Wei died

Yuan requested a fiancee, Lu's daughter; Lu killed Yuan's messenger.

Lu sent a messenger Chen Deng to Cao Cao. Chen promised to be Cao's scion. Lu was to kill Chen.

Chapter 17[edit]

Yuan Shu wanted to become an Emperor. Yuan's anger at the death of his messenger to Lu;

His military campaign against Lu.

Lu of Xuzhou asked the aid of Liu of Yuzhou; Confrontation between Yuan's army and Lu's.

Betrayal of Yang Feng and Han Xian of Yuan's army; Lu's victory; Lu met Yuan's emperor charriot. Yuan's retreat;

Yuan asked aid of Sun Ce in vain; The death of Yang and Han by Liu Bei.

Cao began south expedition summoning Sun Ce, Liu Bei, and Lu Bu.

Cao met Liu and Lu. Capital movement of Yuan, leaving solders on Shouchun.

The allied was short of food; Cao wanted the loan of Wang Hou's head. Full scale attack of Cao. Shouchun fell.

Rebel of Zhang Xiu; Cao retreated leaving Liu Bei at Xiaopei, leaving Lu Bu at Xuzhou.

News of the death of Li Jue and Guo Si. Cao's Expedition against Zhang Xiu. Cao cut off his hair as self punishment.

Zhang was defeated and besieged at Nanyang. Cao began to fill up moat and to make a mound of earth.

Chapter 18[edit]

A scheme of Cao. Another scheme of Jia Xu of Zhang Xiu. Cao was defeated; Joint operation of Zhang and Liu Biao.

Liu was to cut Cao's road of retreat. Cao's ambush at a pass, and victory;

Yuan Shao was to attack Xuchang; Zhang and Liu's first chase after Cao failed;

Their second chase succeeded. Cao returned to the Capital; Cao ordered Sun Ce to repress Liu Biao.

Yuan Shao asked Cao for food supplies for his campaigns against Gongsun Zan. Yuan's rude letter made Cao to attack him. Cao's campaigns against Lu Bu for the security of his southern part.

Lu captured a Cao's messenger to Liu Bei. Lu expedition to Liu. Liu asked Cao's aid. Zhang Liao confronted Guan Yu.

Receiving Liu's help request, Cao began campaigns against Lu. The confrontation between Cao and Lu.

Xiahou Dun lost his eye by an arrow of Cao Xing, a general of Lu Bu. Gao Shun of Lu defeated Cao's army.

Now Gao, Lu, and Zhang Liao is about to attack Liu Bei, an ally of Cao.

Chapter 19[edit]

Liu was chased so close by Lu, both entered Xiaopei in a queue. Liu left Xiaopei immediately leaving his family.

Liu chose to go Xuchang. Liu received human flesh meal. Liu met Cao. Cao approached Xiaopei.

Lu, in Xuzhou, start an expedition to save Xiaopei. Chen Gui was left in Xuzhou to guard it.

Chen Deng's schem; Chen made Lu and Chen Gong fight each other. Lu lost Xuzhou and Xiaopei simultaneously.

Cao pursued Lu. Lu entered in Xiapi. Three brothers met again and met Cao.

Cao attack on Xiapi. Lu hesitated battle due to his wife's complains.

Lu's messengers reached Yuan Shu to get Yuan's help. Yuan requested his fiancee for the condition of his aid.

While returning, one of Lu's messengers were captured by Liu. Another one reached Lu. Cao strengthened his siege.

Lu wrapped his daughter on his back, and Lu tried to break Cao siege in order to send his daughter to Yuan. Lu returned Xiapi due to Liu fierce attack.

One official of Lu asked Lu's permission to have a wine, but only got fifty strokes.

Surrender of Lu's officials; Lu was captured alive; Cao Cao executed Lu Bu and Chen Gong;

Chapter 20[edit]

Zhang Liao avoided execution. Zang Ba surrendered; Liu and Cao went to the Capital;

Liu was presented to Emperor and styled the "Imperial Uncle".

Hunting expedition of Liu, Cao, and Emperor; Grief made Dong Cheng intrigue against Cao.

Emperor's secret letter hidden in a girdle; (AD 199)

Plot of Dong, Wang Zifu, Wu Zilan, Chong Ji and Wu Shi; Ma Teng joined also; Ma recommended Liu Bei.

Chapter 21[edit]

Dong visited Liu and Liu added his name. Liu made gardening his hobby.

Cao requested Liu to come; Dialogue Cao and Liu; Cao's evaluation of heroes;

News that Yuan Shao defeated Gongsun Zan; that Yuan Shu would yield title of Emperor and the Seal to Yuan Shao, and that Yuan Shu went to join his brother Yuan Shao.

Liu left Cao's camp to cut off Yuan Shu. Cao army pursuied Liu afterwards, but refrained;

Liu reached Xuzhou, Yuan Shu's cavalcade was near Xuzhou; Liu's army confronted Yuan.

Yuan Shu died (199). Liu consolidated his position in Xuzhou. An army of Cao approached Xuzhou to destroy Liu.

A scheme of Chen Deng; Two brothers of Liu defeated Cao's army and killed its officer Che Zhou.

Chapter 22[edit]

In the terror of Cao, Liu sent a messenger to Yuan Shao, with the help of Zheng Xuan.

Liu's request, Yuan set forth a plan to attack Cao. Chen Lin wrote the manifesto of Yuan's campaign.

Scuffles between Cao's officials; Xun Yu insisted that Cao should fight. Cao himself went to meet Yuan Shao and ordered one of his army to go to meet Liu.

Yuan and Cao met; Yuan did not make up his mind; Tired Cao marched back to Capital, and ordered his army to attack Liu.

Guan Yu captured a Cao's solder in order to interogate. Now Liu came to know that Cao is not in Cao's camp.

Zhang Fei's scheme; Zhang Fei captured another captive. Liu told two captives to tell Cao that the death of Che Zhou was accidental; Two captives were released;

Guan Yu was to guard Xiapi whither Liu sent his two wives; Some were to defend Xuzhou, and Liu Bei with Zhang Fei were to defend Xiaopei.

Chapter 23[edit]

Cao tried to arrange peace with Zhang Xiu and Liu Biao, before launching an expeditin against Liu Bei.

Cao's peace negotiation with Zhang Xiu resulted in succcess, and Zhang submitted to Cao.

Cao prepared peace negotiation with Liu Biao. Kong Rong recommend Mi Heng for Cao's messenger.

The story of Mi Heng; His journey to Liu Biao and Mi's death; There was no sign of Liu Biao coming to join Cao Cao.

Dong Cheng fell ill and Ji Ping joined Dong's plot; A Dong's servant told the conspiracy to Cao Cao.

Cao feigned his illness; Jin Ping's poisoning attempt againt Cao Cao failed;

Cao's torture on Jin and Jin's interogation on Dong's accomplices. Jin's death; (AD 200)

Chapter 24[edit]

Cao executed conspirators including Consort Dong, a sister of Dong Cheng.

Cao hesitated to attack Liu because of Yuan Shao's presence, but determined to attack Liu of Xiaopei anyway.

Liu sent Sun Qian to Yuan Shao to ask help. Yuan did not help by the illness of his child.

Liu and Zhang Fei's night raid on Cao failed. Zhang escaped to hills and Liu sought his refuge at Yuan Shao.

Liu was welcomed by Yuan. Cao captured Xiaopei and Xuzhou. Cao besieged Xiapi of Guan Yu and Liu's family.

Zhang Liao's peace negotiation with Guan Yu.

Chapter 25[edit]

Guan Yu lost Xiapi and ran on a low hill of Tushan Mountains. he was surrounded on all sides.

Zhang Liao met Guan. Three faults if Guan died. Guan's three conditions of his surrender.

Guan went to the Capital along with Cao. Cao gave him Red Hare.

Yuan Shao began campaigns against Cao Cao.

Yang Liang defeated Song Xian, Wei Xu, and Xu Huang, but was defeated by Guan Yu.

Yuan's fury about his general's loss by the hand of Liu's brother.

Chapter 26[edit]

Liu avoid Yuan's punishment. Wen Chou and Liu Bei crossed Yellow River and was to fight againt Cao .

Cao Cao scheme of putting supplies cart in front. Wen's defeat.

Battle between Wen and Zhang Liao. Battle between Wen and Xu Hwang. Wen was killed by Guan Yu.

Liu confirmed Guan Lue existence. Liu avoided Yuan's execution again.

Temporary ceasefire; Cao and Guan went to the Capital;

Yellow Scarves rebels led by Liu Pi and Gong Du; Guan Yu wanted to destroy them. Guan met Sun Qian, a spy of the rebels at that time. Guan's victory.

Guan received Liu's letter. Guan left Cao leaving a letter.
